Do it, because I remember it being one of my least favorite discs. Mainly the brightness. I haven't watched a second time though.

I was just about to but realised my camera is seriously skewing the colour, one of the settings is off but I only realised just after I took a bunch of photos

I'll do them again and then come to the defence of Kong('s UHD)!

I just rewatched it in 4k and I don't understand the hate here. It looks fantastic. I really enjoyed it and I think I'll enjoy watching it again from time to time.

The stampede scene being the exception: the blending of some of those effects don't hold up very well, but most everything else is pretty good.

I've even watched the long making-of documentary and it's pretty fascinating actually.

Can anyone find a 4k slipcover for sale somewhere?

I didn't dislike it as much as most on here and I would never thing of choosing to watch the Blu-ray over the UHD whenever I want to watch the film.

I watched the original movie (1933) last night and was only thinking if the 2005 had the same well done pace and editing.

I did watch some of this last night and compared it to the BD. The compression and noise is pretty bad on the BD...worse than I recall. Yes, you're dealing with DNR on the UHD BD (although in some scenes its very light, but then seems to fluctuate to something heavier), but I think it's the lesser of the two evils in this case. With that said, the BD seems to contain finer details at least in some scenes. While the UHD BD is bright, the BD almost looks too flat and dull. However, the color looks much better on the UHD BD and looks almost drained on the BD. So all of this is picking your own poison, but I prefer the UHD BD.

I got this the other day and it froze about 4 times during the movie and 2x during extra features. Anyone else get that also? Otherwise it looks and sounds great.

Finally watched the extended cut of this for the first time and I loved it! What a big epic full course cinematic meal! This was the film that made me obsessed with films and how they are made and the hours upon hours of documentaries and commentaries for this film are absolutely invaluable insight into how movies of this scale are made. One of the crown jewels of my media collection for sure

was bored and tested the 4K and blu side by side.. the kong vs 3 v rexes fight for example is probably the best example how nuked the lighting is...

Bluray looks like bit cloudy day with some sunlights here and there and in the final showdown the cgi elements on the cliffs have way better shadows and make the cgi realistic.. even the grain and noise mask it better.

On the 4K every cloud is just pure white and without tampering with the tv setting just hurt my eyes and the rocks with roots etc is way too bright and looks flat especially the roots, branches on top. It has lost alot of the shadows and depth that make it look better on the old master.
Sharpness is increased but when i switched to old blu the softness was actually welcomed sight

Just sucks how inconsistent it is.. the scene where v rex is pulling kong down the cliff.. that backround with the far away waterfalls etc looks amaizing with clear detail and bright blue sky :O
makes me wish we saw more of that place

i think next watch will be the old bluray, its just more pleasant to the eyes and i dont have to start changing the settings... also the lighting just looks more natural and accurate how they intended it to look.
not meaning the tinting on either (antique yellow on 4k or greenish on blu) but it does seem more cloudy and dimmer day in that scene instead of tropical brightness.

soundwise dts x it great and bit of an upgrade atleast but the old audio sounded very similar in the scene i tested. bass sounded also as deep. tough my sub only goes down to 28hz so idk lower than that.

Now that I have a 77 inch Sony A80L OLED TV I definitely noticed a lot more the extreme sharpness, occasional DNR, and new mud brown color timing that others mentioned earlier in the thread. I still don’t mind the way it looks but it definitely was much more noticeable. I try to keep my settings as close to the recommended baseline levels as possible and never turn on extra processing. I found for this movie in particular though by turning the “Sharpness” down from 55 to 40 and the “Color” from “Expert 2” to “Neutral” it helped a lot. The jungles are now closer to green instead of brown and the skies and water are more blue. I didn’t even have to turn down the “Brightness” or “Contrast” which to my eyes made everything really stand out and look stunning with the adjusted color and sharpness. Maybe what I’m saying is sacrilege but just wanted to add my 2 cents.

You shouldn't have sharpness above 50 on a Sony anyway

Thanks for the tip, I’ll keep it where it is then at 40 and just turn the color back to Expert when I’m not watching King Kong

40 can have weird side effects too, it's best left at 50 where it neither adds nor subtracts sharpness.
