Did anyone else purchase Watership Down Day 1? I'm anxious to see it but may not get to until Saturday. I've also got to plow through 6 more episodes of Orphan Black Season 2.

I honestly can't watch that movie. It's a hell of a movie, but I can't watch it.

I wouldn't say that, it's very much a Nicolas Roeg film. In fact the opening and closing sequences might just be the most Roeg-like Roeg has ever been!

Safe is probably the better film to me, but they're both excellent.

I've never seen Safe, but I already think of Don't Look Now as one of the flagship Criterion Collection titles.

Don't Look Now is a fantastic horror movie that I've loved for many years, and it looks better than ever on the Criterion Blu-ray.

Question because I don't know Don't Look Now, is it a true horror film? It looks like a horror movie, and I can't watch horror. Can you tell me in what sense it is a horror film? make sense??

Ever seen Rosemary's Baby? These two would be a PB&J-like double feature.

Though to me, Don't Look Now is not a horror film in the genre sense it is indeed a horror film in terms of theme as well as having a mood and editing style that makes you feel something is wrong at every second. "Nothing is as it seems". This is the type of film that makes you tense when a character just looks out of the window. There are many films that owe a lot to Don't Look Now and I recommend you just watch it yourself even having said you dislike horror. It's a masterful film. I have yet to get the new blu-ray myself, hoping they have the rumored sale this week!

kuro_sawa answered it as well as I could have. I also compared Don't Look Now to Rosemary's Baby in my User Review a few days ago, and I agree that the horror is drawn from the atmosphere.

The opening sequence of Don't Look Now takes place in a setting that is majestically beautiful, while also conveying a sense that nothing is safe. The entire movie maintains this momentum, and that vibe that there are no safe places drives the movie to its amazing conclusion.

I am extremely excited that they are releasing the Hoop Dreams blu-ray, that has been on my wishlist for years!

yeah... Rosemary's Baby is too much for me. So maybe that's a no for me. I may try it as a rental or stream if it's on Hulu first.

Thanks for the help you two!!

I'd say that Don't Look Now is darker than Rosemary's Baby. DLN is based on a Daphne du Maurier novel (she also wrote Rebecca, the source material for the Hitchcock film.) all 3 of those films, to me, are 'horror' in the classical sense - perfect execution of a lot of the old horror tropes. Rebecca relies more on mood and suspense; I'd say that it is "safe" for anyone. Rosemary's Baby is chock full of dark comedy. I'd say DLN is much more morose and more dependent on horror elements to tell its story. That isn't a bad thing. All 3 of these movies are fantastic.

I love Safe and am incredibly happy to have it not only on blu but in a Criterion edition. I never saw that coming!

But if it's a blind buy, I'd say that Don't Look Now is a safer () bet. Because of its pace and its open-ended quality, I don't always push Safe, even to some of my more dedicated film friends. You might read a little about it and catch some clips to see how you feel, but I have a feeling Don't Look Now is a guaranteed pleasure while Safe is only going to appeal to a (perhaps big) segment.

Thanks... I can watch suspense movies like Se7en, and others of the like that are considered horror/scary by some.

Depends if the criterion site goes down in the next hour or so. If so, a sale is imminent.

SAFE is a good film but slow and minimalist as I recall. In my experience, slow and minimalist can be great if the themes connect with you but utter torture if they don't.

DON'T LOOK NOW is a totally different kind of movie (though both have a feeling of unease running throughout). It's quite unique but it does have a more genre feel. It would be in my Top 20 of all time, whereas SAFE wouldn't make the top hundred: But that's just my taste.

What I think is fairly indisputable is that DLN is by far the more influential film, very possibly Roeg's masterpiece and a veritable masterclass in editing. So even if you didn't enjoy it, I don't think you'd regret having seen it, at least as a notable piece of cinematic history.
