That is arguable, any award show or list is subject to personal opinion.

By your accounts the AFI lists are a joke as Annie Hall was #4 on the top 100 Comedies of all time and #35 on best films of all time. Comedy is more subjective than any other genre.

Not a huge Woody fan, and I wouldn't put it that high in either category but it is a great film.

Although I do somewhat agree with you. Take last year for example, King's Speech was a good movie but had no business winning over The Social Network. Even more egregious was Hooper beating out Fincher, that will go down as one of Oscar's epic fails.

Tell me the last romantic comedy that won best picture. The Academy Awards do mean something, even if they are a little off sometimes. No one is challenging me to recent movies that are better than annie hall, though. So, alas, I wait.

You should probably provide some reasons why you like it. "Probably one of the best movies of all time" doesn't really mean anything by itself.

Annie Hall is allright, but definitely NOT one of my favorite Woody Allen films. and i do LOVE Woody. too much whining and complaining from Allen mixed with generic Jewish jokes that feel like so many of the one liners are from his standup act rather than a screenplay, and finally characters who are soo needy and overly quirky it makes them annoying after a while rather than endearing.

It did not win best picture but I personally think that Letters to Juliet was a way better romantic comedy than Annie Hall. Annie Hall was fine but there was nothing special to it, and part of it I think is that it has not aged well (which happens to almost all movies in this genre). I have seen Annie Hall once and have no interest in seeing it again, but for Letters to Juliet I can watch it multiple times.

Shakespeare in Love is considered a drama. I like the movie, but yeah I don't understand how it beat Saving Private Ryan. Another reason why the Oscars are a joke.

There's something very disturbing about you thinking that Letters to Juliet is better than Annie Hall. Pretty much every reviewer comments on how special Annie Hall is, and how well it has aged. Enjoy your repeated viewing of Letters to Juliet, though.

Reviews don't mean anything to me. I can come up with my own opinion about how a movie is. For example, I just saw Man on a Ledge. It got crappy reviews everywhere, but I went to see it and I really enjoyed it (probably the best movie of 2012 so far). However, if you do care about reviews, then Letters to Juliet got a 4/5 on this website. Oh and stop with the insults, or I can say that I find it "very disturbing" you think that everyone should share the same opinion about a movie.

Wow, this has been quite the spirited back and forth; I wonder what F4CL's opinion might be on this engaging topic.

offcourse everybodys personal opinion is their own and nobody can say otherwise. i think we are just talking general consensus. one thing you do have to admit is letters to juliet is quite generic in the "formula" of romantic comedies and doesnt really offer anything we havnt seen before.

i dont care much for rotten tomatoes ratings so ill stay away from addressing that. i will say thou while i am in agreement with zeze's statement. i too watched annie hall and had no desire to see it again. i must admit for its time it did do something revolutionary in terms of breaking the fourth wall with the audience interactive comments and so must tip my hat to Allen for that. Personally Vicci Christina Barcelona is my fav Woody Allen romantic comedy. (althou you could argue that film is as much of a drama as comedy)

What I like about Rotten Tomatoes is that it tries to be objective and reach a consensus on film. I can see it being a problem when you have totally different appreciations for movies than what a expert typically would. So their trash, might be your gem. But, there is a lot of truth to their opinions. And I can see Zeze's preference being more in line with what is entertaining and what makes you feel good, rather than what is intelligent, deeply clever, and thought-provoking. These are things that I appreciate in film. In that sense, it's hard to compare Letters to Juliet and Annie Hall because they are trying to do two completely different things. And it bothers me, because it's like saying Mozart isn't so good and is boring, while at the same time praising Justin Bieber or some other crappy monotonous top 20 artist. It bothers me that some people don't have an appreciation for the finer things in life, for example, Annie Hall as a ground-breaking film that is culturally, aesthetically, and historically important work of art.

I think I've heard it all now. Woody Allen comparable to Mozart?!?

Have you seen SCOOP?!

I don't think there is any discussion to be had here with someone who quotes Awards shows and film critics. Are you trying to sell me a copy of ANNIE HALL?

Like others I will read reviews, but make up my own mind as to what makes a great film. There is no 'objectivity' in film preferences. You might as well try and find the Ultimate Pizza, and try to use your own opinions and not those of so-called 'film experts'

P.S. Please stop bashing everyone's opinions who differ from yours. Your responses have grown to be as monotonous as, well, ANNIE HALL.

Ok now you are saying that I don't like "intelligent, deeply clever, and thought-provoking" movies which is entirely not true. I like movies that make you think, but I personally did not like Annie Hall. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I was not born during that time period (and for me it does not seem relevant now). However do not say I hate thought provoking movies just because I do not highly admire this one particular movie.

Edit: And think about this: If I ask you to tell me one movie that came out in 1977, the first answer that will come to most people's minds is Star Wars, not Annie Hall. So Annie Hall is not as memorable as you think.

Edit 2: Oh and I played piano for many years and I hold Mozart in high regard. So stop with your weak arguments.

There are ways to make the "I'm not interested in this argument so I'm going to make fun of the people in it" comment funny and/or insightful, but you don't seem to know about any of those ways.
