Indeed, the Phantom Menace does get a lot more slack then it deserves, the only things that really bother me about the film are jar jar binks (man is he annoying) and the quite severe wooden acting here and there, but darth maul more than makes up for both of those things so you know if only he had more screen time and didn't get such a measly death at the end of the film, I personally would have loved it if he lasted longer then just the one film. But anyway that my 2 cents on the film. At least it isn't as bad as the Star Wars Holiday Special, oh boy don't get me started on that!

The only reason The Phantom Menace is the best of the prequels is because it was shot on film, but the thing's still abysmal.

If I had a choice, I'd rather buy the prequel trilogy. It may be crap, but at least its unaltered crap (aside from Yoda CGI'ed in Ep. 1, but I approve that change.)

The Pod Race has additions. Anakin telling Padme he killed the tuskens was also expanded. You might just want to skip the whole thing.

Mick Foley, in his autobiography, said something about Star Wars fans convincing themselves that Phantom Menace was a good movie. If you're into pro wrestling or whatever, check it out. I thought it was funny.

That sounds awesome because I get most of my movie reviews from professional wrestlers. I actually haven't seen a movie since Macho Man passed away and I've felt lost.

So what does George Lucas think of pro wrestling?

I hear it's inspired much of his dramatic storytelling.

He liked the subtle nuances of Ric Flair's acting ability, it influenced his decision to pick Hayden Christensen.

That said, midi-chorlians are entirely appropriate to The Phantom Menace. One of the key themes is symbiosis and how all things are reliant upon one another. From the Gungas to the Naboo and so on all the way up top to the politics of the galaxy.
Great post!

Yup, there are several additions to Phantom Menace. The extra bit showing off Coruscant I don't mind, but the changes to the pod race are useless. Actually, there is a touching little scene of Shmi telling Anakin to "be safe", but Lucas preceded it with a shot of an Opie doing a massive fart. Nice one, George.

The changes to Clones are fine, not least the one when Padme gets thrown from the gunship and the trooper asks her if she's okay. Her original reply, a robotic 'YES', is absolutely hilarious and it's been changed for the better. Adding in some of those deleted scenes with Padme's family would be a massive step in the right direction, but Lucas will probably stick with the Mario Bros. droid foundry sequence which was shoehorned in at the last minute.

I am definitely buying the whole Ultimate box set or whatever with both trilogies.

Funny, that people now seem to like/love at least two out of the three prequels.
That's not so bad, is it?

It's like ROTJ of the OT for many. Not for me though, as I love it just as much as the others, and it will always hold a very dear place in my heart!

Well, maybe...but then wrestling fans kind of set mankind back about 1000 years intellectually so we'll just call it even.

The only difference I believe is that AoTC was so bad it killed the entire series. Where as Star Wars and TESB were so great that even a 3 star ROTJ could not bring down the entire thing. It was just more of a let down than anything else. The bright spots of ROTS were not great enough to resuce the whole thing as it suffered from some of the same mistakes that Clones did. I was hopeful that it could but it just didn't quite do it. It's too bad too because TPM started off not so bad overall save a few key points that have been discussed.

I agree! I enjoy TPM actually It has it's weak points (they have been discussed ad nauseum), but I really loved seeing what Jedi were capable of before their destruction, the interactions between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were great, and the Darth Maul fight is the best lightsaber sequence in all six movies (Duel of the Fates is also my second favorite SW music track behind the Imperial March ).

AotC can be shortened to less than 40 minutes and still convey the necessary information. I actually prefer the Clone Wars series to AotC (I really enjoy the series )
