The VTF-1 really pounds my room hard, but would probably like some lower extension.
10x10.5?

Go with the XS15. Or, just keep the hsu.. I'm not sure you would find the output difference(s) to be that noticeable as you may already be getting plenty of output. Much would depend on your master volume level(s) with demanding source material(action oriented DVDs). The most noticeable difference would be extension. Even in max extension mode now you might be getting decent energy down to what...maybe 20hz(ish)? The XS15 would likely drop into the single digits....say 5-7hz. When the sound tracks contained a lot of strong bass <20hz you'll definitely notice a much stronger "tactile" sensation. This isn't often in the big scheme of things though(almost all DVD/film bass is >20hz). So whether or not the increased extension was a good enough reason to upgrade is tough to gauge.

I'd say the louder you like to push action oriented DVDs the more likely you'll find the XS15 makes an audible upgrade.

Yes Tom, I have some pretty decent output from this sub in my small room. I had posted some graphs a while back in the HSU thread starting at post #862. I only have the the volume knob on the unit to about 8 O'clock and audyssey has the level set to +1. I currently have the sub in the front right corner directly behind my front right speaker. I have it set to max extension and according to my last SPL test it starts to roll off considerably at about 24 or 25Hz or so. It still shakes my room pretty good though.

Oh, and I might add that I was playing around with crossover the other day. Audyssey typically would set my L/R fronts to 55, center to 40, and surrounds to 70, however I would normally set them all to 80Hz across the board as a standard. However, I recently decided to change them all to 100Hz since my fronts are rated to 50Hz. I've noticed a nice change, and I've observed more detail in both high and lower frequencies. They both have opened up nicely. I was worried that I would loose something but it actually has given a nice balanced sound.

Tom I would LOVE to own one of your subwoofers maybe in time when the money is available but I'm always reading fantastic experiences from power sound owners! I check out your site often

Hey mike correct if I'm wrong here but shouldn't the VTF 1 go lower than 24-25 hz? I swear I though that sub was capable of 20 hz and at least 18 hz if setup correctly or am I thinking of a different model

Well, I was trying to go by memory and I wasn't sure, but I recalled it started to drop off after about 25Hz. I did a quick test last night with my SPL meter and test tones, and it does indeed start to drop around 24 to 25Hz, but I still have a fairly decent SPL reading at about 22Hz, but then it starts to roll off fairly quickly from 20Hz and below.

Below is a link to a graph I posted a while back in the HSU thread. It should still be pretty accurate to what I'm experiencing today. I've moved it slightly since then, but it should give a good idea of what my sub is producing.

Might be a different model. I believe the vtf-1 was advertised as having a 32hz mode(output) and a 25hz mode(extension).

In a smaller room it wouldn't surprise me to see good output down to 20-22hz at times.

You are correct on those specs Tom. The 10" is rated down to 25Hz in max extension mode, and the 12" sub is rated down to 18Hz. I was getting some fairly decent readings down to about 22Hz last night, but drops considerably after that. That is why I was thinking about getting a larger unit. Not sure what I'm going to do yet.

I wouldn't be in a huge rush to upgrade. In this room environment the vtf-1 is obviously providing good output down to at least 25hz. You will notice two primary benefits from an upgrade...more output and more extension.

The deeper extension will be noticeable even at moderate volume levels. But the output benefits will be tied to your listening levels. At low to moderate volume levels there may not be much audible difference. But if you like to use moderately loud to loud levels at times adding a more potent subwoofer would make sense at some point.

Thank you Tom, and I agree. I do listen at moderate volume levels. What I tend to do is turn up the volume to where I can just make out the dialog and leave it there. My room is so small that it doesn't take much to fill it with sound. I also notice that the bass is more present and detailed at low to moderate levels as well, so I agree 100%.

Ok. My digital camera is broken so its just going to be from my phone but I'll post some pictures once I get my son back to sleep lol

I have had two previous subs. The first was a HTIB sub. I put hz970w in my signature, but I'm not sure that's actually accurate. I bought a HTIB shortly after buying my first flat screen television.

After that I started upgrading piece by piece and I picked up a PSW505 sub. It wasn't bad, but it doesn't have anywhere near the power (or music savvy) that the PSA sub has.

Pictures as promised...

In the box...

[Show spoiler]

I didn't get a good picture when it was out in the middle of the floor and I don't want to drag it back out right now.

Here's the back. This shows you how big the port is when you see it next to an outlet.

[Show spoiler]

Here is my current positioning for it, which I am going to change. Right now it is directly behind my TV. It's going to be closer to the corner. I did a subcrawl and found a couple good spots, but couldnt actually put the sub in either one of them yet, because of a couple different reasons. I will move it to the corner spot tomorrow.

[Show spoiler]

And finally, for size comparison, a blu ray standing against it.

[Show spoiler]

Wow an vx-30 totally jealous! You better wake the neighbours with that. Hell, I'd wake the entire block if I owned one

Checked out you graph. Pretty neat. But I have a question now, Is it true that anything below 80 decibels, for a sub, is not audible? How loud does a subwoofer need to be when measuring with an spl meter for it to be reference or enough to be considered adequate? Tom?
