They specify subtitles for the movie, but not for the OVA... will this be like the Japanese release and there will be no subs for the OVA?
We'll know the full details in about 10 days when the preorder goes up, but there's no chance the OVAs will be dub-only. That's just not a thing that happens for catalog titles that didn't have dub-specific cuts back in the day. I presume they didn't mention it specifically because there won't be two different subtitle options for the OVAs.

I need to know more about the packaging. If this is like the Star Wars books with disc slips, I'm out, I don't need an Ultimate release. Ill take the standard Amaray/Chipboard.

Crunchyroll's the exclusive US retailer, eh? Figures that would happen, but I still don't like it.

Zero is fine. It's Macross largely in name only, and I disliked the cliffhanger; Frontier's second movie did the same thing, I wish Kawamori would have the balls to commit, but I digress.

Additional editions of Macross Plus will also be available for France and other European territories to follow, with more details to be confirmed later in the year.
So, for those of us who don't like sets that aren't shelf friendly, we're gonna have to import from France/UK if we want something smaller? Kinda sucks...

One of the best things about Macross+ is the sound track, all I can say is WOW!

New Update for Macross II

Quote:
Time for a project update!

Work on the OVAs continues at a steady pace. The subtitles for the japanese language track have been completed and are currently being reviewed to ensure all the fine nomenclature details are correct.

Justin Sevakis and his team at MediaOCD are working hard on the color grading and restoration of the 4K transfers. They report that everything seems to be in excellent shape and most of the restoration work is dealing with occasional dust and film weave.

Here's an example of the work-in-progress; first a raw film frame, and then the color-graded (but not yet restored) and framed final frame.

Quote:
Regarding the english dub, we're happy to announce that we've managed to obtain the audio track of the english theatrical release, which was only ever shown in theatres in North America.

The main difference between the theatrical release and the DVD release centers around the recasting of two parts; Dennis Lone and Exxegran. Dennis only appears in episode 1, and in the DVD release Exxegran was recast between episodes 2 and 3, and thus is played by two different voice actors.

In the theatrical release, Dennis is recast and Exxegran's lines in episode 1 and 2 have been re-recorded by the second voice actor -- thus the performance is consistent over all 6 episodes.

There are other minor differences in the edits because of the lack of episode title cards and eyecatches in the theatrical version.

Our current plan is to use the theatrical release as the basis for the main english soundtrack, but also include the DVD episode 1 and 2 audio on the disc for completeness.

Even this far into the project, new materials are still being discovered in archives in Japan and being incorporated into the project. The latest discovery is a pristine print of the eyecatch sequence.

Quote:
As for the artbook, we've completed the restoration of the settei and the first pass of the settei translation; like the subtitles, it's going through a checking process to make sure all the nomenclature is correct. We've also translated all of the print interviews -- 6 in total.

The artbook is huge -- looks like it'll be just over 200 pages, with about 40 pages of full-color illustrations.

Finally, Mikimoto-sensei is hard at work on the new packaging art, and we hope to get a draft of that later in the summer. He has also agreed to take a stab at doing a custom embroidered patch design for the project!

There's a few other surprises that we're working on that we're not quite ready to announce yet, so stay tuned!

Best, Robert & Natsumi

Already dreading the ridiculous markup this’ll get from the CR store… might have to re-evaluate how badly I want this after all.

Don't the audio options on the OVA slightly contradict their own blog? I thought we were getting the Manga dub for eps 1-4 and the BV dub for ep 4 - the product info states the opposite. Can they not just include both dubs for 1-4?

It doesn't, the Bandai Visual dub is the same as the Manga dub for the first 3 OVAs, only the 4th is different as that was created for the Japanese release later on to fix some things, including the manga dub of the 4th OVA as an extra means all bases are covered. as for why its that way, think of it as the Bandai Visual one is the approved dub from a licensor point of view (regardless of anything else, the Bandai Visual dub doesn't have the music issues that the Manga dub did for the final OVA).

If only AnimEigo got Plus, I feel like the upgrade would be just as amazing as II's, especially since Plus appears to be a Datacine scan

Based off the UK price, it looks like we're going to be around $200 in the US.

Sheesh, I only spent 13,000 yen on the JP BD box back in 2013

Granted, the yen was much stronger back then, around 85 to the dollar IIRC.

And the JP box's booklets have less pages, I assume. Betting the printing is nicer, though.

Well, unfortunately I didn't begin collecting movies when Laserdisc was a thing, so this set completely goes over my head. I guess, at best, I'll just keep my Jp import set and hope that maybe I can score the new discs alone so I can do a simple swap. Cuz there's no way I'm paying near $200us for a bunch of cardboard that I'm never going to be able to display with my disc collection.
