Asked this in a different Ghibli thread but didnt get a reply: I have the old US Disney/Buena Vista blu ray releases of Nausicaa, Mononoke, Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart and the UK Studio Canal releases of Wind Rises and Marnie. Are any of these worth upgrading to a newer release or are any improvements marginal?

Thanks for the links, its a pain browsing through several threads with hundreds of pages. The impression Im getting is the improvement isnt very big, if any, in terms of picture quality except for Nausicaa, which always looked a bit off to me on the Disney release. I wish there ware direct side by side comparisons available but except for Nausicaa I couldnt find anything.

In my opinion, go with GKids for most all of the movies. Once you find the correct release of any film with the best translations and subtitles, the video and audio differences gets into that territory of "enthusiast only selection." PCM, 2.0, DTS, lossless... It's all kinda meaningless to someone like me who listens to everything out of his tv speakers anyways, so I never have to be picky with that aspect. But if the video is overly scrubbed, DNR'd, or color timed differently, then that's a big deal. Luckily for the most part all Ghibli movies look pretty good by anyone company that's released them, so there isn't a whole lot of research you're gonna need to do to figure out who has the best bitrate, unless you're an enthusiast
Still, Nausicaa is the only big video difference between Disney and GKids when you see side by side screenshots. In motion they both look fine, so you're just gonna have to make a personal judgement on what color temperature you prefer and go with it. For me, though, because Disney has the burned in credits I default to GKids as the way to go an am fine with their color pallete. Just my $0.02 =) |

I watched the GKids blu of Princess Mononoke last week and the presentation was fantastic, took me back to seeing it in the theater during its US run (the Japanese language version). Really great disc.
I only need to get Kiki's with a slipcover and I'll have the ones I want. |

Does anyone know how the Studio Canal version of Princess Mononoke stacks up in terms of the transfer and subs? Also Id like to confirm that the Japanese releases have English subs? Theyre pricey but I might just get one or two titles.

I originally posted this last month elsewhere, but I wanted to copy it here, so future buyers might find this information and avoid making the same mistake that I did.
Last year, whilst building my Ghibli collection, I got snookered with a bootleg of When Marnie Was There 😤 Trouble is this is one of those releases that is scarce and goes for beaucoup buxxx on the aftermarket (with the all-important slipcover ofc, a “naked” copy can be had for $20 on amazon.) So i waited patiently. And like seven or eight months later, I done did snagged an authentic one, for a paltry $20.44 shipped. Wonderful! In these photos, the bootleg is on the left, and the OG is on right. You can see the boot is more saturated, and has embossing on the main characters. It being bilingual isn’t a factor, the people who booted it simply used the Canadian release as their template ![]() To their credit, it’s a well-done boot. The disc art is spot-on, and the DVD is even a properly replicated disc 😮 The blu-ray, unfortunately, is a burned disc, and thus its longevity will be greatly reduced due to the format So anyway, keep this in mind when shopping for a copy of When Marnie Was There. And eBay is absolutely lousy with these things. If you see someone crowing that it has the slipcover, AND they have or have sold 10+ copies, AND it’s under $40... check the feedback, and proceed with caution. For the record, I paid $11 for the bootleg last year. So even when factoring in that cost, this movie was $31.44, which is only a few dollars more than it would have cost new from Best Buy when it first came out. |

The following are embossed on the bootleg:
- The banners at the top, including the letters in the banners - The movie title - The two main characters The following are embossed on the original: - The banners at the too, but not the letters in the banners - The movie title |

What's interesting is that it looks like your official version of the slip is a reflective foil slip. It could be the lighting, but I own a copy of 'From Up on Poppy Hill' which I bought from Best Buy and came with a foil slip. It kinda worried me at first, so I bought a non-foil slip for the same movie (I've since sold it), but that movie is the only slip I've ever seen a "foiled" version of until looking at yours (which again looks like a foil, but could just be the lighting in your pic).

I bought all the films when GKids originally released them, bought Totoro in this format and will gladly pick up Mononoke and any others they choose to do this way. The packages are lovely and I really appreciate getting the soundtracks included. No regrets on double dipping these for me.

GKIDS have announced the release of "Ronja, The Robber's Daughter" on Blu-ray on August 20. The release will feature Japanese language track with English subtitles. Bonus features will include an "Interview with Goro Miyazaki", "Press Conference" and a "Making of" featurette!
