You can OT it all you want, but there is no original 35mm conformed negative for this film. It was finished to a 2K Digital Source Master which was printed out to 35mm internegative for striking release prints from.

Does the 35mm camera original still exist, albeit not physically edited together and minus all the VFX tweaks as described by John Dykstra here: https://www.awn.com/vfxworld/dykstra...ious-basterds? Sure it does. But do studios rebuild 2K DIs shot on film into 4K on a regular basis? Nooooooope. So why that was expected to happen for this film I've no idea. No wait, I know exactly why: because people don't have a fookin clue

I guess Star Trek: The Motion Picture Directors Cut doesn't exist then, or the 4k of Raiders of the Lost Ark...

I didn't know Raiders was finished on a 2K DI back in 1981. Hey, you really do learn something new every day!

While this is not on tonight's menu for viewing, I just had to sneak in an appetizer sneak peek.

First thing first, either FaHs equipment or setting are bjorked or that dummy popped in the BD, because this transfer is not dim or dark. The UHD is definitely a brighter overall presentation then the BD.

Being brighter and with the range now open it has a contrastier punchier look. Black looked to be a bit elevated here. You notice it immediately with the chapter titles as the black background doesn't disappear into the black bars on the screen as the BD does. But the image isn't washed out either, opening up quite a bit of shadow detail. You'll see this immediately in the cabin in chapter 3.

Grain is more pronounced likely due to a combination of HDR and upscaling.

Last thing is the colors. Early DIs on BD tend to have this either yellow or green overall cast that makes colors either oversaturated or sickly. Once again the UHD eliminates this and you get a far better balance of neutral colors. Primaries draw more attention to themselves.

I will say I really didn't see much in expanded range in bright areas. May not be much there but I only sampled the first 30 minutes or so.

I was going to say the good news is that whoever complained about it being bark was dead wrong, because the bad news is that whoever complained about it being too bright was semi right. The blacks are raised, immediately noticeable from the Weinstein logo. I'll leave it to you experts to determine if this is an error, or just a byproduct of a more accurate picture in every other regard. But, to me it's a significantly better transfer and skipping it is your choices to make. I only spot checked, but there are changes in the colors as well (the title screen is more of a primary yellow than the mustard yellow it was before, but the neon teal on the cinema sign is the same on both transfers--I didn't notice or pay attention to any other color comparisons in my back and forth).

I give it eleventeen Nazi scalps out of 10, and look forward to the ongoing discourse in this thread.

Is this the most embarrassing comment in the history of these forums? It's certainly possible.

What happened to the thread title as it was a few minutes ago "The Inglourious Rubbish Warrior Basterds 4k UHD Thread"

I think ccateni broke the forum.

Fantastic, filmic transfer. This is a total non-controversy. Films at Home can go suck it. Not only is there obviously something wrong with his settings there’s also a screw loose in his brain since he’s also doubling down with his fake news about this transfer.

I'm not into nits or any of that, but this is the best transfer this film has had available for purchase. That's all I need. Definitely bright in some areas, but it wasn't a distraction for me. Love this film.

You guys were just sold a 4k that was remastered from a worse transfer of the original 35mm.

LMAO. Jesus H. Christ.

Has it not been explained on nearly every page of this thread for the past week why a 2K DI was used to master this UHD?

It's just trolling at this point. Either that or you're being willfully ignorant.

Being new to anything and not knowing a great deal is completely understandable, we've all been there.

Being a forum member for six years before engaging in a woefully unbalanced pissing match with someone who is widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable members here:

Curious why all of the sudden is there general interest in the technicalities of how 4k masters are made? In the past no one seemed to care about that outside of forums like these
