In a perfect world, yes, I'd love it to be included - but it really doesn't make enough difference that I feel like it's some cinematic tragedy. The footage does give a bit more "bite" in some cases - though, some of it is preference as well. I've heard it argued that, for example, the brief shot of Steve's guts in the beginning is definitely gorier, but that some people find the face close-up that it replaces from the theatrical was one of those "what you don't see (yet) is even scarier" moments. Some people also prefer the kinetics of the sped-up final shot of the opening - it's the same exact shot, just twice as fast. I think what I see most people get excited about is the few inserts during Billy and Stu's "battle" - but to be honest, I think the best addition is actually the 2 extra seconds you get of Kenny's death. It has the most impact there for me, because it was a well-acted moment where you see him realize what just happened. But yeah - talking about it in detail makes it sound like a lot more than it really is. I doubt most casual viewers would really notice in motion. |

That’s a nice trailer, and the transfer definitely looks like an improvement. Not surprised at the lack of unrated cut. Big studios usually aren’t as aware of them. Just look at Warner neglecting JGTH’s unrated cut for the Friday the 13th tin set. This was going to be even less likely since it hasn’t legally been available in the US since VHS/Laserdisc. The unrated footage is also almost certainly not a part of the cut negative, and Paramount/Miramax would likely need to source a secondary element for it like an interpositive.

I suppose that’s technically possible, considering it’s literally seconds worth of footage. Those frames could still be within the OCN and Paramount just went ahead and scanned it as-is, without realizing it’s the “unrated cut.”

I’m not sure about current Canadian rights at the moment since for the longest time it was eOne/Alliance over here, but they’ve seem to have been losing some Miramax titles lately anyways so I believe Paramount does have worldwide rights.

I like having dual format 4Ks with the BDs included, but Paramount keeps putting these out WITHOUT them! Started with Days of Thunder. I am getting to the point that I'm only going to make my own combo packs if I already own a disc on BD format in some shape or form....simply because I don't feel like dropping a format option completely without a replacement. I already have the old Scream BD, so I'm either going to just pair that disc with the 4K, or buy the new BD if it's remastered, and include that, in effect replacing the old BD. So either way, I still have a standard BD of this particular title. If it's a title I never owned a BD of, there's nothing I'm really losing or dropping if one isn't included. I just don't feel like buying everything twice going forward.
But I guess this could be dependent on the BD. Some might be completely unwatchable compared to the BD. Ideally a BD would be of good quality like Days of Thunder. If the BD to include in a combo pack looks like hot garbage, I guess I wouldn't put much effort in keeping it around. Last edited by Brian81; 08-11-2021 at 12:32 AM. |

eOne still has the rights in Canada, at least digitally.

I have no knowledge to give, only the basic notion that tastes change, trends change, transfer systems change, video systems change etc etc. It’s like aksing who made the sky blue: it just is. And as that old (as in, ancient) transfer was messed up in so many other ways it’s not worth dwelling on why it’s as shitty as that: it just is.
