My standard edition Shang-Chi arrived from Amazon.jp in just 5 days to the US from Japan. It came in the better box packaging vs the Black Widow's cardboard envelope. They also honored pre-order price guarantee.

"We will inform you that the following products you pre-order have been reduced by ¥2,073 from the order price. Because the price of this product dropped after ordering, the price guarantee for the pre-order item charged the customer to the lowest price."

Price on order date: ¥8,800
Price charged at shipping: ¥6,727
Lowest price before release date: ¥6,727
Quantity: 1
Total Savings: ¥2,073

Now the overpriced shipping might be justified for the steelbooks better packagings as the weight is superior than the cardbox paper envelope they shipped Black Widow's 3D stellbook.

As long as it’s from the Blu-ray, it should match up, as I don’t think the Japanese release adds any extra studio logos or anything in the intro that should change the length. Worth a try at least if you don’t want to wait! That’s what I’ll be doing when my disc comes in if nobody else has posted one smile

In bright scenes, sure, the contrast will let the black bars effectively disappear, but in dark scenes there's not a projector/room combination in the world where black masking won't significantly improve the way it looks: Give it a try - you'll never go back..! (I might have mentioned before that this is why I detest variable aspect ratio films..!) Leaving the screen unmasked just to enjoy a few "IMAX" moments just isn't worth the sacrifice, to my eyes.

And "IMAX" on a 3D Blu-ray: So, quite apart from the fact that no one is watching in actual IMAX at home, it's not even 4K! It's just a 1.78:1 image (or 1.9:1, or 4:3, or whatever the hell it is) - but that's all it is.

I'd love to see a bunch of side-by-side comparison shots of stills from Shang-Chi, "IMAX" vs 2.39:1, if anyone can whistle some up. If it was very meticulously composed to look correct in 1.78:1(?) - then that's the shape I'd like to see it in at home; if for 2.39:1, then that's the shape I'd like. I find the notion that a film can be composed with a "safe area" when cropped to be an affront to the art of cinematography.

I've spent almost my whole life defending 3D against the accusation of being a gimmick. But, IMAX - that's a gimmick (for movies) in my opinion. And, unlike 3D, it's one that irreversibly harms the look of the film.
JVC’s have great contrast at full black (0% ADL) BUT go slightly above that level and the contrast falls off a an absolute cliff! It is even worse than a Sony!

FYI The average ADL of movies is 8% – 9.6%.

Plus, you have already acknowledged, in most instances the switch to IMAX AR increases the DEPTH of 3D and again if you dont want more depth then you ain’t a 3D connoisseur!

Watching the 3D disc in 2D tonight to check for shifting aspect ratios and noticed that while the height stays constant, I do see the picture fluctuate on the left edge of the screen. One point in particular around the 14:38 mark, the image appears to slowly expand to the left after the character walks off screen. Looking back at the Black Widow 3D disc, I also see similar behavior on the left side of the picture.

However, I certainly do blame the rest of the Disney conglomerate. They're the ones that completely abandoned the 3D BD market and have left their fans with difficult financial and/or ethical choices.

The hoops people are jumping through to watch Marvel movies in 3D at home are ridiculous. We've got people watching this movie in Japanese so the English subtitles aren't as distracting. Someone recommended using a phone to read subtitles while watching the film. People are spending time and energy copying multiple versions of the film and combing elements to create a corrected viewing experience.

All this for the low low price of $80.

Again, glad to have some way to view this at home. At the same time Disney leaving us with Japanese imports as the only 3D option is a real kick to the groin and leaves a lot of room to complain.
I don’t blame them either for the lack of English subtitles for the non-English speaking parts, but I also do applaud Walt Disney Studios Japan as well for continuing to support 3D BD at least for the MCU films in Japan.

Glad this film still got a blu ray 3D release in Japan, via a 4K/3D combo pack though.

There are plenty of Japanese BD’s that don’t offer any English support at all. This isn’t uncommon for Japan. Before Blu-Ray you often had to buy a HK edition of a Japanese DVD/ film because the Japanese edition didn’t have any English support
True.

But I have imported Blu rays of some Japanese films from Japan that have English subtitles examples like Sekigahara, Tarara Samurai (2017), Aegis (2005) as well some other films in the Japanese film with English subtitles section, yes not all Japanese BDs released in Japan have English subs, I have also come across that when I went to play the Japanese BD almost of the Japanese BDs I have don’t have a menu at beginning and it plays the film after disc startup, so I would have to turn on the English subtitles with the remote manually.

I haven’t picked up this film yet and I’ll get to it when I can, but for me I know that subtitles won’t matter for Shang-Chi, and I know that won’t be disappointed with the 3D in Shang-Chi.

While most of the people here are okay with using subtitles the whole time if they have to, it does seem most people here would prefer to also have the option to have subtitles for just the Chinese dialogue. Some of us are not able to enjoy the movie properly without that option.

And once again, because I know how you're going to respond: Literally nobody wanted the disc to not have full english subtitles. (or any other language)

Was able to watch this last night on a 120" screen with Dolby Atmos (meh..) and correct subtitles (yay).

Ok opinions will vary but I thought the 3D was absolutely great. Plenty of depth throughout with lots of layering. Really good separation and great sense of space. Lot of objects were converted to true three dimensions rather than just stacked in layers. Arms, spears, etc.. that reach from back to front have real progressive depth.

Not much here for pop out fans that I recall, a couple spots but they're very brief.

I'm sure there are some things that could be nitpicked (subsequent viewings will probably be more critical) but overall I think this is about as nice a conversion as can be hoped for.

Now the aspect ratio... ugh. I'm quite certain I'd have preferred this with the larger frame format. What looks pretty good in 2D suddenly feels cramped in 3D. Boils down to what others have complained about; shooting an entire film for multiple aspect ratios results in almost everyone getting an un-optimized viewing experience.

There are clearly sequences that were designed to really shine in 3D IMAX. I could tell, and I wished they were included. Conversely, in 2D the IMAX format just leaves the buik of the movie with weird framing that wouldn't be used if not protecting for a scope presentation. This film has really left me with a new appreciation for the other Marvel 3D releases with switching IMAX scenes. Proper framing and impact as director intended for *every* scene.

Anyway, considering the state of 3D I'm quite happy to have this and overall this is definitely a win.

Can anyone who's seen the film help me out and let me know which scenes are in Mandarin (at around which point of the film)? I didn't get a chance to see it in theaters and waited to watch it until I could in 3D, but I just want to be ready to turn subs on for the first time during the Mandarin scenes. Thank you.
