I can't say for sure, but I'm sure we're only getting 13 minutes because there are 3 films now. I'm sure if it was going to be 2 films there would be much more extra footage. I'm sure some stuff that didn't make it into the first could have possibly been moved to the second.

A mere 13 extra minutes seems like a blatant cash grab. I will buy this because I am a fan and enjoyed this movie. It just seems like it should've been added to the original film so me, and many others don't have to buy the same movie twice, a few months apart.

No one is making people buy it twice. I didn't buy the first release knowing that there was an extended coming. I saw it in theaters and can wait till the extended is on Blu-ray before I watch again.

If you were just impatient and wanted to watch it again you could have always rented it

I can't wait for this. I held off watching the movie again considering the extended edition, let alone buying it.

Regarding the artwork, it could have been better. The 3D lenticular of the theatrical version looks better IMO.

If they're somewhat consistent with that design then I don't mind it that much. But if the other two releases look nothing like that then it's not real good. I'd prefer there be no picture at all on the front to be honest but that one looks fine.

What a rip off this is, they should have just released this edition in the first place, money grabbers.

I buy these sets specifically for the extras. the extra footage is an added bonus for me.

It's not "money-grabbers". If you were here when LOTR first came out, you should have known better.

I don't see the problem, if you have ordered the theatrical version, sell it.

My plan is to buy all the standard editions (hopefully Wal-Mart continues with the digibook releases), and then wait for an extended edition box set.

That seems like a pretty good idea. I'm sure my 3D theatrical releases will be near worthless at that point but I will have probably watched them each 3 times by the time the megabox comes out.

This, and LOTR, is mine and my wife's quintessential movie match. No doubt when the megaset comes, we will sit down and watch all 3 on one winter Saturday. We might even follow that up with LOTR:EE marathon on Sunday.

It looks like Amazon has a listing for the Bilbo / Gollum statue by WETA

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E9HML1Q

It's one of those ones where you can be notified when the pre-order is available.

Well, as soon as it's available I'll be pre-ordering! Haha. I just wish the 3D cover wasn't so.. "meh". I much prefer the 2D cover... but not so much as to pass on the statue lol.

And hopefully after all three extended editions come out they'll offer a box for those of us that bought them when they were released instead of waiting (like when the Return of the King extended edition came out).

I do wonder if both the banner and 'picture' part will be removable, offering something classier underneath. The use of film art might be just to grab people's attention on shelves, since it is more eye-catching and immediately recognizable. Otherwise it doesn't really make sense to go with that nice brown frame, unless that's the cover of the amaray underneath (which is quite possible). They may as well have just stretched the middle art for the whole cover I feel.

I don't need the 3D version, but I would like the statue. Hopefully, that will be about $50.

There's still the possibility that some retailer might offer the EE in digibook form?

How is it a rip off? If anything it was quite the opposite as Peter Jackson was very up front about these EE's coming out.

Yeah I was going for the 2D version before I saw that statue version. The price will decide what version I get.
