It's just never conventional, and the focus is always way beyond its surface / the norm.

Wolf's Rain looks like the closest thing on your list to what Evangelion is. A somber journey through characterization and mood, though again Evangelion is far more playful with experimentation, where almost each new episode sets up a unique new genre scenario and molds itself to its respective tropes, bringing them uniquely into Evangelion's world and narrative and then using them to highlight and explore its characters. It's a deconstruction of far more than simply the giant robot genre.

Though as I said in my previous post, it certainly does get a lot more "fun" for a good chunk of time with Asuka's introduction. XD
It's funny you mention Asuka because she's who I've been looking forward to the most in this series. I've always liked the look of her character, even before today when I began watching it. I definitely plan to stick around and continue watching the series though, its enjoyable enough. The animation is incredible too.

Definitely there is an art to translation, even if you’re fluent in a language. The Orange Road English translations I borrowed from the library were too literal and didn’t flow well, but luckily found the official Japanese site online.

I don’t have Netflix but from the screen caps of the Kaworu “suki” scene, I always interpreted him to say “like” over “love” since I always felt Shinji wanted someone to connect with. Then again I read an interview with one of the staff who horribly referred to the episode as “homo anime”, so maybe it was intended as love.

Seems pretty clear to me that they intentionally or unintentionally de-gayed the situation.

And that's the problem with translations. Suki doesn't specifically mean like or love , and can be translated either way since love in English is also kind of vague thus the 'Do you "love/like" them or "love/like love/like" them?' you'll sometimes hear in TV and movies. Plus a teen guy saying it to another guy is just as weird in Japan as it is in the US (at the time the show was made anyways, millenials seemed to have changed all the rules) since even married couples in Japan, who do love each other, don't even say it to each other because it's such a strong show of emotions for a usually very reserved society. (though even my family, unlike some I know, never went around saying "I love you" either)
To a Western audience (who would be the ones reading the subs) I think "love" would be the better translation since it more readily conveys the "oddness" of Kaworu saying it to Shinji, though, unfortunately, in the new climate of "acceptance" we live in "love" also conveys a unintended homosexual connotation so "like" is probably more suited for this day and age and isn't really a mistranslation of the Japanese.

Yup, just skimmed a couple of episodes and already found one.

[Show spoiler]Children vs Child

Just in case people are mega sensitive to spoilers. Remember that ADV had to fight to get it their way, which was the RIGHT way lol. Whatever. Actually surprisingly like the performances so far, but I'm fully expecting to be annoyed by some script changes. Oh well, could definitely be worse.

The Children thing is definitely suspect of the licensor having their hands deep in the localization for this one lol

You weren't kidding, it gets a lot better at episode 8. I watched through episode 11 and I'm liking it a lot more than the first 7 episodes.

BTW, once you watch the whole series, watch The End Of Evangelion. It's one heck of a trip. (and if you knew that already, then good)

Unfortunally, no. There are some subtitles here that you possibly sync up to them though: https://evangelionsubtitles.wordpress.com/nge/

About 1/4th of the way through. Really believe this new dub is leagues better than ADV’s.

People mad at subtitles that faithfully
[Show spoiler]render intentionally ambiguous dialogue from a celestial inhuman being disguised as a 14 year old boy who speaks and acts as he does in order to disarm another 14 year old boy, are driving me crazy.
Eva hops into the mainstream again and for the worst! Exactly how I predicted!

Meanwhile, they skim and troll the translator's twitter and call him out for having art of anime girl tank gijinka. Does anyone see the irony in that?

Find someone throwing a fit about "problematic/gross/male fantasy" anime girls and then the next minute they're mad their
[Show spoiler]14 year old "gay faves"
are being depicted ambiguously as they were written in a single instance. LMAO

There is absolutely zero ambiguity in the intensity of Kaworu's intended message to Shinji in the Japanese version or ADV's original subtitles, and as others have mentioned, the English word "like" in our society doesn't begin to accurately convey the full measure of it. The ambiguity lies within the nature of Kaworu's love and compassion, and in Shinji's response to it, rather than the intensity of the words themselves.

Plenty of characters in Evangelion like Shinji, quite obviously, and which Shinji already recognizes. Anything resembling Kaworu's completely exposed, genuine, and disarming love he expressed for Shinji, whether it's interpreted as sexual, romantic, or simply a deep and overwhelming affection for his unique life and soul from one being to another? Not quite. There's a huge divide there.

Yes, exactly. Using "like" is still technically correct though, that's what I'm referring to. He doesn't blurt out a clean cut "I am in love with you romantically" which is what a lot of people seem to have read him as. Not that that's wholly incorrect though.

Personally I find
[Show spoiler]Kaworu's "love" to be an embodiment of love itself in every form. He will "love" Shinji in whichever way Shinji wishes. How Shinji feels about this is ambiguous.

Ummm YOUR anime girls are clearly disgusting MALE FANTASIES! UGH! Please excuse me while I ship a couple 14 year old boys and draw them in flower crowns humping eachother! Gay representation! It's woke!

Disclaimer, kidding aside:
[Show spoiler]I literally don't care about fictional content in anything, I find the debate over what sexual themes are PURER than others, and how some hypocritically attach appeal to emotion politics to it all, to be completely tiring. And that concludes my ted talk.

Disclaimer #2:
[Show spoiler]Before anyone starts picking at my assumed orientation, let it be known for the nth time I'm a 28 year old gay man who draws cartoon gay porn for a living. Thank you!

The new dub isn't as bad as I thought it might have been. The characters voices haven't changed too dramatically, which is what I feared.

Some of us were awkward 14 year old boys dealing with our sexuality when we first saw this and that’s why we notice the difference now.

edit. But yeah, totally agree no one should get called out for sexy content.

My first impression after watching episode 1 is that the old English Dub sounds more like modern English Dubs while the new one sounds like it was made in the 90s.

So yeah original English Dub > New English Dub. Actors sound so amateur in the new one. Makes me think I could have done better. But it’s only 1 episode, but so far not impressed.
