You know Criterion will do these--no one else would dare to anyway--it's just a matter of WHEN.

And you keep mentioning L'aaventura so much that I might actually have to see it very soon.

15th is the most likely day, not before that. But thanks for the reminder that it's gotten near that time of month again.

L'aaventura would be awesome. That and Red Desert are two that I've seen (on DVD). Still need to check out L'eclisse, perhaps I will this weekend. And the other is presumably La Notte, haven't got to that one yet either.

(Been going through the Cassavettes box recently, interspersed with lots of other stuff, blu and otherwise.)

hmmm looks like that old style case is gonna haunt us forever.

I love driving all over to find a decent enough case for those titles. I can't chance it with an online order, no clue what condition the edges and corners will be in.

Just watched Curious Case of Benjamin Button and I loved it! Can't wait to start seeing some of the classic Criterion titles. I've got The 400 Blows, Bottle Rocket and The Last Emperor in my Netflix queue for this next week

Well Last Year at Marienbad is a new title (it wasn't on Criterion LD or DVD before), so perhaps they finalized the cover design well before they introduced the new cases.

What makes me so mad is that the standard DVD packaging so always so much more collectable and more sturdy than he paper blu ray case version.

http://www.criterionforum.org/DVD-pa...collection/582

and here is the link again for the BLU Ray package version so everyone gets the idea.

http://www.criterionforum.org/DVD-pa...collection/583

I feel like we get the short end of the stick, the DVD get literally SOLID packaging and the Blu Ray gets packaging that doesn't hold its own shape. It is very cheap.

If they want to do the paper cases then FINE do them exactly the same as the DVD version just shorter I don't mind if they are thick as long as they open from the spine not top and bottom and the paper stock is really good.

Actually, now that I've seen the DVD packaging for Last Year at Marienbad, I kind of have to disagree with you. While the Blu-ray packaging is just as bad, if not worse, the DVD packaging isn't great either. I always felt that the slide-out inner-case style was cheap in a way. Yes, it feels sturdy to the touch, but it's movement is flimsy to me. I preferred the figure eight DVD cases or the double-wide black plastic DVD cases.

I have yet to handle the new clear Blu-ray case, though.

I've been reading all the glowing reviews for The Friends of Eddie Coyle DVD and It's driving me nuts. I find it near impossible to justify spending Criterion prices for DVDs at this point. I can understand if they don't upgade every title, but they should at least give the Blu-ray option on all new titles.

I can relate to this, and I too have been hesitant to buy even a Criterion DVD now that they have included Blu-ray. However, with The Friends of Eddie Coyle, the Criterion DVD is presently THE ONLY DVD, so any DVD rental store offering the title will have the Criterion disc. You could rent it and if you love it, buy it. If you don't, then you've only spent a fraction of the money.

Will do Pro-B, though it may be a while since I'm currently in the middle of bidding on a house. Anxiously awaiting news on that later today. Has a large living room (16'x16') that would be really nice for a HT set-up. Though I'd prolly have to upgrade my 32" TV...what a shame

Ahh CC Always on tha ball about the new pre-order date! Hopefully one of the newly announced titles is not Howards End. Unless September could be the first month with 3 (gasp) blu-ray announcements...

Actually, don't think it was. But anyways, suspected that if DVD got cardboard packaging, the blu-ray would too. This confirms my suspicion. (Guess I could throw in an "I told you so" or two, if you read back a bunch of pages.)

I agree with your disagreement. Criterion cardboard packaging has always been prone to damage, particularly during shipping. Also is typically pre-damaged if you try to buy at store (which is no easy task these days). Their cardboard blu-rays are similar.
