I bought a Blu-ray title yesterday during the Black Friday sales which was UFO: The Complete Series. I think it was my first time buying Blu-ray during Black Friday. At one point earlier this year; that boxset was priced at £75 on Network's website in the UK. The last price was at around £35. When I bought it though; it was offered for £14. But when I ordered it the price went down lower to £11.67 + £6.70 for shipping.

I have never seen this show before. I don't even know if this show is available on digital or not. Either way I wouldn't care how this show is made available for sale. If it's available on Blu-ray & it interests me; it's a definite purchase for my own collection.

That looks like a great deal. I don’t remember that show but love the purple hair. I grabbed 7 titles that were their lowest prices of the year plus a couple of CDs and a Fury poster. Not close to A Vilya spend, but still a pretty good haul. Curious if Cyber Monday will have anything to offer.

I spent a very minimal amount on Black Friday. I bought the BD of Sicario 2 for $5.99 and the iTunes version of First Reformed for $4.99.

That about does it for me.

Finally got a 4k player. The a/v difference compared to streaming is minimal.

The biggest negative for 4k streaming is just the amount of data is takes. If you do a lot of 4k streaming you will have an expensive internet bill. That’s the main reason I got this player

I did a pretty good job resisting over this holiday weekend; I only ordered three 4K discs. Two were priced at $9.99 and one was just $7.99!

Still, I bought 80 titles this month and that is way above normal. I typically buy 20-30, so I went a little wild, but you gotta be a wild man sometimes.

Congrats on your new 4K player! You might notice more of a difference as you play more 4K disc titles. Just like with blu-ray before it, 4K discs are not all created equal.

I found the difference between 4K streaming and 4K disc to be noticeable, but perhaps not dramatically so. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your new 4K disc player!

There were some really good 4K deals to be had for sure. I didnt see any Vegas odds on whether you would abstain or help the economy over the weekend, but my money would have easily been on you clicking something into your cart.

This thread is dead. Can we move it back to the digital subforum?

I forgot about it myself being tucked away in here.

I see no reason to move the thread, either.

This thread has gone through several periods of inactivity before only to return with a vengeance. I take breaks from posting on this website as I am often better entertained by actually watching my discs rather than simply discussing them.

I stumbled across an interesting experimental disc format called "Holographic Versatile Disc", or HVD, that is the same size as a blu-ray disc with a storage capacity of 6 terabytes! It uses both a green laser, at 532 nanometers, for data reading and a red laser, at 650 nanometers, for positioning and addressing.

"It employs a technique known as collinear holography, whereby a green and red laser beam are collimated in a single beam. The green laser reads data encoded as laser interference fringes from a holographic layer near the top of the disc. A red laser is used as the reference beam to read servo-information from a regular CD-style aluminum layer near the bottom."

6 TB storage capacity on the same size disc that we are already accustomed to makes 8K physical media possible if the ridiculous costs can be overcome. An HVD disc costs between $120-180 while a holographic drive to play them is estimated to cost $15,000.

Whatever comes of this, it does show that research is ongoing for physical media with much greater data capacity than what is currently on the market. Such research as this demonstrates that there is a foreseeable need for such physical media, whether it is for 8K or some other design.

Get your geek on and read about HVD here:

I'm inclined to agree. I realise that streaming is popular, but I've never accepted those who claim that physical media is dead or dying. Thanks for the link by the way....an interesting article.

Even more amazing are 5D Optical Storage discs made from silica glass with the data recorded in fused quartz commonly dubbed as the "Superman memory crystal." These tiny little discs, one inch in diameter, hold 360 terabytes of data! They have an estimated life expectancy of 13.8 billion years, which is the estimated age of the Universe itself, and can withstand temperatures as high as 1000 degrees Celsius! A typical house fire reaches just 593 degrees Celsius. It is recommended that these discs be stored at temperatures no higher than 190 degrees Celsius if you want to take full advantage of their life expectancy.

The entire print collection at the U.S. Library Of Congress is estimated to be just 10 TB. A single 5D Optical disc can hold the entire Library of Congress print collection 36 times over!

A single 5D optical disc can store 7,200 50 gb blu-rays! My entire library would fit on just one of these 1" diameter discs.

Fascinating technology and it exists now!

Really amazing, and thank you for posting this. Technology never fails to impress me, even if it is beyond my understanding at times.

Although my blu-ray collection doesn't compare to yours in quantity, one of these 5D discs would certainly go some way to free up a few shelves in my house.

This Thread has survived, but the Physical Discs are on their last Link. Even the Disk Gurus are saying that 4K is the last Physical Media. 8K TV's are here, but no Physical Discs, it's all Digital Streaming. It seems the only people buying 4K Discs are on this site. Anybody that I talk too is not buying Physical Discs, they just Stream. Physical had a good run, but if 8K Physical is not coming you guys will have to concede to Streaming!

There is no evidence showing that physical discs "are on their last link." New releases keep coming every week and in the same numbers as ever. Your favorite fantasy about the demise of discs remains as baseless as ever. Where is your evidence? Please don't repeat your silly little anecdotes about what you imagine that you observe at your local Walmart as proof of anything.

73 new releases came out this week on blu-ray and 4K. There are 83 such titles scheduled for next week. I had no trouble at all finding 81 titles to buy last month. There is NO sign of them stopping.

Bruceames in the Home Video Sales thread has reported that with 6 weeks left in the year, blu-ray sales are only down 2.5% for the year. This is a significant comeback. Since July of this year, blu-ray sales are UP 3.6%.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1011

I know people who both buy 4k discs and who have never visited this website, so it is good to see that you keep on making sweeping, and incorrect as ever, generalizations.

What the people you talk to are doing proves nothing, same as with the people that I talk to; neither of our social circles are large enough to be significant indicators of anything. You really think that the handful of people you converse with is a barometer for a worldwide market, don't you?

8K TVs are barely available and are quite pricey. Best Buy online offers exactly one model and for a cool $15K. Standards for them have not even come close to being finalized. Remember how the first 4K TVs had no HDR support? And then no Dolby vision support? Now's the time to jump into the 8K waters, so what are you waiting for?

There is essentially no content in 8K at this time other than the odd broadcast from Japan or little scenic youtube videos.

Few people have an internet plan that accommodates the demands of 8K streaming, so for the time being almost no one is viewing anything in 8K. If streaming 8k is anything like streaming in 4K, it will be an overly compressed shadow of what it could be on physical media.

I in no way have to "concede to streaming" no matter how, when, or even if 8K content becomes widely available. I will never purchase digital content. Rent, sure, but buy? Never!

If the day ever comes when I have to use the internet to get my content, I will still get it, but much in the same manner that many use the internet to get their music. I will only pay real "In God We Trust" money for a real product that is under my real control. In EULAs we do NOT trust.

Concede? You still don’t know us very well do you?

Now, where is my IPad, need to order the Dynasties 4K Blu-ray nature doc.

For several years I have been watching what developers are doing to supplement optical disc and magnetic disk for archival purposes. It is hoped they will develop a permanent data high density device that can be produced in large quantities at a low cost.

In the mean time I will continue the purchase of CD, Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray disc.
