That's insane. That would have Saban making several million per year more than Sean Payton, the highest paid NFL coach.

The scariest part is Texas can afford that.
Recruiting is Everything, and Mack Brown has been Hit 'n' Miss in that Dept.

Nick Saban can consistently get the big recruits. At least I think he can.

I hope Mack Brown and Texas can come up with a peaceful way to move on. It's not looking like Mack Brown is reading the writing on the wall right now.

I have a lot of respect for Mack Brown, I think he is a really admirable man. I hope he and Texas can come to a respectful ending for both sides.

Source - http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...as-texas-coach

Quote:
Mack Brown will continue on as head coach at Texas, according to a report from Bobby Burton of 247sports.com.

However, nothing has been announced by either Brown or Texas officials.

Brown, new athletic director Steve Patterson and school president Bill Powers met Friday afternoon, and, citing an anonymous source, ESPN reported that Brown was "fighting to keep his job."

ESPN, citing a source, further reported that Brown had told some close to him that he was going to resign, but became "enraged" and changed his mind when that decision was leaked to the media.

Meanwhile, Friday night as Brown was speaking at the Longhorns team banquet, Alabama coach Nick Saban, who had been reported as a top target for the Horns, agreed to a contract extension and raise to stay in Tuscaloosa.

The embattled Brown gave no inclination during Friday night's banquet that he would step down and told new athletic director Steve Patterson that he's looking forward to working with him.

"ESPN has had the story wrong," Brown told an ESPN reporter after Friday's ceremony. "Everybody just needs to slow down. I have a good relationship with my bosses, Bill Powers and Steve Patterson, and I look forward to making the best decision (about my future)."

Patterson also spoke to the crowd, saying of Brown, "Hopefully we'll be able to get together and work for many years to come," according to the AP.

Patterson did not discuss Brown's future with reporters afterward, and a UT spokesman said Brown and Powers would not comment further.

"When we have something to announce, we'll announce it," Patterson told the AP.

Texas just completed an 8-4 regular season under Brown, but the 62-year-old Horns coach came under fire after a 1-2 start that included losses to Ole Miss and BYU. Texas rebounded to finish 7-2 in Big 12 play, but lost its chance to claim the conference title in the final week against Baylor.

Texas will play Oregon in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.
Smart move by Texas. If you can't get the top tier coach you want then stick with Brown for another year rather than settling for someone even worse.

It moderately amuses me that people are reporting this as if it changes anything (other than Saban's salary)

IMO Saban wasn't leaving anyway.

Yes, he signs for more money and then leaves the next week.

Mack Brown is resigning at Texas but will coach the team in the bowl game. Should be interesting to see who they can get. Saban is out (although his contract doesn't have a buyout so he could leave if he wanted) and I don't see Tomlin, Harbaugh, or David Shaw taking the job. Art Briles and Kevin Sumlin will both be targets but I'd be surprised if they left for Texas, especially since both just signed new deals. Realistic options in my opinion are Vanderbilt's James Franklin and Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy.

I like how the Heisman guy gets up there, and everybody in the crowd is just like "name the damn winner" while he gives a 5-minute speech.

So proud of Jordan, coming in 3rd for the Heisman is nothing to sneeze about.

I'm literally sitting her bursting with pride and waiting for my text to him to be answered! Go HUSKIES!

Edit: Omg, I sound like I'm chilling, shaking, looking at my phone like..."answer me." I'm not, lol. We've been friends for a few years, so it's more of a, he will answer eventually.

There is no incentive for him not to sign for more money, because he can still quit at any time. The _only_ reason not to sign a contract for more money as a college football coach is if you think you can milk the current team for even more.

I'd bet if Texas came and offered him 50 million a year he'd be gone, in spite of just having "signed for more money".

I'm hearing Chip Kelly is one of the top names for the Texas job but doesn't he have to sit out two years?

Kelly has an 18-month show-cause penalty, so if a school wanted to hire him they would have to appear in front of the NCAA to explain why they shouldn't be penalized for hiring the coach. In addition if Kelly was hired during the show-cause period and committed any NCAA violations the penalties would be more severe. No coach with a show-cause penalty has ever gotten another job before the penalty expired.

Even if Kelly wanted the job there's no guarantee he could take the Texas job. NFL coaching contracts are nothing like college and usually say a coach can't leave for another job regardless of it's college or pro, so unless he negotiated it into his contract that he could leave for a college job (as Saban did with the Dolphins) then he couldn't leave until his contract expires. Since NFL coaching contracts aren't public there's no way to know if Kelly's contract includes language that would allow him to leave.
