You'll probably be impressed by both. Shawshank is No. 2 on my faves list and Ponyo is pure delight and lurking in my Top 20 somewhere.

i'm actually beginning to try and make a solid order for my top 50, and then work my way down till i hit all 580+ films i've seen. tall order i know, but i love lists.

i think the first way i'm gonna start is by figuring out the year each and every film was released and then making my "top 10" for each year (and then the rest for each year) and then place the top 10's together and then figure out where each film falls. i'm sure it'll take a few days, but i love a good challenge

I like lists too. I started by listing all of the films that I had awarded 9 or 10 out of 10 and had around 150.

Shawshank was No. 1 until Mulholland Drive displaced it two or three years ago.

The order inevitably changes when something is fresh in your mind though.

that's the most difficult part! when i finished The Wrestler, i was so hyped up on it could have shot to #1, but a few hours later i know it wouldn't be there. and that follows for a lot of my favorites. i think was separates my top 30-40-50 is that almost anyone of those i could either put at #1 or #30 and - to me - there would be no "weakness in the armor" for the films listed. and then there are the films i don't really like, but individual categories get high scores (a la for me, The Aviator) but do i like The Aviator more than, let's say Not Another Teen Movie which is a ridiculously over the top comedy - but one of the best spoof films (imo)? no. so i put Teen Movie ahead, even that kind of seems blasphemous because of what they are.

and then i have to figure out where to put Pixar movies. and animated films in general. almost any Pixar movie i could throw in and watch any day of the week, unlike Mulholland Dr. for example. but do i like Toy Story better than Mulholland Dr.? that's where the really trickiness comes in for me. and comedies. i have no idea how to place them. so maybe i'll just keep comedies and animated films off my list for now because it's so difficult for me to place them in a spot.

I'm hard to please when it comes to comedy. I don't like the dumb variety (no insult intended to those who do).

My faves list does have some of the more sophisticated comedies such as Amelie, Juno, As Good As It Gets, Dr. Strangelove and Being There. But they don't try to make you laugh with every line and run out of ideas after 30 minutes.

Pixar can make me laugh, as can something like Bolt.

Strangely, I laugh most at things like Fargo and Inglourious Basterds.

Everyone is different...

agreed. for me, it's just like Pixar's, animations and comedies are so different from sci-fi, drama, thriller, mysteries that's it's hard for me to draw a line and say "okay, i like drama more than 40 year-Old Virgin, but i like 40 Year-Old Virgin more than this drama". because even though i love Virgin, i love deep themed, dark dramas more. i could easily come up with a list of favorite comedies, and have a general idea where they would be on the list (i love Strange Wilderness, but it wouldn't crack the Top 200 probably) and i love Dumb and Dumber, but would it make the Top 50? probably not. but when assigning a temporary number to it, i would get too flustered.

so since i want to keep my hair in my head, when i make my list those 3 genres will be left off for now

I should be able to watch it tonight looking forward to it. I really have no idea what its about besides two guys in prison if I'm thinking of the right film.

And Shawshank is your #1 favorite movie right?

Bearcat, The Shawshank Redemption most likely won't blow your mind and it's not the best film ever made. However, it's a great film and I'm sure you'll love it.

107 people voted that it was not their #1 film. 20 did. 29 people didnt have in their top 50.

Whats better you ask? Well, if I stick ONLY with the genre (Prison buddy film) I would say that Papillon (1973) (Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen) is better in every way. And better by a long shot. More emotional. More poignant. More danger. Better acting by far. Insane locations and cinematography.

Now if we leave the genre, there are many better films.

Just my opinion though.

Excellent transfer for one of Apatow's better comedies, was well worth getting the exclusive for $10.
Get Smart 4.5/5
PQ 3.5/5
AQ 2/5
Excellent movie, transfer not so much, think I'll watch Ella Enchanted after MNF.

Man u was very surprised at the results and u even posted in the thread. We can do many other films and I bet we wont get 20 people to say its the best or their favorite films. That poll shows how highly regarded Shawshank is. Nuthin is 100% but those are damn good results and u know it.

Never seen Papillion so cant comment but I know for sure the Fountain isnt better! Got Em!!
