Megumi Ogata is Shinji, dub watchers do not give enough credit to Japanese seiyuu. No dub actor is going to come close to her performance, none of them are on the same level of acting. Evangelion has one of the all time best Japanese casts and every one of them did an amazing job. Many times sub watchers say "you're missing out on really good acting" and it's just hyperbole, but in this case it's true.

Eva has to be watched in Japanese. It’s integral to the experience. You’d be missing out on some of the best performances the seiyuu casted ever give. Neither dub comes close to matching the intensity and emotion behind the Japanese cast.

Because I prefer to watch anime with the English dubs. The only time I watch subs is if I have no other choice or on the very rare occasion I find the dub truly horrible.

Same. Dub is honestly the only way I will watch my anime, when I have a choice. I had to watch Bakuman subbed recently and it was fine but dub is otherwise a must have for me.

I used to watch dubs but since what FUNI did to Free never again. For Evangelion I chose sub years ago because it keeps the same cast for the Rebuilds none of the dubs do that, and god knows who 3.0+1.0's will have as its cast I bet both. As I bet Khara will do Worldwide release.

One thing I've noticed in the new dub, it sounds like they are saying "Nerf" rather than Nerv.
I should try and do a visual comparison to the Platnium DVDs... The teaser trailer made it look a lot better than what I'm seeing. |

How is this in any way gay representation? Kaworu isn't even human, and Shinji isn't gay. You can't want something to be something it's not and then claim special ownership of it. And don't lecture me that someone else's problems are more important than my problems. Sick and tired of people pulling that sh!t. ![]() |

I think you're the one stretching things to make it not something that it quite obviously is. Kaworu was totally gay for Shinji, or at least he pretended to be to mess Shinji up even more. Doesn't matter if Shinji isn't gay.

The point, as I saw it, was that Shinji had never been told by anyone that he was loved (except maybe his mother), so that when Kaworu said he loved Shinji, it was a turning point for him (Shinji). We’ve been following him at his lowest points, and him being with Misato, Rei and Asuka made him feel like there were people out for him, but still no romantic implications. As the series continues, Shinji slowly gets back to where he was at the start, with his self-esteem and happiness at its lowest, so Kaworu saying he loves him gave him a sense of hope that this world is worth living in and saving.
Does it matter if Shinji or Kaworu are gay? Not really. It was Kaworu saying that to Shinji which was the turning point in Shinji’s outlook on life. Or at least, that’s how I interpreted it. |

This isn't about name calling or some minor inconvenience making gay people uncomfortable so don't try and downplay it like "we all have problems" or "we're all the same can't we just get along". Take ownership of that bull. |

I gave my first thoughts on twitter yesterday, and yeah this dub is pretty bad especially Shinji, the speech he gives in episode 1 is just so lifeless and dull, Spike Spencer did a much better job at the part

I haven't watched the Netflix version and not really planning on it, tbh, but from what I remember from the last time I watched the series is that when Kaworu says the "I love you" line to Shinji, I never once took that to be said in a romantic kind of way but I don't give a frick either way. The twitter people should be happy because at least they'll have one more thing they can faux outrage over.

The reaction to the new dub is hilarious, and totally expected. Anime community has not been this heated since the Vic drama.
The new dub is serviceable. I am not hearing anything that I dislike. The only dub was also serviceable (if somewhat inconsistent). I watched the old dub back in the day, now watching the new one. I don't feel like I am missing anything. The new dub certainly is not bad. I can understand some folks preferring the old, but calling the new one bad is wrong. For a bad dub witness the first release of A.I.C.O on Netflix. That was an awful dub. Note, that has since be debubbed, and is much better now. Anno and Studio Khara wanted this, they wanted a new dub with an emphasis on the things they want. Don't kid yourself otherwise. This was not driven by Netflix revisionism, this is Anno (maybe with a small case of George Lucas disease). The HD video is outstanding by the way. Looks beautiful on my big screen. |
