But what's missing is some characterization that builds to and justifies the ending/ heart of the film. Plus the international version fixes a clunky edit or two.
So I think it depends how seriously you're interested in taking the film. If it's just a fun, hokey slasher to you (and admittedly, JBD ain't Shakespeare), then the shorter version's perfect. If you respect the writing to the point that you don't want to lose subtle nuances the filmmakers built into the story, then the international one is superior (IMO).

But they're also close enough that viewers who aren't big fans of the film could watch both versions and not even spot the differences. It's like extra dialogue in the already more dialogue-heavy scenes, and fleshing out the subtext rather than plot points. So it's not a wide gulf.
I actually think the regular cut is superior. The international version drags and also make some of the themes too obvious through on-the-nose dialogue and character interactions. I didn't find the dialogue you're referencing subtle; it just seemed like it made an interesting subtext into obvious text. However, if you're interested in seeing how those themes rise to the surface in a longer cut, then it's worth checking out.

Heads up! $13.99! this one is a truly absurd and good bit of fun! Obviously not a great film, but certainly worth $14 IMO

Well, okay, that's a good point. I may've oversold it. It's not exactly Jane Austen-tier dialogue you're missing out on in the shorter cut, so me calling it "subtle" gives it too much credit. But I do feel like the ending (trying to completely avoid spoilers, because the ending's kinda the best part of the movie) feels a little too much like "something cool that happens" as opposed to "something cool that's been boiling up this entire time." And the longer cut restores some of the groundwork that the writers were laying.

I had fun watching both. But the real gold is the Fred Williamson interviews on both discs. Those alone make the discs worth the price of admission.

Just my two cents worth. I thought Mean Johnny Barrows was a really entertaining crime thriller about a poor street kid crippled by a crooked cop who rises in the gangster ranks to become the top dog. A good performance by Fred Williamson. PQ is pretty good as I remember. If you like baxploitation gangster films, give this a try.

Death Journey is just not very good however.

Just my opinion.
