I don't like getting calls during a film, especially when I'm watching something that I'm emotionally invested in. If someone leaves me a message then I'll check it and call them back if it's important, otherwise I'll get back to them after the film is over.

Changeling

Director: Clint Eastwood
Writer: J. Michael Straczynski
Mains: Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan

Clint's Direction is meant for all viewers.

Plot:
Mrs. Collins (Angelina Jolie) has had her son taken from her and once reported to the police they found a boy that matches the description of her son. Once meeting the found child she quickly realizes that this isnt her son. The boy insist that she is his mom but she knows and has proof that he isnt her's. Along her battle to find her son she is illegally admitted into the psych ward.

My Take:
I enjoyed this movie for the most part. I thought the story was very interesting and very well told. In addition Clint Eastwood has a special way of connecting to all age groups and all film lovers. Back to the story, I dont know how accurate this story is but is crazy to know how thing were ran back in those days. The entire movie im like "how the hell does this happen". Now the negatives, I thought the the firs 45 mins of the movie was a little off. In saying that im talking about the acting and not the story itself. I think i little more time should of been taking to build up the love she had for her son and i could of connected more with her acting once her son was taken. It just felt very fake. After watching the movie the acting warmed up and left me satisfied.

Conclusion: This is a good movie that many people will enjoy. Especially if you are fans of movies like "The Shawshank Redemption". This movie gives you the moral relief on every level. Its well told. About this being Jolie's best performance I really cant comment on because i havent seen all of her performances. I would like to see "Girl Interrupted" before I give her that title. Good but not Great but very fulfilling. I personally dont think this film has allot of replay value so this is a rental but a good one.

Rent It First

I thought Jolie did a very good job overall. The only thing that bothered me was later on in the film, the constant
[Show spoiler]"he's not my son!" lines were repetitively delivered by Jolie, and hence felt robotic. Maybe that's good acting though? Maybe a mom in her shoes would feel in shock and say something over and over again, the same way?
. The only issue I had with the film was editing as the film seemed to naturally end
[Show spoiler]at about the 90-100 minute mark, when the cops were busted, and the last 45-50 minutes just seemed like an unnecessary drag out of telling the audience what it aleady knew

You're welcome! I told you that was an impressive lineup.

It's one of the best of its genre. I loved your review because it reflects the incredible amount of energy in the movie. So intense and thrilling at every frame. Its depiction of crime and corruption on the streets of Rio is absolutely perfect in execution imo. Its exposure of reality is simply engrossing and blows you away in a way only movies like Pulp Fiction and City of God can do.

It's currently at #103 in my tentative top 250 but that can change drastically by the time I release the list.

Antichrist (netflix instant)

Year: 2009
Director: Lars von Trier
Starring: Willem Dafoe (“he”) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (“she”)

I thought the film had a simple enough plot when I first read about it: a married couple dealing with the recent loss of their young child. But the film is much deeper than that. But I think it’s really up to the viewer to accept that there are themes here. Some, many, may just see this is as a film showcasing violence, smut and some major “WTF” make your skin crawl moments that would leave the Saw series in tears begging for the film to stop, while others will look at a more ‘artistic’ approach. So, what is it? Smutty violent nonsense or incredibly deep and darkly poetic? Um… I think deep and darkly poetic, but it took awhile to get there.

The film is really a tale of two halves. The first half is much slower paced. Learning a bit about these people and their troubled marriage and that “he” (Dafoe) - seriously they don’t have names, is a therapist, and that’s incredibly clear as he tries to help his wife get over the grief of their terrible tragedy. Of course everyone grieves in their own ways, and the film shows how different he and she deal with the situation. and how bad grief can push a person.

The second half is where the madness and wildness is on full display. For hearing rumblings about how freaky and brutal the film is in certain areas, I was a tad confused and thought I was watching the wrong movie. But nope, this was it. Just takes awhile to get going. But once it does it comes in waves and while there are only 6-7 MAJOR “WTF?!” moments that don’t last too long. They leave a much longer impression mentally than the scenes themselves. I could have done without some of the scenes being so vivid, I’m a big fan of “less is more” and I think Trier could have displayed this in a “less is more” way and have us understand exactly what’s happening, so be forewarned, are some scenes a bit “holy moly!” in nature? Yes. But they don’t stay for too long. Thankfully.

But I must say, for those who dislike animals in any sort of harm or danger, there are 3-4 scenes in Antichrist that have moments like this. Does this piss me off? Yeah. Because at least 2 of them seemed completely pointless. And I’ve stumbled across like 5 films in the last week or so that have this. I’ve got bad luck I guess. I didn’t downgrade the film however for having something I don’t like seeing, just stating for those who are in the same boat as me, you’ve been warned.

For the longest time I was gonna give Antichrist 2.5/5. I just didn’t get it and while I still don’t “get it” I think, completely (I have a ton of questions for tbizzle, surf and others who’ve seen it although if I didn’t get answers that’d be okay too) the last 40 minutes for as “whoa” as they are, really change the pace and “feel” of the film. And they are completely worth it and make the slower first hour much more satisfying when bananas really start to hit the fan (or acorns hit the roof ).

Individual merits for the film are all getting high praise from me.

Directing? I thought it was great. The first 10 minutes really had me hooked, and while after that I kind of fell “out” of the film, the directing was top notch and in the wrong hands this could have been a mess.

Cinematography? Awesome. Some very haunting, eerie images / feel. Not of the brutality, but of the woods, the fog, the cabin… it’s great stuff. Most full blown horror movies don’t get this right and drench the film in darkness. Not Antichrist. Very haunting feel. Loved it.

The performances. Dafoe was pretty good. I’m not a huge fan of him in anything he does. He seems to play the same role in everything I’ve seen him in, but good to great at times none the less. but man, Charlotte Gainsbourg was a beast here When she flips a switch halfway through the film, you really can sense that. Visually in her expressions, in her voice, her actions (of course) and just overall demeanor. If she doesn’t at least get nominated for some awards for “best female performance” that would be a crime imo. Honestly, as far as “women who portray a side of psychosis” Gainsbourg has to be in the discussion for top 5 and maybe even #1.

That all being said, this will more than likely (if I were to give percentages, I’d say 75/25) be a one time watch and be added to my “one and done” collection. Although, since for some reason, for as bizarre and wacky as the last 40+ minutes were, part of me thinks I may watch it again down the line (long, long, long down the line) which is odd. I also wasn’t exactly clear on the themes the film was presenting. The main one was obviously grief and dealing with grief and getting past it, but the whole
[Show spoiler]“beating women” deal and the devil
kind of went right over my head and the last image of
[Show spoiler]all the women (I think all were women) walking around the mountain…?
What did that mean? and how did it connect with the rest of the film? Maybe I missed some dialogue that explained this? I know
[Show spoiler]she was doing a thesis on it and there were pictures of women tied up during middle ages and whatnot,
but the lines did not connect for me there.

I’m surprised I’m rating it as highly as I do, but I’m gonna go with a 3.5/5. It may be bumped up once I understand what exactly some of the other themes were, and I still thought the first hour was a little slow and I was even bored at times, but some individual merits need to be recognized, so that added a point or so to the total and I’m not going to downgrade a well made film just because I didn’t personally like it or find it something I would want in my collection. There are hundreds of worse films, it’s just a matter of taste preference and how far you’re willing to give a film to tell you a story.

I don’t know if I would recommend it, per se, but for someone in to dark dramas that are able to look past what some might see as some unnecessary brutal moments, it can’t hurt to rent it / netflix it. Just be warned it isn’t as hardcore / brutal / gross as some make it out to be, but there are some moments I’m sure some won’t want to stomach or even hear about.

3.5/5

to bold part: awesome! like i said in the review, i was shaking typing it up. i didn't want to forget anything but i didn't want to give too much away. the complexities and layers of the film were great on so many levels. and i remember thinking during the film:
[Show spoiler]screw this. i wouldn't want to be a cop there! it's impossible to get anything done and NOT be corrupt somehow! (when the cops are talking to the tow truck driver and the car parts have been stolen)

i have City of God at #11 on my queue and it's looking more and more interesting to me as the films pass by

right now on my list, it could very well make my top 10. it's at least in the top 15. but i'm gonna give it a few days and let the film settle down before i actually try and roughly assign a number to it because right now i could throw it in the top 5 because of how awesome it was and how fresh it is in my mind. i'm also working on a top 200 list and i'm gonna actually try and put in order every film i've seen (580+)

i could easily sit and watch all 5 of his films straight through in a row. the only other person that would maybe come close to that would be Aronofsky, but i have to see the rest of his work. and yeah, definitely check out Hard Eight. it's great. so simple and yet just so... PTA i could definitely see the early workings of his more "complex" (in terms of amount of characters) films Boogie Nights and Magnolia at work here. great stuff

btw: have you seen Elite Squad?! HAVE TO!

i'm usually the same way, but it was a work phone call which i have to take. i literally have a separate cell phone for "emergencies" and that went off so i knew i had to stop and watch. and then the gf was getting food or something so i had time to pop on here and see what was happening.

i'm super addicted to this effin' thread

same. usually i'm always in a dark room (or as dark as it can get during the day) but since now the gf is usually with me she's one of those "i can multitask and still not miss anything types" so she tries to text, go on her laptop or do other stuff when watching movies. drives me nuts. she's gotten better though, but when we first started watching movies together i couldn't watch anything i wanted to that i hadn't already seen because she's wrecked the "movie viewing atmosphere"

check out this article with an all-you-can-eat-buffet of theme discussion:
http://www.opendemocracy.net/article...lars-von-trier

definitely bit more off there than i could chew, but got some good insights, like how the
[Show spoiler]thesis she was writing about how women are evil/bad matches perfectly with them being in eden -- the garden in the bible where Eve (woman) was tempted by satan, and because of her, sin was unleashed on the world. I think this is the main theme of the film -- I think Von Trier is basically telling us "Hey audience check it out -- your christian faith tells women that they're the scum of the earth and the cause of all sin and suffering. To reinforce to you guys how effed up that is, I'm going to make this film that is actually consistent with that view, despite how shocked you might be while watching it -- remember: its what your faith says" -- I'm not saying this, and I don't believe this. But I think this may be what Von Trier is trying to convey

seriously dude...read that article!! its awesome!!

by the way: your review was very close to mine -- initially thought i'd give it a very low rating, then really liked the last part. also think i may not watch it again, yet a big part of me tells me I will, especially after reading those themes in the article.

This one sounds interesting -- one of the few PTA's I haven't seen so I'll get on it!

Magnolia and Hard Eight for me. Punch Drunk Love was pretty interesting and I haven't seen Boogie Nights in over a decade, so I definitely need to revisit that now that it's on blu.

definitely bit more off there than i could chew, but got some good insights, like how the
[Show spoiler]thesis she was writing about how women are evil/bad matches perfectly with them being in eden -- the garden in the bible where Eve (woman) was tempted by satan, and because of her, sin was unleashed on the world. But I think this may be what Von Trier is trying to convey

seriously dude...read that article!! its awesome!!

by the way: your review was very close to mine -- initially thought i'd give it a very low rating, then really liked the last part. also think i may not watch it again, yet a big part of me tells me I will, especially after reading those themes in the article.

whoaaaaaaa. that article makes a lot of sense and connects a lot of dots that now form a line i definitely didn't see before. damn, that does kind of make me want to rewatch it and remember what i just read so i can see it all come together again, and maybe i will rewatch it - eventually.

but thanks for that link Surf! that article makes tons of sense.
so what would you think of the ending?
[Show spoiler]if, taking what the article said, was he setting the women / spirits free? or were they coming as harpies to attack him? i don't even know which one i think, but my mind first went to that they were free... but i just don't know.
