But, I find many of his early works great, as well. I think "The Purple Rose of Cairo" is a really amazing film.

I just finally got around to Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and was pleasantly surprised; it's a much sweeter film than I would have imagined, one of the sexiest films in years in my opinion.

No prob. Don't be afraid to get any Bunuel film in the collection. They are all worth it.

Agreed, and I agree with ccfixx as well. Some of Allen's best films have been in the past five years, such as Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. These aren't his best films, but they're up there with his best.

While I respect Woody Allen very much, put me in the group who is not really a fan. Though I do have a liking for his later films.

I wouldn't call myself a fan but I generally find all of his movies at least worth one viewing which is a lot more than I can say for many directors. I do think Annie Hall is completely charming and I have seen it more than the others.

Get the Bunuel film The Diary of a Chambermaid, because it is going out of print, so that will not be a Criterion blu.
I picked up the DVD of That Obscure Object of Desire since that's another one that is OOP. There's always the chance that there will be a Studio Canal BD in the future (like with The Third Man) but you never know for sure. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeois is another Bunuel title that is going OOP.

And Godard's A Woman Is a Woman is going OOP too, although right now it seems to be relatively easy to find.

Go region free instead of wasting money on DVDs and you will see a lot of films that you think are not out or not in the pipeline are available in other parts of the world.
Is Salo worth getting (on Blu-ray or DVD)? I'm region-free, but I'm not sure about a blind buy of this one. A lot of people have said they wish they could "un-see" it.

I would have trouble coming up with a suggestion for a movie that you should blind buy less than Salo. Try rentals/ library if you're interested.

got Darjeeling in my gold-box for $26.49 so not too shabby..... The vivid colors alone warrant the upgrade from my DVD of it at that price.

I think its an often misunderstood film. Most people, even die hard cult film lovers, dismiss it as empty and accuse it of being exploitative for no bigger purpose. While I agree its tough to watch I also think its a valid film from a respected director/writer who has given us numerous other films that cement him as a filmmaker who has depth.

I think a short study on PPP and perhaps a rental of some of his earier films might help you judge Salo with a less harsh eye BUT, yes, IMO, its worth owning and something every film lover should see.

Look, a cool book on Von Sternberg that comes out this fall (just after the Criterion silents) and the Publisher is The University Press of Kentucky. So yeah for my state.

SALO is a must own. I'm sure CC will get my back on that one. Having wanted it for so long and now having it, I couldn't be happier. Definitely one of my favorite criterion releases. It makes me happy just seeing it on the shelf. Going Region-free to get the blu is unbelievably tempting. Buy it asap.

Even if I loved Salo I could never see myself giving it a big, happy, warning free, must purchase recommendation.

But warning's spoil all the fun!

Fine. I highly recommend it, but be aware that the content and narrative are quite alarming, repulsive, and downright bothersome to many folks. To me, it's a tribute to excess and decadence amidst a complete lack of a moral center. Watch it, bring an open mind and, if need be, a strong stomach

I found and purchased both Port of Shadows and The Phantom of Liberty at a B&N store, today. I wasn't originally planning on buying anything on that trip, but I figured if there were out of print DVDs in stock, I might as well grab them.
