Received my first B&N shipment of the sale. Think I'll give The Leopard a shot first. Can someone tell me which of the two versions is considered the superior cut? I'm guessing the longer 185 min version?

Everlasting Memories
The Leopard

The Italian version. Hands down. The Leopard is one of my all time favorite films and one of the best criterion blu-ray releases to date.

Thanks, that's what I figured. American cuts of films are usually watered-down inferior cuts. All four of these films are blind buys. I'm going to try The Leopard first since it sounds most interesting.

Chad, I just finished The Leopard yesterday and was blown away by the PQ for an almost 50 year old movie. I have seen the film before, but never like this. The Italian version is the only version worth viewing, but it's still funny listening to the dub over Lancasters voice.

I'd actually like to the see the original cut which came in at over 200 minutes but the director preferred version is the 180 minute edition on disc one in the new set.

Fine. I highly recommend it, but be aware that the content and narrative are quite alarming, repulsive, and downright bothersome to many folks. To me, it's a tribute to excess and decadence amidst a complete lack of a moral center. Watch it, bring an open mind and, if need be, a strong stomach
Like I said above, a primer on PPP's life history, Fascist Italy, and his earlier films really puts Salo into perspective and I would urge anyone who is on the fence to do so before viewing.

But yeah, great film. The first Criterion DVD I bought way back in 99, maybe 98.

Just finished watching Grey Gardens (the 2009 film) and it was terrific. Really one of the finest films I've seen in some time. Can't believe this was just a made for TV movie. Lange and Berrymore were fantastic in the film. I'm really considering picking up the Criterion documentary this was based on.

I know of the film's reputation, so it isn't like I'd be approaching it completely blind. I have films in my collection like The Holy Mountain, El topo, I Spit On Your Grave, Anti-christ, In the Realm of the Senses, Thriller: A Cruel Picture, Jigoku, Audition, Ichi the Killer, and Martyrs, yet somehow I'm not sure if this would be too much for me. I think it's mainly the ---- eating that is making me hesitate to give this one a try.

I'm looking forward to watching The Leopard, but it's hard to find time to watch such a long film. I still haven't watched my Doctor Zhivago BD yet for that reason.

Have you ever seen John Waters' "Pink Flamingos"? That's one of my favorites and has many more "disturbing" scenes than "Salo" could dream of having. The only difference is that everything is presented in a comedic fashion in "Pink Flamingos."

I sure wish "Fallen Idol" and "Nights of Cabiria" were able to be part of the sale. Oh well, third party sellers time.

Ah, considering yr other noted films, which on a side note, we have much in common, I think Salo will be right up yr alley. The feces seen isn't to tough to take if you keep reminding yourself it's not real. ...or is it?! (it's not)

Hah, funny that you mention "Pink Flamingos" cause I was going to bring it up the same as you did, as being much more foul. It's fun to watch with someone and see what bothers them most. The birthday party dance surprise (was trying to think of a clever way to word that. ) is what gets to me the most. The dog poop seems to be the most common. Probably cause it is real.

Ovation is supposed to be showing an autobiography on Dennis hopper right now according to the guide, but the channel is apparently unaware of such things. Horse apples.

Has anyone here seen Weir's "The Last Wave"? Even though it's only on DVD, I'm strongly considering purchasing it now during the sale.

I just watched "Picnic at Hanging Rock" over the weekend (through Netflix streaming - which runs the anamorphic version), and was greatly impressed by it. But since that's already being released in other regions on blu, I'll wait to buy that as I'm sure Criterion will be releasing the blu of it in the next year or so.

However, I'm not seeing "The Last Wave" on blu in any other regions, so I'm thinking now might be the time to buy the DVD for $14.99.
