Source - Florida's Meyer feeling better, staying involved - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer is working out regularly, eating better and has gained 20 pounds since the end of the season -- all good news for the Gators. advertisement As for that leave of absence? Well, it might not even happen. Meyer, speaking publicly for the first time since Florida beat Cincinnati 51-24 in the Sugar Bowl, said Saturday night that his workload has been about the same as it has been during other recruiting seasons. The biggest difference is he is traveling less. He also plans to coach the Gators during spring practice. Meyer announced his resignation last month, citing health concerns three weeks after he was rushed to a hospital with chest pains. He changed his mind the following day and instead said he planned to take an indefinite leave following the bowl game. "I keep hearing about this time out," Meyer said. "People I'm closest to are going to demand I take some time off, but I tried that already. I tried a day and a half, and it didn't work." Meyer returned to the office, hired four assistant coaches and has assembled what is shaping up to be the nation's No. 1 recruiting class. Nonetheless, he has a series of heart and stress tests scheduled for next month. But he again declined to divulge details about his health. "I'm not going to get into that publicly, but so far the tests are coming back pretty positive," he said. Meyer said athletic director Jeremy Foley and his wife, Shelley, want him to take some time off after signing day next month. He indicated he might step away between signing day and spring practice -- something he hasn't done the last five years in Gainesville -- but added that he hasn't made any definite plans. "I've been instructed I have to. I'm just not sure what I'm going to do," he said. "I just don't know how long." Meyer made it clear, though, his daily routine needs to be overhauled. "I have to change some things," he said. "That's obvious." His routine already has been modified, starting with workouts and including better eating habits. "I feel real good," he said. "I've been working out a lot. I'm over 200 pounds, so I guess that's how they gauge it a little bit because I was not good there for a while. Doing a lot better." Asked why he lost so much weight during the season, he replied, "It's called ignorance or something like that." Meyer watched the first half of Florida's game against South Carolina alongside two big-time recruits, safety Matt Elam and defensive end Ronald Powell. "I'm excited about our staff," Meyer said. "I'm really excited about our team and recruiting's obviously going well." |

Oregon quarterback and projected Heisman Trophy contender Jeremiah Masoli is allegedly being investigated for stealing items from a fraternity along with teammate Garrett Embry. While they haven't been formally named as suspects a member of the fraternity stated they were the two players who stole items including 2 Macbook Pros (combined value $3,500) and a guitar ($900 value). In 2005 Masoli pleaded guilty to a series of robberies in California so it could be interesting to see how this turns out.
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindduc...ett_embry.html In addition to this Oregon's kicker Rob Beard was involved in a brawl over the weekend and ended up in the hospital intensive care unit but should be out of the hospital soon. Beard's teammate and fellow kicker Mike Bowlin was getting in a fight and when Beard tried to help break it up he was knocked down and repeatedly kicked in the face. |

It's incredible that average college students pull crap like that, let alone athletes who might possibly have the chance to make millions in their respective sport.
(Oh, and kidding about the knock on Eugene. The same stuff happens in Gainesville, Athens, Columbus, Los Angeles, etc. etc. Just not Miami... ![]() |

Well the reason I follow recruiting is first and foremost pay attention to the talent headed to Miami, and secondly keep mental notes on all the big recruits and where they end up signing. It's amazing how some of these kids are instant contributors to their respective teams, and you don't hear much about others as they never develop into the stars they were hyped up to be. The irony in recruiting is how oftentimes guys that didn't get much attention end up being star players and move onto the NFL. The whole concept is a fascinating part of the sport and important to pay attention to.

Ironically, Iowa has done a very poor job with their best recruits. In 2005 Iowa had a top 10 recruiting class that featured a large number of busts. Quarterback Jake Christensen was considered a top 5 QB but was a bust at Iowa and transferred to Eastern Illinois. Tyler Blum, Dan Doering, Kelvin Bailey, and Alex Kanellis were all high level recruits that never lived up to their potential. Dace Richardson and Tony Moeaki were both good players that suffered numerous injuries. As an FCS school Northern Iowa usually gets a lot of leftover recruits without major college offers but they did get a major commitment last week from Andre Dawson (no relation to the baseball player). Dawson is considered the top running back in Iowa and had 11 D-1 scholarship offers from some big schools like Michigan State, Purdue, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, and Minnesota but chose Northern Iowa because his mom has cancer and he wanted to stay close to her. |

Maryland is an attractive school, there is no reason you can't be a top 25 team year in and year out. I've never understood what happened with Friedgen, he got off to such a great start at Maryland.
