Commercial reasons kept women from having prominent roles outside "art house" (God, have I mentioned how I hate this phrase?) and "chick flicks", on the contrary: I think that KK just said "screw marketing!" and decided to take a risk.

Did that extend to having a female M?

Exactly! I think it looks amazing, and will look even better in full motion on the big screen!

As long as it's a great story with memorable characters, who the hell cares what the reasons are? If The Force Awakens turns out to be awesome, are you really going to be hung up on a studio's motives for it's casting decisions? Did it ever occur to you that the studio's reasons might be both creative AND commercial?

Again, your post wreaks of desperately disguised sexism. It sounds to me like you have a genuine issue with females being chosen to play strong roles over males, as if somehow it's unrealistic or unbelievable that a movie should contain strong, impact-making female characters.

Keep telling yourself that. Look through my BD collection, and you will see that I have absolutely no problems with strong female leads. Heck, "Contact", with Jodie Foster is one of my all time favourite movies.

I'd love to see more female Jedi, for instance.

I only have a problem when things are done specifially to reach a larger audience, but I am fully aware it's not an independent production anymore.

It's a legitimate concern. Commercial contrivances could potentially harm a film.

Its just lip service to make them seem socially sensitive. Its like how the sportscar racing got rid of grid girls and the big debate it stirred up. They claimed it was done for social reasons to look good, when in reality they werent needed anymore due to the new start procedure. They would have been axed nomatter what, but they tried to spin it to make them look good.

Im guessing its the same thing here. Did star wars need more nationalities and females? Yes. But there was no need to toot your own horn about it. It just makes you look fraudulent, like you felt forced to add these characters almost as a token.

Potentially, but I don't see anything wrong with an intentional effort to include more female characters within a property. If they say it's to reach a wider audience, that's what it is, but that doesn't have to be perceived as an inherently bad thing.

The wording is pretty crass. If Kennedy hadn't mentioned the audience (which she has an extremely annoying patronizing tendency to do) but instead said that they were organically exploring the female perspective in the Star Wars universe, it'd sound a lot cooler.

Its star wars they could cast mr hankey the christmas poo and put it in the movie and it would make a billion dollars. I wouldnt have any opinions about any of the cast right now simply because well we dont really know what the roles are. We've seen maybe 3:50 of footage for the entire film, hard to judge anything based off that.

I am not sure but I think the ones that love the PT the best are still reeling from the fact that JJ does not like them and decided to take this film in the direction of the OT. Just a hunch on my part but I could be wrong. But you would think that everyone who loves Star Wars would be glad that a new one is coming out.

Alan Ladd, the former FOX CEO who essentially made sure the original Star Wars film ever got made, is also the man we can thank for making the protagonist of ALIEN a woman. Well, not 'making' as such, as it was noted in the script that all the characters could be either sex. But he made the call when given the opportunity and all cinema lovers should be grateful for that decision.

Was that a decision partly motivated by other factors than artistic ones? Commercial ones as well? Sure. Did that harm the integrity of the film in any way in the end? Not at all, quite the contrary I'd say.
