It's because I can get more codes for UV than iTunes, I might as will stick with UV then since I prefer to have access to my movies in a single library. Most of my Vudu collection is just from codes, so if it were not for the codes I probably would not have gone digital for movies.

So what will you do when the codes are no more? Buy from Vudu?

Well I bought from Vudu before, but only on sales, like $4.99, $6.99, and a few $7.99 sales, and I won't pay over $7.99 for a digital movie, whatever the service. The minority of my Vudu collection comes from direct purchases through Vudu. I'm willing to spend more on a blu-ray than a digital copy. If codes are no more, then I will probably just rent digitally or rent from Redbox, and buy the blu-rays for what I want to own.

I'm starting to settle on renting if BluRay/4K BluRay goes away in the next decade. Convinced myself I will be fine with that! 20 years of collecting, going to be tough.

Next decade? There is no chance of that happening. For blockbuster movies physical media is still the big money maker. There will be less and less TV shows and indie movies released on physical media over time but Blu-ray releases for blockbusters aren't going away anytime soon.

Yes, but what are blockbusters these days? Avengers, Captain America BVS, Xmen etc.. Ilove my indies. I also love my tv on Bluray. GOT, TWD, Breaking Bad, AHS, Bates Motel, This is England etc..

What's the point if I can only buy Captain America V Frankenstein or Fast and The Furious 20?

Looking at your collection you have plenty of major releases so its a bit hypocritical to be dismissing them so readily.

I'm certainly concerned about the future of physical media and support indie movies and TV shows wholeheartedly for that reason. But you talked about renting only when physical media isn't an option. I'm not going to switch to supporting digital because physical media isn't an option for many titles, I'll just support the titles that are on physical media.

I'm not going to give in to the studios desire for control because they've already imposed it on certain titles that I'm interested in. The more you give in the more control they'll impose. I would never make plans for what I'll do when and if physical media dies out. I will instead support it as much as I possibly can to delay that from happening.

Oh yes, i do like the big films but i also like pizza. I wouldnt eat it every day though. You and I supporting Bluray isnt going to change anything. Very few of us are collectors let alone quality lovers. I have been through all this before. I am beyond frustrated that people dont care about quality. I am beyond frustrated that people can watch movies on phones. I am beyond frustrated that certain films dont get bluray releases. I am about as hardcore as they come when it comes to bluray.
That doesnt change the fact that services like Netflix and Amazon are making it tough for bluray to make further progress in the market. Many seem to be happy with their subscription services plus the occasional rental of a new movie. That is the new order. Many just dont have the passion we have for the highest quality possible. If the day comes when we cant enjoy our discs what else do you suggest we do? Give up on film altogether?
It saddens me but we have to prepare for that. The only scenario where i wouldnt contunue is if mobile viewing became the only way to watch. As long as that scenario doesnt play out i will seek out every possibility to watch films on a big screen. After all, i still have over 700 movies to fall back on as well.

I will be buying over 60 blurays this year. I consider that great support.

I also prefer to have my digital movies in one library, my Vudu library.

What you need to do is encourage Apple to join UV, the same way they joined DMA. Then you could redeem everything in itunes if you prefer that. UV is just a hub like DMA only with all of the studios, not just one. UV can't make them join.

If that happened, I could very well own a Apple TV...

Customers have been switching over in large number to using streaming services, but that isn't going to make the studios large profits. At absolute most $30 per month per person is split across all the studios. While the studios have been trying to get people to switch to digital for individual movie purchases at $10-$20 they have largely been unsuccessful.

Even though the number of people who are collectors is fairy small those are the people who are spending the highest amount of money. The studios have not been able to convince most collectors to switch to digital.

Overall services like Netflix and Amazon Prime have been terrible for business. Suddenly people who were previously buying movies switched over to paying a total of less than $15 per month. The studios have absolutely no interest in streaming subscription services becoming the only option, that would be a huge amount of lost revenue.

In any case why do you have to prepare for a digital-only future? What preparations that you make now will improve things for you later?

That's pretty strong support (average of 5 per month). So far this year, I've started off slow with my Blu-ray purchasing, but I'm starting to pick up the slack as of this month.

I went a little overboard with my digital purchases lately, neglecting the superior format for the sake of convenience and saving a little money.

This month, I hope to get:
Zootopia 3D (Zootropolis in the UK?)
Anomalisa
Eddie the Eagle UHD
10 Cloverfield Lane
Kung Fu Panda 3

All on disc. There's my 5. Heh

I know this already.

What can I do to prepare? Try to adapt to lesser quality for a start. I hope I don't have to but you never know.

Step it up!

Anomalisa is a great movie. Enjoyed 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Personally, I am getting some Camera Obscura titles and I have my eye (no pun intended) on a few Artificial Eye.

Read the 'Vudu free with ads' thread for another bloody good reason not to go Digital.

You're arguing that the possibility of free rentals with ads on Vudu is bad how? That's another option, not something that is being forced on anyone. This hasn't gone live yet, but it's intriguing.

I can't see it catching on too much. How could ads alone make up for people not paying to rent it? Strange idea. Maybe they just want to get people's attention and the companies running the ads are willing to pay more than the renters during this experiment. Hmm.

It still has no effect on those who buy digital. It can just help renters save money and deter people from pirating perhaps?

Nah, it's a really bad idea. This crap should never be introduced. If we want adverts we watch cable or broadcast. If I switch to a rental model if disc dies, th last thing I want is adverts in my ******* rentals. It's bad enough getting lesser quality.

What's to stop them inserting ads every fifteen minutes like cable? It will be a return to the Stone Age.

But people are "cutting the cord" when it comes to cable these days. Maybe that is impacting several different parties and this is just one way of adapting to the new digital environment.

Like I said, it's for renters, not purchasers. Giving people free rentals with ads doesn't impose anything on the people who would rather purchase or rent ad-free for a fee.

It is just an option that is all. Crackle has been doing free movies with advertisements for years.
