Samardzija was smart to go pro in baseball. The Cubs offered him $10 million guaranteed, which was more than he was going to get in the NFL. White receivers definitely face an uphill battle and he would have had a lot more injury risk. I could see him trying to play football soon though. He hasn't been good when he's gotten called up to the bigs and him and the Cubs could agree to end the contract after the season.

When was the last time a white receiver was a top 10 pick? He was projected to go late first round, but would have risked injury if he played another year in college plus his contract would probably have been around 4 years/$10 million with $5 million guaranteed.

I don't know how Garrett didn't get fired last year when the OJ Mayo scandal broke (in addition to the ongoing Bush investigation), but there was no way he was keeping his job after the NCAA sanctions. He was a textbook example of "lack of institutional control." As long as the football and basketball teams were winning he'd look the other way. Everyone knew that Mayo's recruitment had a lot of question marks but he didn't care. With a new school president starting this month he had to know his days were numbered.

In a bit of a surprise, Kyle Parker will return as Clemson's starting quarterback this season. Parker was drafted by the Rockies with their first round pick and was expected to sign a deal with them and give up his football career. Parker has until August 15 to sign with the Rockies or else he will re-enter the baseball draft next season, but he has ruled out a baseball only contract.

Georgia is the latest school the NCAA is looking into for possible rules violations. They are the 4th SEC team the NCAA is currently investigating, along with Florida, South Carolina, and Alabama, as well as North Carolina. Apparently the Georgia investigation is whether receiver A.J. Green attended an agent's Memorial Day party, and if so whether he received improper benefits. This is the same party that South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama may have had players at. Green denies going to the party and said he spent Memorial Day at his home in South Carolina.

Getting out of hand. NCAA needs to do something about this. Kids should know better, certainly, but so should the agents. Agents need to be penalized somehow.
Hopefully Green didn't go to that party (though I really don't care if he did). But if he did go, then lied about not going to the coaches, he's going to be in deep shit and rightfully so. |

Didn't 3 or 4 football players a few yrs back have jobs at a car dealership that paid them $1000/wk and required nothing of them. ![]() Zero access is the only thing that coaches can control so Saban went there, and good for him. It sounds like the NFLPA is taking this whole thing seriously, so we'll have to see what shakes out. College is an unpaid feeder for the pro's and EVERYONE has a vested interest in not letting agents screw it up. |

It's the NFL and NFLPA that need to do something about agents contacting college players because the NCAA is powerless to punish the agents, and in large part the players, because all they can do is suspend them, and in the end it's the school that is punished (USC). The NFL and NFLPA should work together and make stiff penalties for agents that are using runners to get players by any means necessary. Make some serious penalties like an automatic lifetime ban and this stuff will largely stop, although there will still be boosters giving gifts to the players.

That was at Oklahoma with QB Rhett Bomar and guard DJ Quinn, both of whom were kicked off the team. Romar was one of the top quarterback prospects in the country but had trouble finding a school that would take him (I know for a fact Northern Iowa turned him down, as did some other top-tier FCS programs) and he ended up at Sam Houston State and was a 5th round pick of the Giants in 2009. He was on the practice squad last year and is battling for a roster spot this year.

But as with most things there are always exceptions, no matter how great you are as a student lets say you're in law school some firm isn't going to chase you around throwing money at you and hiring women to hook up with you, throwing parties to get you to come, or giving the folks a place to live and a car to drive. Not everyone has the same willpower and I know at least for me no matter how much I was given scholarship wise if some hottie was coming to me every day calling me trying to hook up guess what it'll eventually happen ![]() There will always be choices and decisions on right and wrong in college, but something like agents hounding players shouldn't even be in the equation, at least from my perspective. |
