The RC-10 is a wonderful speaker, no question. Having owned a pair myself for a few years, I can attest to the quality of their imaging and depth. However, for surround use, I would only consider using them as surround backs in a 7.1 setup (direct radiating), rather than as side surrounds in a 7.1 setup or as the only rears in a 5.1 setup. For that would I highly recommend going with the RC-R's.

I say that confidently for a few reasons. First, the addition of mid-ranges to both sides of the speaker introduces superior fullness and natural warmth to the rear sound field. The sheer variety of settings (bipole, dipole, direct, output control) and numerous placement options (on-wall, on a shelf, in tight places, etc.) make them far more versatile for any environment. They're priced comparably to the RC-10's ($400 or less for a pair, though you could probably find the RC-10's a little cheaper) and are half the weight (14 lbs vs 28 lbs). And the use of foam port plugs is a non-issue if you're wall mounting, so the sound quality isn't diminished in any way.

For my money, I would choose the RC-R's any day.

(Hopefully that didn't sound too much like a commercial...)
I agree with you but that does not make them a bad surround speaker if your room allows an easy speaker placement and yes RC-R is way better surround speaker but the price difference sometimes makes you go mmm! maybe if I wait a little longer for the rc-r to go down and get the rc-10 in a 5.1 for now I can pull off a 7.1 with the rc-10 as back surrounds and RC-R as surrounds later.

I don't know RC-R in Canada are far more expensive right now as no more rc-10 are available, rc-10 was selling for 199$ a pair in liquidation and now the rc-r is still 399$ a Pop. In this case the RC-10 would be a no brainer until the RC-R. goes down in price.

I intent to do this anyways with my c-r100 now I use them as back surround for wider sound field because they're close to the couch but as soon as I have the room yes I swing those puppies as surround and c-100 as back surround.

I can get the RCR for $25 more than the rc10, so the rcr is a better overall surround?

Odd

Did you have the little plate connecting the top and bottom binding posts together? I would think so since your woofer don't respond but tweeters are and you are connected at the bottom.

What receiver do you have again?
What X-over point are you using on your receiver?

Wow, $399 each? That's insane.

The RC-10 will sound good as a surround, no doubt about it. Having heard both the RC-10 and the RC-R, I prefer the RC-R way more. But if the RC-10 price is that low, I would do that too. I know your system must sound great BigAl! I always appreciate your input and comments.

your owners manual should tell you what binding post they prefer you to use, MAKE SURE you DO NOT REMOVE THE BRIDGE between the BINDING POST.

you only want to remove the bridge if you are going to bi-wire or bi-amp.

If you look in your pioneer elite owner's manual they will tell you how to set you crossover if it's defaulted to 120hz you will lose some of the lower frequencies.

That was going to be my question. Make sure that plate (shorting strap) stays in place. It could damage your speakers if you take them off and try to connect them normally. You should only remove them if you are bi-wiring.

Your Pioneer Elite is nice! I can't wait for you to hear them with the RC-50's. It's gonna rock!

Give them a couple months before they change the whole line and they will be something like 149$ a pop and last floor models 99$ (below cost)

If they get that cheap I'll buy two more and make all four of my surrounds RC-R's. I'll just have to wait for a way to mount them as surround backs.

Well not sure they will ship to the US and the other thing is here Futureshop as soon as they liquidate speakers they literally fly off the shelves.

You have to spend your life in store or online but hey I have no life .

The nice C-100 that I paid 99$ went as low as 79$ a pair brand new in the box online only with like 22.95$ shipping fee from Canada post.

That was a steal!!!!

I can usually find them on eBay or some other places. The nice thing is, if what you say is true, places like Vann's and World Wide Stereo should have them cheap as well.
