There are SO many people here who are fortunate that I'm not a mod.

Wait...What??? Catherine Deneuve is there in one of the movies???
Seriously??? I absolutely adore her...

I was actually inclined towards Tati set because I feel I am more familiar with what to expect...However since criterion is discontinuing blu+DVD sets...I am also thinking of getting the Demy one...it may not last till July sale (separate blu & DVD version may come out though)...

Get the Demy set. Seriously. I blind-bought the set at the beginning of the B&N sale and I enjoyed each film, and two of the films--The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort--have become two of my favorite films. And, Deneuve is in three of the films: Umbrellas, Rochefort, and Donkey Skin.

I, too, haven't seen the other sets, but you really can't go wrong with the Demy set. You really can't.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (one of the top five movies ever, IMO)

The Young Girls of Rochefort (brilliant)

Donkey Skin (oh yeah!)

Should be a fun trip.

ETA: Looks, like I was Ninja'd by Namuhana But you get the point. Heh.

Make Way for Tomorrow and Tokyo Story. Those sappy family dramas get to me every time.

It is also the most enlightening. I have never understood the Holocaust on any level ... how hate and prejudice could play out on such an epic and barbarous scale; Shoah comes the closest of any book, film, or other vehicle to explaining how madness swept an entire country, then proceeded to infect a continent and the entire world.

I tried for years to see it, having read several reviews that called it "the most important film ever made about the Holocaust" (Scheuer among them), but it was never accessible. I was sorely disappointed when it was restored and released back into theatres in 2010 for a limited run; it did not screen anywhere in Texas where I was living at the time. When I found out that Criterion had acquired it, I was ecstatic. I had managed to see a bootlegged, imported DVD in 2011; when the Criterion release debuted in June of 2013, I went to Barnes and Noble in Arkansas to buy it, and they told me to wait a week for the 50% off sale. I did, and it became not only the cornerstone of my Criterion Collection, but the beginning of my relationship with Barnes and Noble ...
I wanted to give a thanks to your post but I ran out of them (because I was "liking"/"thanking" people who responded to my initial post on 5 least favorite blind-buys). In any case, I've had this Shoah box set sitting in my cabinet for over a year or two and I have yet to try and tackle this thing. I'm just wondering how on earth this can be screened in a theater if its 10 hours long? Was there a shortened or abridged version?

I hear you. I've probably seen It's a Wonderful Life about the same number of times as you have over the years. Every year I tell myself that I'm not going to let it get to me and every year without fail, by the time Clarence gets his wings, I'm a puddle.

Little wonder the army chose Capra to make propaganda movies during WWII. Resistance is futile.

I wanted to add, in agreement with Great Owl, that A Safe Place may be one of the least watchable films in my Criterion Collection. I forgot about that one, because its in a box set that I highly admire, showcasing some great early indie American cinema from the late 1960s.

It's Petzold's Phoenix, one of the year's very best. Stoked for this.
