For some reason this made me think of The Santa Clause 2 when they made the copy of Santa who was made of plastic and went crazy.

And now I have this image of a plastic-looking George Lucas running around the set of the Star Wars PT saying crazy things.

And that's the problem with your point. It requires context and hindsight. Lucas had neither when he chose to ignore naysayers both in 1977 and in 1999.

Nothing's compared to the (2011 Lucas) that one was born out of the bickering of the fans.

So what does an artist do when a few people are saying something about the movie is bad, and then some people are saying "no, I like it. Leave it"? The artist still has to make their own decision about it because, in reality, everyone has an opinion about everything.

That is something that must be learned, young padawan.

Common sense, for one. You always find people who dislike certain things for very specific reasons. There might be somebody out there who hates Star Wars because it's scientifically inaccurate, with sounds and fire in space. But, the movie was made that way on purpose, as a fantasy experience, not as hard sci-fi, so nitpicking about that detail is fruitless (especially since casual audiences won't care if the experience and story is so good).

It gets ridiculous when people complain about something just because it doesn't align with their personal perception of how something should be. I realize I might be coming off this way, but I have no complaint about Star Wars being what it is; all I'm arguing for is that Jar Jar is hated by so many viewers, would it have killed Lucas to tone him down, or rewrite him, or something?

It also doesn't hurt to get a second or third opinion about things. But to get none at all hurts more than it helps.

True, there will always be haters and artists will just have to brush them off. You're right, every artist has to make a decision, but at least some collaboration and feedback helps refine their work. It doesn't sound like Lucas had any such refinement at all with the PT scripts, and it sticks out to me the more I watch the movies. I just wonder how improved the movies would have been if there was some more fine-tuning of the script; it could have made a difference between movies that are fun but critically divisive, or movies that are universally-loved.

As it is, you're making the argument that the man's above reproach because he's successful and an expert in his field. If everything he does is so perfect, why doesn't everybody love the PT, or the changes he made to the OT?

Here's some tied together speculations about Maz Kanata, the CG character played by Lupita Nyong'o:

[Show spoiler]There's some debate as to whether we're looking at a "pub" a "castle", or a "pirate lair", etc..

Uh, I didn't say anything about Lucas having or not having context or hindsight in 1977 or 1999.

What I was saying is that you can't compare Lucas/Coppola regarding Wars IV in 1977 and Lucas/collaborators regarding Wars I in 1999. The context of the two scenarios is different. I said nothing at all about hindsight.

Sorry, my friend, it's not as simple as that. What is good or bad is a matter of opinion and not something that can be learned. What appeals to another, no matter how good of an idea, may simply not appeal to you. And if you're an artist, you're going to reject (or accept) ideas/advice/ based largely on your own ideology.

And therein lies my point! So, did Lucas REALLY reject feedback about Jar Jar and Phantom Menace because of some massively large ego as many on these boards like to claim? Or did he reject it simply because it didn't align with how he thought it should be?

And we don't know if he didn't. But as I already pointed out, the second or third opinion might have been favorable. So then he would've had to weigh the opinions and make decisions from there. We have no way of knowing just how many people chimed in with negative or positive feedback. Therefore we certainly have no way of knowing arrived at his final decisions.

Actually, that's not my argument at all. I'm not in any way suggesting Jar Jar was a good idea or well executed, or that the Phantom Menace is a good movie. My point is, and I thought I was being very clear about this, sometimes you ignore advice because, as you said, it doesn't align with how you think something should be...and it turns out to be a phenomenal success. And then sometimes you ignore advice because it doesn't align with how you think something should be...and it turns out to be not such a good decision. That doesn't mean the latter was a product of a massive ego the way people like to keep claiming.

Okay, that's all I have to say on the matter as I clearly helped derail this thread long enough. I appreciate you keeping it civil and friendly!

Interesting menu, but A Darth Vader mini cupcake just doesn't sound politically correct to me.

Why no Pizza the Hutt? Oh wait, that's Space Balls.

Anyone in the media talked to George Lucas yet? I'm really curious on what he has to say about the new trailer.
