Will blind buy A Brighter Summer Day for sure just based on how much I liked Yi Yi, the supplements sound great, 2 hour documentary and videotaped play, also a 4 hour commentary track?

Still need to wait for the review of Manchurian Candidate to see if it is worth an upgrade for me.

What do you mean by notable? Do you mean great direction, performances, etc,?

FWIW, A Brighter Summer Day is considered by many asian film critics to be one of the greatest and most influential Taiwanese films ever made.

It's a film that covers a lot of historical, political, and social ground that many might find educational.

I've read that it contains performances by over 100 non-actors. That certainly piqued my curiosity.

I try and try to whittle down my collection and then announcements like this come along. Screw the whittling. Just take my money.

So only Boyhood was missing from the announcement based on the phantom pages, I wonder if that is what the dalay was about, and at the end it wasn't ready for some reason.

Also weird that on the Manchurian Candidate page, the cast only shows the director, since there were no phantom pages for the actors.

Criterion's 2016 release slate is turning out to be pretty stellar. I'm especially loving all the titles that aren't already readily available - like I Knew Her Well, The Emigrants/The New Land, and Death by Hanging.

A Brighter Summer Day is the real treasure this month - a great film without a single quality home video release anywhere in the world.

For those who care about such things - and if it gives you any extra motivation to try it out - A Brighter Summer Day ranks in the top 100 on the "They Shoot Pictures, Don't They" list and the most recent "Sight and Sound" list. It's probably one of the "biggest" films never to get a proper release.

So, I'm willing to bet the two day delay was because Richard Linklater doesn't check his email.

That documentary sounds amazing. Taiwanese New Wave cinema is incredible, but to get not only the 3 godfathers of that cinema (Yang, Hou, Tsai), but 3 phenomenal ones as well, talking about their country's cinema is just amazing. Criterion went all out for this release, when they could've just put out the film only and we would have been ecstatic!

Also, check out Yang's The Terrorizers if you get a chance!

I believe the two main child actors in Yi Yi were non-actors when they starred in it.

ANYWAY, what a tremendous announcement.

Bicycle Thieves - No-brainer. This is a must buy. Glad I hadn't gotten around to ordering the Arrow edition.

A Poem Is a Naked Person - I've only seen one or two Les Blank films so far. I am very interested in seeing this, though I am not sure it's a buy for me.

A Brighter Summer Day - Sounds incredible! I can't wait!

The Manchurian Candidate - I've only seen the remake, and am very interested to see this version!

Paris Belongs to Us - Again, this sounds excellent.

I haven't seen any of them, but 4 out of 5 are probably buys from me!

Seems like the only thing I want in 2016 from CC is Lady Snowblood.

The original 1962 version of The Manchurian Candidate is definitely a must-see. It's an intriguing thriller, brilliantly played by an excellent cast, especially by Angela Lansbury who is absolutely phenomenal in what I consider to be the best role of her distinguished career. She was named Best Supporting Actress by the National Board of Review and also won the Golden Globe; I think her Honorary Oscar in 2013 was largely attributable to her unforgettable work in this film. Remember when you finally watch it that she was only three years older in real life than actor Laurence Harvey, who plays her son!

Finally, A Brighter Summer Day is getting a release after years of teasing. This is huge, not only for people like me who want to see more Yang, but for anyone in general that have been wanting to see that OOP title that's listed on the Sight and Sound poll. It's finally happening. Day one purchase.

What a stacked month. I want every title, save for maybe the Blank.

So far, the sure things for me are:

Inside Llewyn Davis
Gilda
Bitter Rice (this may not be a "sure" thing, but I'm definitely leaning toward getting it)
I Knew Her Well
Paris Belongs To Us
Bicycle Thieves

Ouch.
