Kinda fitting how they worked in some of Zeppelin's Kashmir into the trailer's music.

Nice touch.

Escapist fun? Definitely... I wasn't going in expecting the greatest film of all time but my expectations were met. Turd is not what I would have gone for.

To be honest, Andrew Stanton and his enthusiasm is the biggest reason I even keep following this, since every trailer or image from the movie seems to be making it into another Prince of Persia, which probably isn't a good thing. I hope Disney is really just using false advertising on this one. They're not exactly strangers to it.
1) Avatar was great escapism and a technical marvel

2) I'm going to tell you and Moviefan right now that you might as well move on imo...

This film is definitely not meant for you because
a) the original novel is -pulp- fiction. It was meant to be basic entertainment for the masses. I think this movie will have the exact same goal, and that shouldn't be a problem.
b) the movie seems to follow directly in the shoes of Star Wars, Prince of Persia and Avatar (wonder if the blue paint on JC is meant as a tribute to Avatar), which you seem to have a problem with (to speak politely)

Why? Is this thread only for people that want to see this film? I can't speak for KubrickFan, but I love good science fiction. This obviously does not appear like it will fit that description. Avatar while impressive in technical areas simply wasn't that good of a film. Was it average? Probably so, but it was done so much better when it was Dances With Wolves. I had high hopes for this project because the premise sounded interesting, and I think Taylor Kitsch is a big star of the future. But in my eyes, that trailer pretty much killed any interest I had in this project. I'll still give it a shot as I'm a firm believer in giving chances, but my hopes are pretty low at this point. I just wish it didn't have such a campy look to it, I was hoping for more adult minded science fiction.

Did you read the books? Very campy. The original stories are a fun read but there is nothing mature about it.

The movie looks like it's directed by the computer programmers that made Star Wars: The Attack of the Clones.

Oh far from me the idea to tell you and KubrickFan what to do, but to me it is clear that you are setting yourselves up for a big letdown if you expect anything other than a Star Wars (prequel) or Avatar type movie (at best, in fact, I would say).
It would just be nice for once to avoid the "I hate this film, this film is the worse I have ever seen. I knew it would be like that." - " Then why are you even in this thread? What did you expect?" discussions once it releases, that is all.

Specially when we can tell that it -is- going to happen with your tastes.

I don't think I've ever read anything by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and I haven't the faintest idea what this movie will be about - but, what the heck, how many science fiction movies are released in March? I'll be there.

Uh, one a year, usually, unless you're counting SFX fantasy.

(Plus one cult-comic title, one YA bestseller franchise, one or two cult-director pieces if Zack Snyder isn't doing anything that year, and a gothy fairytale with at least one Twilight veteran in it, for the fangirl audience.
And at least the big-budget sci-fi movie has the big studio behind it, before they have to clear out for the Easter CGI kiddy movies....Welcome to Spring Break, known in Hollywood as Geek-Week.)

Boom. Out go the lights.
I was wondering the same thing, I'd reckon that it would turn a lot of people around. However, I guess they're scared this will look like a Kids movie instead of a Family movie.

My thoughts exactly...

Can't really have this

With the words "By the creator of Finding Nemo and Wall-E".

Although I'd love to see that kind of poster by Disney, that'd be the day hehe

I honestly think the movie looks incredible. Love the books, and the movie looks like it's got the pulpy fun of series that Edgar Rice Burroughs was going for. I have a feeling though, it really isn't going to do well over here in the states, but will do really well over seas...Unless word of mouth is incredible and convinces people to go.

Ive never read the books but I think this movie definutely has potential. Finding Nemo and Walle are both very good animated movies and I like it when Pixars great minds move to live action

Agreed. I think it was interesting because people were really worried about all the reshoots that Andrew Stanton did. But his reasoning behind it was the fact that at Pixar, they construct and deconstruct their movies three or four times before it's released, so they release the best possible movie. So that's what he did with John Carter. He wanted it to be the best possible movie, so he took what he learned and Pixar and did it here. If only more director's did things like that...I like that he stuck to his quality control. I think the movie is going to turn out great.

Agreed. The most recent trailer looks far more epic in scope than what I expected with the first teasers.
Funny thing is ... knowing "of" the books but having never read them, I was expecting them to do a big mix of the John Carter stories, but according to what I've read, it looks like a relatively honest adaptation of the first volume ( "A Princess of Mars") ever released (1911). This predates Tolkien's Hobbit by 26 years, and what is considered to be the first published example of Sword and Sorcery (Howard's Solomon Kane - you know, the guy who invented Conan in 1931) by 17 years.
Even if Flash Gordon is probably a more accurate comparison, it still predates it by about 23 years (FG debuted in 1934).
