If Conan does go to another network, they had better put him on at 12:30, or else he's going to get beat almost nightly by Letterman and Leno.

Foxnews.com is reporting that Conan is leaving NBC and that a show on Fox is a possibility. Money is not likely to be a factor in his decision. He is due $20 million per year from NBC for the next 4 years, and any money he makes from another network would cut down on what he's owed from NBC, so if he took $8 million from Fox he's still get another $12 million from NBC for the next 4 years. Conan could choose to take a year or two off as well, get paid by NBC, and then launch a new show.

EDIT: Anybody have any information as to if NBC owns the rights to Conan's characters? Last edited by Mike53421; 01-11-2010 at 03:03 PM. |

Even if another network is in a position to lure him and his crew, there's no assurance that dealing with their execs will be substantially better, or things will be any rosier if Conan fails to pull in the numbers that they were hoping for. As you said, people are an impatient bunch, and unless there are guaranteed compensation clauses in his contract, FOX (or whomever brings him onboard) could pull a move similar to NBC's.

I think NBC is making a huge mistake trying to salvage Leno. While Conan might not be pulling the Tonight Show numbers they need today, he likely will going forward.
Even if Leno bounces the Tonight Show back - how many more years will he stay? Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daly certainly aren't ready to headline the Tonight show. Bringing Leno back to it would be almost as shortsighted as creating the 10pm Leno block in the first place. They should have the balls to cut him loose and build back their prime time, leaving late night exactly as it is. |

Lmao, pure comedy right here.
1) Nbc will put reality tv back in place of Leno's time slot. So much for original tv shows. 2) Jerry Seinfeld defends nbc network and put entire blame on Conan O'Brian for his low ratings. To put it kindly, Jerry is saying Conan sucks major donkey ballz, All reported tonight on nightly news by my local affiliate. Disclaimer: I like Conan. |

So I went to the living room and my Mom was watching so I popped in to see cause it's been awhile. I get it. He was giving out awards and made a crack about the award for the only blond Tiger didn't sleep with (Andy) and she didn't know who he was. Then he made a crack about an NBC exec and it went to the guy who would ride the kayak on Late Night dressed as a total slob, she laughed but didn't get the reference. So in almost 2 minutes of watching with my Mom the generation gap in Conan's humour is apparent compared to Leno, hmmm.

Okay, shall we count the screw ups involved in this debacle?
1) Forcing Leno to retire to keep Conan - this was a screw-up in hindsight. At the time, it looked semi-brilliant. Conan owned 12:30 but since by 2009, Ferguson had cut seriously into his lead, making the move less brilliant. 2) Giving Leno 10pm to keep him in the fold. Both of these moves have been made of fear. Fear of letting what they see as a commodity go to a competitor. Shades of 1992, when NBC was so paralyzed by fear that either Leno or Letterman would bolt, that couldn't seem to make a decision. 3) Leno just doing a version of his 11:30 show at 10pm. Given the chance to do something new and fresh, he punted. 4) NBC panicking and trying once again to have it's cake and eat it too: Leno at 11:30, Conan at Midnight and Fallon at 1. Again, NBC is so afraid of anyone getting away that they manage to make the stupidest decision possible. We have no idea how Conan would have done, on his own, as host of the Tonight Show. If you can't hang on to 10pm, then no one stays around to watch the 11 O'clock news and if no one watches the news, they sure don't stay for the Tonight Show. NBC was so afraid of Leno going off and possibly competing with Conan that they let him stay and do it on their own network. He competes for guests and sabotaged Conan's lead-in. Seriously, the actions of NBC in this regard have been so brain dead that I hope the network's initials stand for "Never Breed Children." |

The main issues seem to stem from NBC wanting to continue their experiment but the affiliates threatening them back.
It's all because they were losing local viewership leading into their respective evening/morning news. Had they not put Leno on at 10pm things could have been different but we will never know for sure. |
