exactly!!!! i mean come on here, its a power cord for a home theater man. wasnt asking for a logical or illogical reason behind power cords.

lou hit the nail on the head with this statement, thanks lou

Good morning Ryan,

That's exactly what you should do.

However, I do hope that you read through some of the posts made by "freaks"! I certainly wouldn't categorize solarrdadd as one such person. In fact, I respect his opinions a great deal. Although the posts may have gone off-course from the original intent of your thread, I definitely learnt something and for that I'm grateful. I hope you did as well.

Just wanted to provide this as some food for thought.

John

nope, no ill will towards anyone. just didnt expect this as i have never discussed this before and was blown away by all the mumbo jumbo and how it went off coarse. i had some here that helped me and i guess that was good enough for me.

solarrdadd is great here and i respect him as well, infact he has helped me in other threads with his opinions and suggestions. no problem with him at all.

That blackening can be due to high current and lower (but excessive) resistance. Or low current through higher resistance. Or a third category - arcing. In all cases, energy (and burning) is a function of current.

Same current would also be in the other 'neutral' wire. But the neutral connection did not dissipate energy while conducting that same current. Same current says the hot prong had excessive resistance - the neutral did not. Why did the 'hot' have excessive resistance whereas the neutral did not?

One way blackening could occur is if the plug was not fully seated. But then blackening would not be at the base of that yellow plug. The plug apparently was fully seated. Resistance (or an arcing gap) was between that prong and the internal receptacle contact.

Properly noted is a problem common with 'back stab' connections. (An electrical connection that should never exist on circuits that power computers.) Again, not relevant here. Burning is in the wrong location.

Regardless of NEMA 15R, some receptacles (not just hospital type) have receptacle contacts that are superior. Exceed NEMA requirements - rated for more reconnects. And typically sold in the same Lowes or Home Depot for more money. This receptacle demonstrates what happens when a minimal contact is insufficient (ie contact pressure on the plug prong is weak).

I never said there weren't, I stated that i stated the nomenclature NEMA would use to the device rated for said purposes by NEMA. yes, there are other receptacles that exceed said pressure but there is no NEMA designation for them. NEMA much like the NEC gives the minimum requirements. could you use #10awg for a 20a circuit yes you can and at times you must but you may also use the smaller #12awg for that same 20a circuit unless those "times" i mentioned exist then you may not.

His tirade implied a dedicated 20 amp circuit or line conditioner would avert or create this problem. He does not say with clarity. That blackening is consistent with excessive energy dissipated as defined by the famous "I squared R" relationship. A combination of higher current and higher resistance. Both must exist to create that damage. Same current also flowing through the neutral connection caused no damage. Only the hot wire contact was defective on that 15 amp receptacle.

I implied nothing, i simply stated what I used to get power up to my HT setup read it again.

So, howwould a dedicated circuit or line conditioner changed that picture - as his outburst implied?
first, what outburst, please curb or govern your passions or they will be your undoing. Nothing will prevent that damage if enough resistance or impedance exist on a circuit when energy is being consumed or "called for" and I never said either would prevent such damage, again, I simply stated what I use to get power up to my HT setup.

In your haste to try to make yourself look good and others look bad you are making yourself look bad while trying to do good. stop trying to talk over or down to folks your doing it intentionally or unintentionally. if this is how all your other post have gone on this forum, i can see why you haven't made any "friends" on your profile page. we come together as friends and kindred spirits to share our common passion for HT & blu-ray, not to weild a so called stick stick over others. it takes a big person to let something go as well you should. this post has really been brought down with your inputs and stabs at everyone.

everyone, please let's try to move forward, this will get us nowhere. let's put this one to rest so we can move on.

everyone else, lets either answer the OP question or do nothing or this particular tangent will go on forever! Oh to ensure we can make that happen, "Wescom, you are right and we are all wrong", better? now let's get back to being a happy loving community!

Please & Thank You!

Ryan,

Glad you got the power cord coming. Looking forward to your opinion.

As far as the term "freaks," it has a negative connotation. I think "geeks" would be better received. Or just saying the discussion got too technical to be helpful (to you) and very off-topic and made no sense at times.

Others may come to this thread and have an ah-ha moment and just decide to sell their gear. At that time, people who want them can get them for a bargain.

So, thanks, Ryan, for starting this thread. And thanks to all the others who contributed to this roller coaster of emotional and knowledgeable of responses.

I think Ryan got out of it what he wanted and others got what they wanted. On that note, if a mod wants to close this thread, that would be fine. I do not think there could be anything more to add to this discussion.

I hope everyone has a great day. Get out and get some Vitamin D.

Solarrdadd, thanks for your input on this, I think everyone here is glad that you provided both some great information on circuits and some much needed sanity to this thread.
OP, don't give up, there are plenty of us waiting patiently to hear about your new power cord when you get a chance to try it out.

You can plug into your APC or a wall outlet. Check the manual of your AVR or Power Amp first, as some say to plug it into a wall outlet only. If no mention is made, you'll be fine either way.

What parameters 'measure' that power cord's quality?

Meanwhile, neither a line conditioner nor dedicated circuit would have averted that blackening plug and receptacle. No respoonse on that question from others confirms and terminates that other discussion.
