Not sure I need to re watch this again. It's kinda like the Blair Witch project. Once you've seen it's an obvious fake the magic is gone.

So wait, when you first watched this and BWP, you actually thought it was real found footage? Just kidding, I know you didn't, but I don't really understand what the big difference is in suspending your disbelief for a found-footage film compared to any other type of fictional film. It's like saying CLOVERFIELD can only be watched once because it's 'fake', but stuff like GODZILLA can be watched over and over because it's real?

I've met the guy, read his interviews, seen his films and sold him dvds (I sold him the EC Ultrabit release of Cannibal Holocaust for example, so we spoke about this stuff) . Eli Roth is a waste of space.

I hope he does explain how they used real cannibals, 'cause he was very sure of himself in a tv interview that I saw.
When Cabin Fever was released, I thought he might be the next John Carpenter or Wes Craven. Unfortunately, everything he's directed after that has been garbage (in my opinion). To go from an awesome original idea like Cabin Fever to a Saw rip-off like Hostel boggles my mind.

I think Ti West might have a shot at being a top director in the horror genre, if given the chance.

For some reason this post sitting aside your avatar cracked me all the hell up, haha.

Isn't the "cruelty-free" version the same as Deodato's now-preferred cut? Admittedly I didn't even know Deodato had a newer edit, I just assumed there were the two versions.

As much as I like this movie and Diabolik, I don't wanna preorder from them. Funds are low, and I dislike that Diabolik doesn't allow the canceling of preorders. If I see it cheap from ImportCDs or someplace, I'll get it there. I can only do what my wallet allows.

I've never seen the Grindhouse cruelty-free version, but I thought all the animal scenes were cut from that version. The Deodato edit retains some of the animal violence but has the most notorious scenes either completely cut or altered with fake damaged film, etc. I believe that version was new and exclusive to the Shameless version and is not on this Grindhouse release.

You can stop wondering who the real cannibals are -- Grindhouse Releasing are answering all your questions with their hi-def issue of Ruggero Deodato's CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980)! When an award-winning news crew goes missing deep in the jungles of the Amazon, a college professor heads up a rescue team to retrace their steps and hopefully bring them back alive. However, they're immediately met with hostility from the indigenous tribes and are able to return only with some of the original reels of footage. Upon reviewing the developed film, the reporters' story unfolds, and it seems their smiling facades hid the depraved depths they would gleefully plumb for the sake of sensationalism. The cameras record it all -- right down to the last frame of gut-spilling, flesh-ripping retribution.

A vicious (if somewhat hypocritical) condemnation of the news media, Deodato's film remains a powerful, troubling experience -- perhaps even more relevant today than when it was made. It's also the granddaddy of the "found footage" genre; the handheld first person sections on display are startlingly effective and difficult to watch. A surefire inclusion on any of those "Most Disturbing Films" lists you see pop up, it's a hard film to recommend as it's full of sexual violations, gory dismemberments, animal mutilations and every form of unpleasantness you can think of, but it's also extremely well made, continuously compelling, and, ultimately, necessary.

Upgrading their DVD from almost a decade ago, Grindhouse look to replicate the relevant extras from that prior release while adding a plethora of new interviews, another commentary and more. You'll get input from director Deodato, stars Robert Kerman, Carl Yorke and Francesca Ciardi, composer Riz Ortolani and others -- as an added bonus, they're also including a soundtrack CD of Ortolani's memorable score, remastered from the original studio tapes! (And, most importantly, the featurette we shot at the re-release premiere will be included, too!) All in all, it appears to be the definitive package, in the typical Grindhouse Releasing tradition. "The one that goes all the way!"

Theatrical Trailer! (Not particularly safe for work.)

Sometimes overlooked because everyone focuses on the graphic nature and elements of the film, but a lot of the film's power comes from the juxtoposition of all the horror on-screen with Riz Ortolani's beautiful and somewhat haunting music score. Ortolani, of course, hit it huge early in his career with the amazing song "More" in his MONDO CANE score which was nominated for the Oscar, and which led to a lifetime career of great film music. Sadly, he died earlier this year.

So even if you don't like horror, the opening credits to CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (below) featuring Ortolani's opening theme are very safe viewing, and actually quite beautiful, and shows that this wasn't the usual exploitation film. Ortolani's excellent score really deserves a lot of credit for this film's longevity.

No Human is a waste a space! That is just harsh. But I guess we are all entitled to our opinions.

Worthy point, Ortolani's score is indeed pivotal to the movie. Indeed a fine piece of work.

Ah, OK. Sounds interesting. I haven't watched it, but the cruelty-free version should just be a seamless-branched version omitting the segments of animal violence. Deodato's new edit would be interesting to see, particularly for times when I wanna watch the movie but don't really feel like stomaching a turtle's innards being pulled apart, lol.

The music of the movie is definitely great. I'm glad this set comes with a soundtrack CD. Something I wish more deluxe packages came with in regard to movies like this with really memorable scores.

Yeah, I was kinda hoping that wouldn't be the art. I can't totally explain it, maybe it's just the style. It's still pretty good though. Thanks for posting.

Anyway, more excited for the actual release. Ever since I first found out about this movie 6 or 7 years ago I've wanted to see it, but I thought I was too young and not ready, and the limited edition DVD that I wanted has been really expensive. But the wait paid off! I'd get this thing even at $40 honestly cause I have this "history" with it and I've anticipated it for so long. But luckily by release date it'll go down to like $30, probably even lower, so even better. I'm sure this'll be a fantastic release, knowing Grindhouse Releasing. Hopefully they get like 4 other releases at least out by the end of the year. I want one of them to be Pieces but I don't see that happening with the slate mentioned by Akijama.

Edit: And the CD is a nice surprise. Glad they added that as I've heard the score is amazing.

I hold Grindhouse Releasing in the highest esteem, but if you've never seen Cannibal Holocaust (and you've allowed "hype" to build over 7 years), my friendly advice is to temper your expectations. I'm one person, but this film remains to be an indescribable disappointment to me (I first saw it in the late 90's). Paradoxically, I'll buy the blu-ray from GR.

I'm the opposite really. I went in expecting a really shit cannibal movie relying on extreme shock tactics, and came out having seen a very well made convincing movie that I thouroughly enjoyed.

I personally reccomend it, but don't hype it up too much as a good movie. Hype it up as a shocking movie

I don't expect it to blow my mind, I know what kind of movie it is, but I am super curious to see it. I dig exploitation so it could be one of the better ones since I've heard it called a masterpiece. That term gets thrown around a lot and I question when people say that because it can be very subjective, but for someone to say that for a movie about cannibals and rape and animal cruelty with a realistic documentary style and a beautiful score, it definitely perks my ears. Thanks for the advice though.
