I think using it as a coaster might be a bit extreme, but even if you don't like it, you could always sell it or give it to a friend as a gift.

There is a touch of softness to the overall depth of the image, but it still falls into the top 10 of my 120 BD collection.

The movie is fun too. It has sentiment, humour, and a commentary on the very important social topics of the 60's (which are still somewhat relevant even today).

Highly Recommended!

Besides, with Christopher Walken you can NEVER GO WRONG!!!
I second that Christopher Walken sentiment. He's the best.

I know, it was a joke. That is what I usually do, if I dont like a movie I give it to somebody or I throw it on Ebay. I am sure it will be good though, not to mention its just another to add to the collection

Chicago 2003 was a very well made and likeable modern musical. It's very edgy in that it's got sex and sex appeal upfront, with the musical numbers highlighted as fantasy. A high PG-13.

Hairspray is an all-out musical in the 50s-60s sense with a slight nod to the 2000's sensibilities. The sexual content is coy and innocent (except for one number that is funny). The musical numbers are just part and parcel of everyday life. Just PG.

I got both. But Hairspray is FUN and FUNNY, unlike Chicago which is catty and *****y. Save Chicago for when you need a little sexy attitude pep. You can watch Hairspray anytime.

The PQ in this movie is horribly soft, with a bitrate often in the single digits and usually in the low teens. I assume part of the reason in this case is the decision to include what I assume is a fake PIP version. This is a very inauspicious high def debut for NL and makes clear that they will be following in Warner's footsteps in every respect except the delayed HD DVD release date. This is definitely not what high def is supposed to be. Comparing the PQ on this disc with the superlative PQ on recent Fox releases like Silver Surfer, Mr. Brooks and Prison Break makes me want to cry.

For Peter Bracke to give this 4.5 stars for PQ is further proof that he is completely blind and most likely a red shill as well.

Although I agree that 4.5/5 is a bit much, it's not far off. Despite the soft quality to the image it is still an AMAZING looking Hi-Def transfer. I didn't even look at the bitrate numbers until 3/4 of the way through the film but was astounded at how good it looked. In my review I will be giving it an 8/10. Compared to many Warner titles, 'Hairspray' looks superior.

Since this encode was done for HD DVD there's scads of room for the fake PiP version, since there is no PiP on the forthcoming HD DVD

Are you sure your TV/outputs are properly configured? I haven't seen it, but several great sets of eyes have loved it, and they're far from smoothie afficianados

Its not for everyone, but i was laughing from the first song because of how big she is and her singing, but after that it cools down and its pretty entertaining, you shouldve waited for the "Corny Collins Show" because its a good song

My setup is able to show me outstandingly detailed PQ on titles like Silver Surfer, Mr. Brooks, Prison Break, and SM3. Believe me, it's not my setup. This is the same kind of situation we saw when Batman Begins came out on HD DVD (this was before I stopped buying those) and lots of people were saying this looks just great, while I and a few others were saying it was soft. I think the informed consensus now is that BB is in fact soft. Hairspray is softer.

You do realize that Hairspray, unlike BB was intentionally soft to give it that "dreamy" quality theatrically?

I was not aware of that. Still, soft is soft, and I would quarrel with anyone who says Hairspray has anything like outstanding PQ, regardless of the reason for the softness.

Low bitrates like the ones used on this title will never provide PQ like that on recent Fox high bitrate releases. When I see higher bitrates on movies like Santa Claus 3, at least I can feel comfortable that the softness I see on my display is in the source material rather than in the encoding process.

You might get it in time for the next Hairspray remake.

Can you give me scenes and timecodes to check when I get my copy so I can see what you're talking about? My BD10 doesn't have a bitrate meter

If you're sensitive to softness, I think you will see it throughout Hairspray. I didn't particularly think that the amount of softness varied from scene to scene. But perhaps focus on close-ups of faces, which never have the sharpness and clarity in this movie that I see in movies with first rate PQ. Now that I think about it a bit more, the opening panorama of rooftops in Baltimore looked especially bad.

The movie is not my kind of bag, but yeah, the look is intentional. I seriously doubt any of the 'look' some people here are complaining about is caused by the BD encode.

All of that sounds like what I saw theatrically
