So I can see the logic so far and am interested in seeing how the other two play out.
It's very obvious why three films are "needed". The same reason reshoots that were longer than most expensive blockbusters get in total were needed for "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King". PJ has NEVER made a film on budget. For "Lord of the Rings" he spent the whole budget on the first film and would have been screwed if the film hadn't been a huge success such that New Line were happy to pay for the "reshoots" and a year's extra work for each subsequent movie, having signed a contract that was supposed to take delivery of all three films at once.

"King Kong" got delivered at the last minute WAY over budget. Lessons were learnt and when "Halo" was following the usual pattern Universal weren't stupid and walked away.

"The Hobbit" was supposed to have finished after the best part of 2 years work at the end of last Summer. Jackson had gone over-budget again and hadn't even started filming the final battle. All that crap about "having too much material" was just PR to get the fans on-side and push back against Warners who were pushing for the TWO films they'd signed up and paid for and had negotiated a shitload of contracts for merchandise and marketing for.

The third film was supposed to come out in Summer but surprise! surprise! has just been pushed back to Christmas. Who'd like to bet that the "reshoots" (as a minimum that'll be shooting the final battle from scratch because NOTHING of that has been filmed yet) for the second and third films this Summer (prolonged into next Summer too?) cost more than the average blockbuster?

To pretend that three films are needed because "detail" is lacking from the book is completely ludicrous. It's three films to get more money. Pure and simple. And while fans are happy to pay the ticket prices that generate revenues like the USD1 billion the first film (arguably the longest, most turgid, self-indulgent film I've seen in a long time) the process will no doubt continue.

So do we actually know what the sneak peek is? A trailer maybe? (hopefully) Or a behind the scenes snippet?

This preview will only be available at 7pm on Sunday, March 24 and will not be available at any other time.

To access the preview, use the code above and enter it into the site at http://wwws.warnerbros.co.uk/thehobbitpart1/sneak/ on Sunday, March 24. Those who have entered the code will be able to see the exclusive first look of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, hosted by Peter Jackson at 7pm.
It seems to be a webcast or something. Not something that you can download or watch anytime you want.

2D version is now £17 at Amazon. Seems reasonable. Really hoping the 3D version will drop below £20 though...

It's usually the ones that sell-out after five minutes of going on sale.

Generally speaking the popular movies sell out fast, so something like Iron Man (Thor and Captain America were very popular too) didn't last long. Same goes for a limited edition if it's given a smallish number say under 3,000 as well as retailer exclusives (like Who Framed Roger Rabbit). A title with lots of embossing and/or debossing and great artwork (for a great movie) will be sought after.

Once a title goes OOP they pretty much go up in value but you'd have to keep the title sealed to get the most out of your investment. But even opened Steelbook's™ go for silly money if they're hard to find. There are no hard and fast rules though so just enjoy your Steel and if it's worth a fortune in a few years time, well then that's a bonus.

Hi i am thinking of pre ordering the hobbit through tesco as play.com don't appear to be selling it which is quite peculiar!! Anyway i was wondering what are they like with pre orders, good, bad or alright. I've heard they try to get it to you release date at the latest. However i would like a second opinion. Amazon claim not to offer free supersaver release date delivery without paying for first class, but unfortunatley only they have the code for the hobbit desolation of smaug preview.I was wondering also when do they get it to you for?

Many thanks.

keep watching blu ray lovers
