"King Kong" got delivered at the last minute WAY over budget. Lessons were learnt and when "Halo" was following the usual pattern Universal weren't stupid and walked away. "The Hobbit" was supposed to have finished after the best part of 2 years work at the end of last Summer. Jackson had gone over-budget again and hadn't even started filming the final battle. All that crap about "having too much material" was just PR to get the fans on-side and push back against Warners who were pushing for the TWO films they'd signed up and paid for and had negotiated a shitload of contracts for merchandise and marketing for. The third film was supposed to come out in Summer but surprise! surprise! has just been pushed back to Christmas. Who'd like to bet that the "reshoots" (as a minimum that'll be shooting the final battle from scratch because NOTHING of that has been filmed yet) for the second and third films this Summer (prolonged into next Summer too?) cost more than the average blockbuster? To pretend that three films are needed because "detail" is lacking from the book is completely ludicrous. It's three films to get more money. Pure and simple. And while fans are happy to pay the ticket prices that generate revenues like the USD1 billion the first film (arguably the longest, most turgid, self-indulgent film I've seen in a long time) the process will no doubt continue. Generally speaking the popular movies sell out fast, so something like Iron Man (Thor and Captain America were very popular too) didn't last long. Same goes for a limited edition if it's given a smallish number say under 3,000 as well as retailer exclusives (like Who Framed Roger Rabbit). A title with lots of embossing and/or debossing and great artwork (for a great movie) will be sought after. Once a title goes OOP they pretty much go up in value but you'd have to keep the title sealed to get the most out of your investment. But even opened Steelbook's™ go for silly money if they're hard to find. There are no hard and fast rules though so just enjoy your Steel and if it's worth a fortune in a few years time, well then that's a bonus. |
