Friday the 13th 3D would be nice to have on blu ray 3D in 2017.

We now have 1 true last shot at getting a true 3d blu ray of part 3! The next Friday the 13th movie has been confirmed to start shooting this spring. If we don't see the 3d blu for part 3 by end of this year, all hope is gone. Such a shame too,who would've thought jaws 3d would make it to 3d blu, but not Friday the 13th part 3?

Also, are they really that clueless? There was some kind of list on a site a while back with the top 5 most requested 3d blus, and this was #2!!! Just give us the the damn 3d blu and take our money already.

That would be awesome. I would assume the studio has at least 1 print of the over/under 35mm film reels somewhere, so it would just be a matter of scanning that and releasing it. I did a quick google search on scanning prices and found this site that says at a price of 17 cents a foot for 2K, and its 90 feet per 1 minute of footage. So at roughly 95 minutes of runtime thats 90x95x.17 = $1,453.50. If they just threw that on a formatted BD disc they could easily sell for $20-25, they would definitely make their money back. It boggles my mind that there are so few champions a release of this in an actual stereoscopic 3D format.

On the subject of the new Friday the 13th film, I hope it isn't a rush job to retain the rights, as part of the deal Paramount made with Warner over Interstellar stated that they had to make a new film for the franchise within five years or the rights would revert to Warner. Now since the agreement was made in 2013, but Interstellar wasn't released until 2014, I wonder if they have until 2018 or 2019. Either way, I hope it goes well and they make a solid new addition to the franchise.

Part 3 is coming out again in on Blu Ray in German by 84' Entertainment early next month.
Sadly no real 3d. But should be interesting since the part 8 transfer they did clearly looked better and the part 2 version looked like it was a very slight improvement. (based on screen caps at caps-a-holic)

The Friday the 13th 2017 movie has been postponed to an unknown time. It's possible that movie could've sparked work on an official blu ray 3D disc of the older Friday the 13th 3D.

I've had a question for a while now and you guys seem more knowledgeable than most would be on the matter:

What is the feasibility of someone setting up a custom 3D conversion shop for us niche customers akin to the custom Steelbook shops like Blufans, Filmarena etc... A company that would do professional 3D versions of movies that have never had 3D releases. As the demise of 3D looms with ever more certainty there are so many films that will never see a release... Is it possible it could continue to exist in this niche, specialty format or is it simply too complicated and expensive to ever happen. Friday the 13th and The Little Shop of Horrors (which they originally pushed heavily for 3D) and LOTR are my dream movies.

I guess it could be feasible, but I'm sure licensing the films would be difficult in the US. But if they had a decent source the process would be about the same as any other Bluray release from a 35mm scan, and there wouldn't be any real difficulty in creating a base 3D version. For instance, the actual F13 part 3 print has over/under format so it would just need to be scanned for a master. The issue would really just be licensing and amount of work to clean up and author a Bluray, which is probably not really a good financial investment because you're targeting a segment of a segment of a segment of the market. There is definitely some money to be made there, but it seems like a return on increment would be difficult. But if the licensing was cheap (or just worked out on a royalty-payment basis) then it mightbe doable. In a few years there might be a bigger market for it though.

- I would've expected the Germans to at least get it right. Baffling and frustrating to see it get yet another 2D release.

I have no doubt that at this point an actual 3D release would do better than average business, possibly outsell most any film in the series, such is the pent-up demand.

I blame the 'death of 3-D' crowd, all the pundits and ignoramuses who thought that was a story worth running and a bandwagon worth hopping on. And yet the demand is still there. I think we're going to have to be more vocal and proactive contacting labels and studios from this point on.

For unreleased 3-D films, it should be doable in some cases. Especially when a digital 3D master has already been created. For films that were never 3D in the first place, forget about it. The only 3D conversions worth watching cost millions of dollars; it's an extremely labour-intensive process. For 3-D films that already exist on celluloid, those can be scanned and mastered, that's what needs to happen. Its at least double the cost of creating a 2D master, but a 2D master will be created in the process.

See the work of the 3-D Film Archive. They have been the beacon of hope in all of this. But again, licensing remains an issue. WB titles are not available, and other studios will have already licensed certain titles to labels that aren't interested in 3-D releases, and may withhold popular titles for themselves.

Going forward, I think in order to remain viable, it may need to be a case of small runs and high-prices.

Yeah, I suppose it would have have to be done by fan with plenty of movie who can afford to run for the joy of doing it and not necessarily turning a profit.

I know that many of the steelbook companies run into licensing issues and they are not actually altering the film (which 3D conversion would most certainly do).

I figured that was the case. Thanks for your thoughts!

Went ahead and ordered the German part 3 mediabook. It's currently showing a March 3rd release date so hopefully I'll have it by end of next month. Fingers crossed for a left eye print!

I've mentioned the media's role in this several different times but no one has seemed to agree with me. There has been very strong anti 3D propaganda thrown out there by movie critics and A/V aficionados from the very beginning, people Who coined the term "gimmick", and people simply spit it back up like gospel. I'ts what kept me from buying a 3D TV for years and I suspect most people who don't like it have seen a quality 3D movie on a newer 4K TV.

I agree with you, except that I don't think any of the anti-3D propagandists have the right to call themselves A/V aficionados.

Friday the 13th Part III ought to have been one of the very first 3D blu rays released, it's far superior to EVERYTHING in 3D made since.

I picked up the German mediabooks of part 2 and 3. My arrival date is around the 22nd of March. Keeping my fingers crossed!

This is my Dream title in 3D.

I'm behind the times here but I did not know that the entire FRIDAY THE 13th collection was released to blu-ray until last night!

Such a great looking set! I can't believe with such a definitive package, they didn't release Part 3 on 3D Bluray! That would have been the optimum time to do it!

Has the new Friday the 13th been shelved? As long as that has life I suppose there is always hope!

Anyone know how I can snag the bluray set for a decent price? Prices on eBay were crazy!

Getting the set for a decent price might be tough now as it hasn't popped up at any retailers recently. But Best Buy did have it in stock lady Halloween after it was supposedly OOP so maybe you can get it cheaper around October if they have some in a warehouse or something.

It is really a shame they didn't release part 3 in Stereoscopic 3D already. Since I've been working on this little project it's become apparent that if they just used one of the actual 35mm over/under prints it would be little to no effort to actually make a modern 3D version. The red/blue version they released is awful and not even how it was originally theatrically shown, so the logic just doesn't make sense on Paramount/Warners part.

I know there is some litigation going on between one of the original screenwriters Victor Miller vs. Sean S. Cunningham's company Horro Inc/The Manny Company in which Miller is trying to terminate the granting of rights for the franchise to Warner/Paramount. This could be a reason the newer film is on hold as well as additional home video releases. The new film did seem pretty rushed though and the constant start and stop of the production probably would have made for a bad film, but we most likely won't get much info or new material until the lawsuit is resolved.

I should be getting my part 3 mediabook tomorrow. Typically the German Mediabooks look just a bit better with a little more detail and grain. I've got part 2. With 3 and 7 coming around the corner, I'll likely put up some screencaps as soon as I get em.

Usually I'm not big on packaging but these look amazing.

I just got the German mediabook version of part 3. It's SO close to the previous version but I would give it a very slight edge over the US and UK versions. Its hard to notice, but it's just a hair sharper.

Much closer than part 2 and 7, and those weren't much better either.

UK Version

German Mediabook
