I'm quite certain that the blacks on the SC disc of Playtime (and maybe others?) are fudged (i.e. the colour space is set incorrectly), and that the Criterion disc will fix this issue. It's not the first time SC have done this:

Criterion: http://i.imgur.com/MVqqXut.jpg

So I'd wait for reviews of the Criterion discs.

Some of the alternative films in the Studio Canal set, the English Mon Oncle and the '94 Jour de Fete - here they're listed as 720, but were they not all 1080p on the BFI discs?

Oh, I am doing, and all things being equal I probably will still pick up the Criterion anyway. I'm pleased that these films are back out there on the UK market tho.

I'll be going with the criterion version.

I'm very disappointed with shots of the new transfer, because while we no longer have the blue metallic sheen we now have a watery green submersion, which to my eyes looks no more appealing (nor likely to be accurate) than the blue did. And the skin tones have that tanned leather look of so many recent BD transfers.

As far as Play Time goes, for now I'm sticking with my BFI BD, even though it may not have the detailed resolution of the new transfer. I'll be interested to see how the rest of the films scrub up.

Tend to agree that the color space looks incorrectly set.

The new transfer is a lot less green than the Criterion transfer is blue though, so I disagree that it wouldn't be more correct.

Actually the more I compare it the more I'm convinced of the inferiority of the Criterion grade. Looking at it from a purely subjective viewpoint, disregarding the age of the film or any notion of what it should look like, I think it really does not look good at all. It's murky, it has no color, skin tones are an alien purple/magenta, it's just a blanket blue cast as if someone was doing a day-for-night grade. Perhaps the reduction source they used is partly to blame for the dull, washed-out look.

maybe the new restoration with properly set color space is the right look.

Reading the booklet detailing the restoration work, it's clear that great efforts were made to ensure that PLAYTIME and the other films were mastered correctly to Tati's original vision. Judging from that, I'd say it's far more likely that previous versions were incorrect.

Here is a caps comparison between the new Studio Canal transfer of Playtime with the old Criterion blu-ray: http://www.dvdclassik.com/forum/view...p?f=32&t=35333

The details in the new transfer look so much better.

They could put mono on left & right. People using headphones won't think they've gone deaf in one ear.

Yeah, it's dual mono, as opposed to stereo.

Dual Mono -- standard practice. Two channels, identical output.

The trouble with so many labels is that they often don't state on the box whether the 2.0 is dual mono or true stereo. In the case of PLAYTIME it's true stereo, so I'm not sure why dual mono is being discussed here.

I only brought that up, since other discs in the collection state this on the back and I just wanted some clarification.

I'm just surprised that Criterion is advertising Playtime as 5.1 - which would suggest that they are using the original 70mm 6-track stems, which they also did for 'The Young Girls of Rochefort' bluray edition -giving the Criterion edition one up from the French bluray edition which is only 2.0

I don't suppose that anyone has a spare case (in mint condition of course) willing to send it to a fellow forum user :P ?
Mine came like this (thanks amazon), but I wasn't here when it arrived so the person that collected it on my behalf, just threw everything away (receipt, amazon cardbox etc), so I don't think that I can make a sound complain now .

A shame really, as it was a set I expected a lot.

You don't need any of that, your purchase is recorded in Your Account/Your Orders. Just select Return Or Replace and follow the instructions.

Thanks ! I shall proceed as you said. It's the first time that I receive a battered case so I thought that I needed the receipt and the box.

Interestingly (and frustratingly at the same time) it doesn't appear as an amazon product anymore, but instead it is offered through Zavvi outlet, thus rendering a replacement (at the moment) impossible. Should I proceed with the refund and just reorder it (will I get a full refund), wait till (if) it becomes available by amazon, or just send them an e-mail? What is also weird is that in the description they have it as region A .
