I second that wholeheartedly. I remember purchasing the Tartan VHS back in 1996 for £19.99. It was a seminal cinematic moment for me; mesmerizing images and haunting electro-choral music and a feeling of actually being in the jungle . Then, a few years later, the Anchor Bay DVD came out with the commentary and that track remains one of the all-time great commentaries.

Yes, bring on the boxed set!

The Shout Factory rep has stated their masters are direct from Herzog's company, approved by the director himself. So that either means they tinkered with them heavily after getting them, or the BFI went to a different, superior source. I suppose the latter is more likely because there are framing differences and a weird horizontal squash on the Shout disc. Weird.

The digital artifacts on the SF edition look very similar to the ones on the German Studio Canal. At least it's pretty easy to choose which one to get now.

Thanks I just ordered this for £44.99

Also actually checking the runtime for many of the film which are actually shorts or TV documentaries, 8 disks seems perfectly fine.

Looking forward to this now.

I don't trust Shout Factory after the screw up with the Bruce Lee Legacy Collection boxset ages ago.

Thank you so much! I just cancelled my 57 pounds Amazon.co.uk order and ordered it for 44.99 pounds instead. Time to order some more Blu-rays.

Btw, for anyone still on the fence,

Amazon.ca has the Shout Factory set for 111.99 CAD / ~ 102.79 USD / ~ 60.93 GBP / 74,70 EUR right now:

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00JGR3M26/

(Another pre-order cancelled for me!)

Just realised that's actually cheaper than the lowest Amazon price it was at (£46.11). Tempted to cancel, but Amazon will likely package it better...hmm not sure.

I'm not exactly sure how amazon's pre-order price promise works, but I ordered this from them just after it was announced and the price I'm currently paying is £46.11. And, speaking personally, I'd rather trust amazon's boxset packaging than Zavvi's.

Haha yeah I did place an order with Zavvi but cancelled again after I realised my Amazon order I had used one of those "spend £25/£30 get £5 off" codes so actually my order is £41.11. So still cheaper than Zavvi and more reliable. Plus I've used a few gift certificates with the order (making it just over £15) - so unless HMV get a good deal on these as they sometimes do with new BFI releases I'll be sticking with Amazon for the time being.

BFI just sent me copies of Nosferatu and Aguirre (I encoded and authored them). For those of you interested in the transfer that was used in this version, specifically of Nosferatu, you've probably already seen the comparison screen grabs online. The post-scanning work was done at Deluxe Soho, by the same talented people who you'll probably recognize from Arrow's new transfers:

Beautiful packaging, I think.

So, this is a different scan than what was provided to Shout Factory? Or The BFI used the raw files? I'm wondering why Herzog would approve of two very different transfers/masters.

I imagine one may be a lot older than the other (certainly the English version found on the SF disc). Doesn't mean both can't be approved.

I don't personally know if it is a different raw scan. But it's certainly not the same master, which is obvious by looking at the screen grabs.

If they were both the same at one point, they've obviously gone down two very different paths before getting to their final destinations.

Beautiful Steelbook, despite the fact that it's silver. It would look even more amazing in black or white. I'll certainly be getting this version since Shout's is disappointing in comparison. I might just opt for the boxset since I want Aguirre, and a few others too.

Awesome! Packaging looks as I expected - similar to the Seven Samurai steelbook. Any chance you could take a few pics of the Aguirre one? I'm tempted to buy it too as it's one of my favourite films and I'm getting too excited about the boxset!
