My DVD collection was never that large as funds wouldn't allow it and I wasn't that big into collecting at the time. So, I haven't had to replace many DVD titles and now I buy Blu-rays almost exclusively. Some were easy upgrades, like bumping the individual DVD releases of LOTR up to the Blu-ray LOTR EE box set. Another was the Dark Knight Trilogy box set. There are very few titles on DVD I just have to have (The Hollow Crown being one of them) because they aren't available in Blu and likely never will be. The UK release is Region B only, what were they thinking?!

I wasn't so lucky. My Laserdisc collection was quite large but, because of their high cost, I had to be somewhat selective. When DVD's came along they were so much cheaper, that my DVD collection became much larger. Now its much reduced but my Blu-ray collection is now getting out of control.

p.s. Anyone want to buy the laserdiscs I still have, many of which probably have succumbed to laser rot or warping by now?

I still have the DVDs of films I have on blu where the blu-ray has a different version from what is available on blu. For example, Stripes, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Dumb & Dumber, Talladega Nights, Amadeus - the blus are only extended versions, while the DVDs are the theatrical cuts.

The only DVD releases I still watch are concerts, the Laurel and Hardy Essentials (which should have had a Blu-ray release) and once a year or so, Escape from Alcatraz (also needs a Blu-ray release). With those exceptions, when I'm in the mood to watch something, I always pick a blu-ray. DVD just doesn't cut it on a large screen.

When I first purchased my Blu-ray Player,
I told myself I would keep my DVD's and then all 'new' movie purchases would be Blu-rays.
That plan didn't work, once I saw and heard the difference.

I can count about 33 DVD's that I upgraded to Blu-ray.
The old DVD's then went to Yard Sales and Best Buy's upgrade program.

The only DVD's I'll buy now are usually TV Series that aren't on Blu...
Such as... Seinfeld, Hogan's Heroes, Munster's, Monty Python, Superman, Gilligan, etc.

I think I might be the only one in this thread who still buys dvd's. But, for selected movies (read as favorite movies), yes I have upgraded to Blu Ray from DVD. For others the SD is fine.

I try my best only to upgrade movies I really love which pretty much comes down to Studio Ghbili and Pixar films and a few select others. A nice blu Ray steelbook with cool art is a good reason too. :P

I have a DVD collection of about 500 at which I've been slowly whittling away for the past 2-3 years or so -- I believe there are about 150 or so left that I've yet to upgrade to BD. Of course I own ~100 films that have yet to be announced for Blu-ray, most of which are independent and/or LGBT, which I doubt will ever see an HD release. I will always buy Blu-ray when I can, though; if a new release is announced only for DVD, I will most likely not buy it, unless it's anime.

I upgrade if the transfer is excellent. Anything that is standard or subpar I pass on. Thst even goes for some of my favorite films.

I will only break the rule if I feel that Blu-Ray is the last medium for that film.

My main priority is stuff I don't already own, but I've upgraded a few DVDs when it was worth it/convenient.
The only DVDs I've "upgraded" are Halloween (and all 7 sequels), Scream (and all 3 sequels), Prom Night, Frankenstein (Karloff), Some Like it Hot, The Seven Year Itch, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and National Lampoon's Vacation (and European Vac.).

In the future, I do plan on upgrading Psycho, Vertigo, The Wizard of Oz, Nightmare on Elm Street 1-4, Friday the 13th 1-3, and Dragon Ball Z if a 4:3 Blu-ray is ever released here. I got Yu Yu Hakusho seasons 1-2 on DVD before I made the switch, but I plan on getting the remaining seasons on Blu-ray and will possibly upgrade 1-2 in the distant future.

I'm still not shy about buying DVDs if I don't expect a Blu-ray release to ever happen.

Everything you plan on upgrading is a must, well except for Dragon Ball Z because I'm not too familiar with it so I couldn't tell you. Everything else I have and have upgraded and it's totally worth it!!!!!! And yes, I upgrade my DVD'S most definitely! I want the best picture and sound possible!

I upgrade everything that gets a BD release and only keep the DVD's of titles that may never get a BD release or have not at this moment in time.

I upgraded the majority of my collection with Best Buy's upgrade and save promotion. It helps that catalog titles are cheap.

Thanks for letting me know! Now I'm more excited than ever to upgrade them! It's been more than worth it for the ones I've mentioned (especially Prom Night).

About 160 of Blu-Rays, I already owned on DVD.
And DVD looks awful imo, like why would I want to watch it in 480 when it's available in 1080.

Escape from Alcatraz is already out on Blu-ray in most countries

I had about 600 dvds. i've slowly sold them off as they become available on blu ray. Usually for terrible returns at moviestop.com. But if they have value i sell them off on amazon still have about 100 dvds left. either TV shows or stuff not on blu ray yet.

I'm aware of that, I just don't normally import. I'm usually patient but may have to make an exception for this if it doesn't get a US release fairly soon.

Too bad they got rid of that. Still have way too many to unload.
