This is easily my most anticipated movie since Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and possibly Jurassic Park! I've heard trickles about it for so long and the fact it's getting almost the best reviews of any action movie of the last 20 years has me hyped beyond belief.

Besides, if junk like Avengers can become one of the biggest movies of all time, that should signal the end of humanity more than Mad Max 4 getting beat by Pitch Perfect. Not to mention, one is R and the other is not, so by proxy, more tickets can (and will) be sold for the PG movie. |

Umm...and? I re-quoted something which had been flying all around the internet as fact and even had evidence to back it up, I attempted to do research which did not yield that Cannes article that later was linked, and I acknowledged that is certainly a more definitive source as soon as bates_motel posted it! Maybe 2D and 3D should be longer words so they would be able to be searched for properly in google.

Fury Road is almost flawless, although I didn't care for one particularly gimmicky 3D sequence, and I wish that they had left the landscapes alone instead of painting the backgrounds with CGI a lot of the time. The practical effects and stunts are out of this world, though. Incidentally, I watched Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome last night for the first time since I saw it at the theater 30 years ago. Thunderdome is the weak link in the series, but even it is engaging and fun in that glorious 1980s dystopia sort of way. Funny... I did not realize until last night that the pilot in Beyond Thunderdome is actually a different character altogether than the pilot in The Road Warrior, although they are played by the same actor. I assumed during my childhood that the character had carried over to both movies, and, quite honestly, it's not a stretch to assume that either way, because the movie works anyway. |

He probably prefers 2D anyways and is just saying 3D to boost profits. Otherwise why would he screen the movie in 2D? dun dun dun |

I kind of think that's the case, too (about profits) but I have nothing to back it up so I'll yield to the Cannes article. This is about the only movie forum I go to where anyone prefers 3D versions of things to the 2D versions regardless of filmmaker intent so I don't want to rain on anyone's parade. The 3D might be good! I still think I'm going to see it in 2D. :P They're not playing it in imax anywhere around here, unfortunately, it's all just Avengers straight until Jurassic World. Ugh. |

[Show spoiler] The 3-D in my theater looked pretty good. You can't really tell anymore between a post convert and native filmed 3-D, but the screening I saw had good depth but wasn't immersive like IMAX because the screen (and theater) was smaller. |

I know Hardy signed on for 3 more films. Depending on box office, we'll see if they get made (or even one of them). Maybe then he can actually play Max, and not a mumbling side character with none of the charisma of Gibson. |

Mad Max has never really been the most dynamic or exciting character in the movies. He's simply the center around which all sorts of more chaotic and more fascinating things happen. I've always just figured that the movies are appropriately named because Max always runs into trouble during his wanderings, but the most rewarding characters are usually the ones along the periphery.
For this reason, I did not have a problem with Tom Hardy's somewhat laconic portrayal of the character, and I also did not have a problem with Charlize Theron's Furiosa being the main character, so to speak. |

The whole Max problem falls squarely on Miller. After seeing this film, they should have brought Gibson back. His appearance would have brought the whole back story of the character into the mix, and it's not Hardy's fault that the role was so poorly defined. In fact he clashed with Miller during the production over what Max's role was supposed to be. I liked this movie but didn't love it. There's no character development. It's like they took MAD MAX and used the property as the basis for a modern day "amusement park" blockbuster movie. Some will love it, but some hard core fans of the older films might be disappointed there's no weight to it, mainly because there's nobody to care about. |

All of these movies are dumb corporate products. We've come to a point where not one of these summer movies, so far, has a truly developed story line or is anything other than "brainless popcorn fun". MAD MAX is better directed than the others, and the action is intense, but at the end of the day, it's a dumb movie -- without any developed characters or story line -- about post-apocalyptic psychos running around in the desert. How is that "higher art" than a dumb comedy about singing teenagers? The Cinemascore audience polling also indicates the Pitch Perfect audience likes that film more than the people who bought tickets to see Mad Max (which got an okay B+, not the A grade Pitch Perfect audience received)...so maybe not everyone agrees with the kool-aid all the critics drank about how "brilliant" Mad Max is. |
