Has AIRPORT: UFO come up in this thread yet? That was the Larry Cohen script, which I guess was in the works while CONC was in production. I have no idea if it had a mothership come along and seaQuest up a plane in midflight or whether they just spend the film dancing with one another in mid-air, but I heard about the script off & on all through the 80s. Unlike JAWS 3, PEOPLE NOTHING, never actually found or read this, though during highschool in the 70s, I had my own variation in mind; SPACEPORT 2020 (which I guess would have been similar to what THE BLACK HOLE evolved from, since that was originally a disaster movie about a space station hit by a supernova.)
A:UFO sounds like the kind of thing they'd reboot with Abrams, at least on a sunny day up in the sky you could justify a lot of lens flares. In fact, it'd be fun to see somebody try this idea as a short: y'know, somebody reaches up to activate the little reading light, and this huge CLOSE ENCOUNTERS looking lens flare comes on, glaring off the in-flight-meal-tray like it's a lunch restaurant table surrounded by Garrison's gang in JFK. "We're IN the looking glass here, people ... " |

Price just dropped to $17.99. Have you guys got any info on the BD case: will it be individual cases or only one multi-disc case?

From the looks of it, it is some sort of multipak, probably something similar to the DVD set. I just hope it isn't one of those pieces of crap with the cardboard sleeves. I would have much rather had an outer box, with four cases and each film's original cover art. Still, you take what you can get. However, it would have been nice to have some special features. At $17.99, that is roughly $4.50 per film, so as long as the films look good, I really can't complain. But with Universal, who knows?

That I can live with. Again, at $17.99 for the four films, I'll be happy if they all get above average transfers at the very least. As far as special features go, it makes sense that there are none as most of the actors are aging or dead. Charlton Heston, George Kennedy, Dean Martin, Jimmy Stewart, et al, all dead, unfortunately. Also, a few of the films have extended cuts, but I've never seen them, so again, I can't complain.

Not sure but I purchased the French releases and "Airport 1975" looks great. A significant improvement over the DVD. "Airport' 77" also looks great although there are some signs of sharpening, but nothing egregious. "Airport '79" is the least impressive but still a noticeable upgrade from the DVD. A lot of the process shots look very soft and grainy but the rest is just fine. Without a full restoration on these, this is the best they'll look

Anything would be an improvement over the Universal DVD of Airport 1975, which was incorrectly mastered at the wrong aspect ratio, so everyone was either suuuuper fat or suuuuper thin, can't remember which.

Yeah everything was squeezed and made to look out of proportion. Even the Universal logo at the beginning of the film looked more oval than circular.

Pretty huge fan of this series here, and saw the news of the BD release; I own the Airport Terminal Pack of the DVDs and generally have no complaints (some are bothered by the aforementioned Airport 1975 shape debacle but when I watch the disc it never really irks me) -- however, it is disappointing to learn that Universal dropped no special features on any of these, leaving them as bare-bones as the DVD set. Where is the alternative longer TV cut of Airport '77 depicting the stealing of the sleeper gas agent from the military base? What about some behind-the-scenes stuff?
I don't really see a need to upgrade from the Terminal Pack, personally, being that I think Universal did an outstanding job on the original film's widescreen transfer...man, does that dry but classically fun film look smooth and clean... ![]() I always thought the audio mixes of these films could use work, though -- even the original film's DTS "surround" track on DVD is quite lame and hollow (but better than the mono tracks on the later sequels). How's the audio on the Blu-rays? Interesting tidbit about the Terminal Pack: I don't know who at Universal was responsible for this, but there are typos and mistakes galore on the packaging of that set...one of the descriptions reads "ON DOLBY AND DTS..." or some such reference...
