I didn't keep my glasses on and it was fine. I don't recall needing to do it, but I'd quickly switch back and forth between two preset picture settings if the brightness bothered me.

Having just the last part encoded in 3D would’ve resulted in a pause while the screen went black and then my TV would flash its “3D” indicator onscreen which would be annoying.

THE MASK (1961) is the big one with partial 3-D. The whole thing is encoded for frame-packed 3-D. I just have my active glasses fired up and put them on when the otherworldly voice compels me to. No need to have them on throughout. Same would work for Freddy’s Dead.

I expect you're not doing that with a projector. Like I mentioned above, when you are in 3D mode and take your glasses off, you can see the signal flashing colour on screen, and it makes watching anything impossible.

Correct, I have an active Sony XBR65Z9D. If I had a projector I guess I’d keep them on. Worth it to be able to watch in proper 3-D instead of anaglyph.

I asked for a source for his claim, still to hear one. But if its true then it only aggravates me even more, and of course WB couldn't care less about adding it on a BR disc even as a bonus feat. Maybe it will show up on the AVP that way.

If WB still has discrete L & R elements still on tap for the 3-D sequence, then yes - a 3-D DCP would be possible and likewise for the 3-D sequence to be to included as a bonus feature.

While the 4K standards don't include discrete 3-D, a bluray bonus disc could easily have discrete bonus 3-D content included with standard 2-D bonus content, and has been done before.

Some have asked why 2-D features with 3-D sections are encoded as 3-D throughout. The simple answer is the transition from the 2-D material to 3-D material. If one uses seemless branching as is available in the bluray format, authoring such a disc is possible but you would trade off one inconvenience for a bigger one. Virtually every display when going from 2-D content to 3-D content & vise versa has to change various settings. This can effect refresh rates, going from the 1080p 2-D resolution to the doubled framepacked resolution of the 3-D bluray format, picture preset modes, etc. None are instantaneous. Projectors can take up to 30 seconds to change modes. On the 3-D flatscreen side of things the old Vizeos would pop up a dialog screen asking if you wanted to watch in 3D or 2D. Even the LG 3D OLEDs would take a bit to resync. Nobody wants to see that kind of interruption when watching a feature, and then have that repeated disruption happen anytime content changes from 2-D to 3-D or vise versa.

This is why 3-D DCPs and 3-D blurays with mixed content are encoded as 3-D start to finish. The transitions from 2D to 3-D remain seamless as intended. If you have a polarized display that is calibrated or a projector that uses RF for the glasses (and is calibrated) then yes, you could take the glasses off for the 2-D sections. Other 3-D display methods like DLP Link that insert a reference link flash will require you keep glasses on throughout.

We had looked into these different options when exploring 3-D authoring for "The Mask" and again for "Bellboy & the Playgirls". Other titles with 2-D / 3-D mixed content were authored the same way (3D throughout):

SPY KIDS 3-D
SHARKBOY & LAVA GIRL
TRON LEGACY

Thanks Greg. Nothing is better than reading an explanation from the pro.

This will probably get a theatrical re-release, was browsing our DBOX MFX console today and saw that the motion codes for 3-7 were added on. Would be nice if they did a reprint of the OG anaglyph glasses from 1991. Still pissed i didn't keep mine.

This is showing here in Vienna as part of a 3D retrospective at the Slash Film Fest. It’s listed as being shown on a DCP so i wonder if it will be a 3D DCP from the new restoration? Will definitely attend and report back
