Say what you will about Scream's custom covers, but at least they have reversible sleeves with the original artwork on the flip side. That's preferable to being stuck with something like this:

Not for nothing, but I really don't appreciate the way this has been handled. For some reason, it's really starting to bother me, the fact that we are all playing a guessing game regarding who is releasing Carrie, a classic horror film that launched the careers of its actors and director, and actually managed to receive acting Oscar nominations--rare for any horror film--back in 1977. This is a truly wonderful film, and I'm one of the many who found it genuinely unnerving, especially that first viewing.

It's great that the film is getting the Special Edition Blu-ray that, frankly, MGM should have given it in the first place, and I just hope that whichever label did get it treats the film with the respect it absolutely deserves.

I look forward to the official announcement soon.

If it is Scream I imagine this leak would force their hand to announce it this week, perhaps even tomorrow.

Indeed. Mid-October would be leaving it rather late I suspect!

Well, it sounds to me like she probably wasn't supposed to say anything and the OP is just trying to avoid getting anybody into trouble. I don't begrudge studios planning their marketing and release announcements to make the most of them and gain the most interest/sales.

Although I'm a hypocrite, I guess, because I'm annoyed after all the free-press Universal got on their restorations of the Marx Brothers and more monster movies, they've clammed up and said nothing for over a year.

My guess is it will be Shout (Scream) Factory releasing this. They seem to be taking over many already released MGM titles, most of the horror films. There was been no buzz regarding Criterion and basically MGM seems to be getting out of catalog title business. That said, at the end of the month Criterion has a *hint* drawing of a "dirty pillows" then I was wrong. :-)

I quite like the Scanners cover and the one for The Brood doesn't really bother me, the only thing is that it's pretty spoilerish for those who haven't seen the film.

At least with Criterion's covers, each film has their own identity, unlike Scream where everything is homogeneous with a few exceptions (Lake Placid, Shocker and a few others).

And so far, Criterion's De Palma titles have been given some pretty nice artwork:

Wow...to each his own.

I think both those covers have fantastic artwork.

...especially Scanners.

I am sort of neutral on both of those, but at least they're attempts at doing something artistic that applies to the movie's content instead of just applying a template of 80s blockbuster poster to the film.

The reversible artwork on Scream releases is great, except then you have to throw the slipcover away if you want to avoid looking at the Scream artwork.

I remember being so happy when Rosemary's Baby was announced and saw that they didn't screw with the poster art

I see lots of people talk about how SF's art looks so retro and that it reminds them of VHS artwork they saw in their old video rental stores, but I can't recall seeing that floating head style till Jackie Brown or Halloween H20. Their artwork seems to have a lot more in common with films now than those in the 80's/early 90's, since it seems all posters since The Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter use the floating head style.

The actual artistic style is a clear ripoff of Drew Struzan's work, who did a lot of iconic 80s movie posters. The floating head thing is a more modern concept though, yes. Although I believe that he actually did some of the ones you mention (ex Harry Potter).

I'd say influence rather than rip-off, at least for Paul Shipper. Drew was Shippers's greatest influence and the reason he became an illustrator. Struzan and Shipper are close friends too.

I think it's most likely Criterion. They've released it in the past, have since released several DePalma titles.

Can't wait for their July announcements.

Either way, no matter who releases it, it's bound to look better than the MPEG-2 release currently out there.

I'm guessing Criterion will release it. Mainly because Scream stated on either an episode of Killer Pov or Shock Waves they couldn't get the rights to the original. It was brought up while they were discussing their double feature release of the TV remake and Carrie 2. Things could have changed though!

The SCANNERS cover works so much better when you see the entire package. It really is pretty neat packaging that unfortunately will be lost when it get re-issued as a Blu-ray only.

And yeah, the De Palma covers are great (even though DRESSED TO KILL is just the original poster image minus the boarder.)

SF also said they didn't have the rights to Demon Knight, only to announce it days later.

I don't believe they said they couldn't get it, just that it would be a 'dream' to get - which may turn out to have been deliberately deceitful (along with one or two other comments in there perhaps). Certainly, there can be no question they would have had it by that point (should it turn out to be coming form Scream of course).

Plus, as Akijama has pointed out, Scream have licenced Carrie before.

If I could choose I'd hand Carrie over to Criterion, but Scream is also fine by me. The film desperately needs a remaster.
