I've never seen any of these Studio Ghibli films, so I've pre-ordered Spirited Away, just to satiate my curiosity.

Honestly, I can't say whether they'll be your thing or not, but they're wonderful films, and beautifully animated. Spirited Away was my gateway, and I'm sure many others, into the world of Studio Ghibli. It's still my favorite, but I just saw Kiki's Delivery Service in theater, and it might give it a run for its money.

Porco Rosso may have a tone and style that's closer to your tastes, so I'd check that one out too:

They truly are something marvelous.

Miyazaki and the other directors essentially create an animated Japan full of magic, mysticism, wonder, and adventure. It's as if you enter an alternate world and see a side you've never ever seen before.

I like to think in my own mind that all of the films are related some way.

I also just saw Kiki's Delivery Service in the theater. I've decided that's my favorite.

It's pretty wonderful. I definitely think Kiki is my favorite of all the Ghibli characters, but I still love the world and atmosphere in Spirited Away just a little more.

I love the seaside town in Kiki. So beautiful and enchanting.

The Wind Rises is my favorite, but Spirited Away is right there.

As someone who never enjoyed anime, my friend brought over some Studio Ghibili films and I enjoyed every one I saw. My favorites are Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro, they are really great films. I also saw Howl's Moving Castle which has some fun characters, and Castle in the Sky which was decent.

I popped my Miyazaki cherry with Spirited Away a few weeks ago, and I badly want to see more of his films now. TriArt (Swedish distributor) have plans to release them all (plus more Ghibli titles) on Blu-ray here, so I think I'm going to wait and get those, but I'm awfully tempted to get these GKIDS releases...

Looking forward to the correctly subbed releases of Mononoke, Kiki, CSIT and Pom Poko. Never picked Ponyo due to the lossy Japanese track, so that would be mine too. Additionally, if they add anything new and worthwhile on other releases, I'll have no choice but to pick them up too

My first impulse with anything Studio Ghibli is BUY BUY BUY (especially the Miyazaki films), but I already own all the individual Disney releases with slipcovers AND the Miyazaki Collection (for the fixed subtitles).

So I'm really torn about whether I need these...probably not, but I guess I need more info.

Ponyo is a good introductory film, lots of colors typical of Ghibli animation, not too much Japanese culture to decipher, and good for watching with family. The dub is alright, some of the actors are obviously Disney Channel but the old ladies are great.

Ponyo didn't actually have much to do with Disney Channel and Disney movie actors. Sure, they used younger siblings of Disney stars (Sosuke is Frankie Jonas and Ponyo is Noah Cyrus) but the rest of the English cast are Tina Fey and Matt Damon as Sosuke's parents and Ponyo's father is Liam Neeson and Cate Blanchett is the Mother of the Sea, and the three old women are Lily Tomlin, Betty White, and Cloris Leachman.

The Disney dubs don't really use that many Disney Channel people when you think about it, just sometimes people who tend to be big at the time which would include Disney Channel. I think Arrietty US dub is the most nepotistic Disney dub, using Bridgit Mendler, David Henrie, and Moisés Arias... which is why I'd like the UK dub as well. But apart from that, only 4 other films that use anybody with fame related to Disney.

Shia LaBeouf in Nausicaa
Ashley Tisdale in Whisper of the Heart
Daveigh Chase and Jason Marsden in Spirited Away
Anne Hathaway in The Cat Returns

Ashley Tisdale's part in Whisper isn't bad, and Jason Marsden has basically blown past his Disney fame so I never really minded that one (though he'll always be Kovu).

I actually think my favorite dub cast is Pom Poko, which aside from JTT is primarily veteran voice actors. It's just a shame the script is so muddled.

Maybe Goofy was capable of asexual reproduction all along! lol

Anybody know why GKIDS is releasing so many at once? Out of the 21 Ghibli films (22 if you want to count Ocean Waves, I personally don't until it gets a dub) and excluding The Wind Rises, 14 were Disney releases. Why not space them out to 3 or 4 per month? Do they just want to get them out ASAP?

Didn't he have a wife that was never shown on screen only heard in some of the shorts?
