NX9 is impressive, but not worth the dramatic additional cost IMO (but if you have the $$$ go for it!).

I think I'm getting one from a shipment that was already on order.

(will be pretty pissed if I have to wait until the end of February )

I agree. While the NX9 lens is visually better and having the 8K eShift can help if you sit close to the screen like myself (I tested an NX9 in my theatre), I can’t justify the cost difference. If it is $2-3K difference then yes, but nearly doubling the NX7 price is just far too much IMHO.

Would I do it if I have the money? Well, of course

so with the latest firmware on the NX7 would I be ok with an Xbox to play 4k discs or would I greatly benefit from a Panasonic DP-UB820 / Panasonic DPUB9000 to get the best results?

Yes, but you will be losing the superior Panasonic’s chroma upsampling.

is there a difference between the Panasonic DP-UB820 & Panasonic DPUB9000 in terms of video quality?

(I know the DPUB9000 has better build quality and audio outputs).

Video quality no, but the 9000 has a projector HDR Optimizer preset that you may or may not want to use. Audio quality, if you A/B with the 820, I sense a slightly wider soundstage on the 9000 than the 820. I’m sure people here will start popping up with their “digital is digital” declaration soon enough.

Panasonic's UB9000 adds the 2nd projector HDR Optimizer option. So you have High Luminance Projector and Mid Luminance Projector, the UB820 only has High Luminance projector.

You want the UB9000 to take advantage of Panasonic's priority HDR Optimizer so you can see the full dynamic tonal range and all of the color volume that is mastered in HDR content.

The HDR Optimizer is not about tone mapping that JVC's projectors do a very good job with the new Frame Adapt update. You will greatly benefit by paring any projector with Panasonic's UB9000's HDR Optimizer to repackage the EOTF PQ curve to a far more manageable peak luminance that your projector can take over and apply its tone mapping.

Other than integrating a Lumagen video processor, Panasonic's UB9000 is the only way to see the full benefits of HDR content in a Home Cinema presentation.

Oppo 203/205 also includes HDR optimization settings for projectors.

Thank you, but unfortunately not the same as Panasonic's priority HDR Optimizer. I was one of OPPO's Beta testers and also worked with Panasonic's engineers.

Panasonic's HDR Optimizer actually reformats the EOTF PQ curve to best match your display's peak luminance so your display gets the entire HDR dynamic tonal range and all of the color volume. That exclusive feature is most important for low luminance displays, like all projectors and many LCD/LED and OLED TVs.

so would you set the UB9000 to Mid Luminance Projector for the NX7?

Yes, set the UB9000's HDR Optimizer display type to "Mid Luminance Projector" and then turn on the HDR Optimizer.

I wasn't impressed with the Panasonic player. The picture-quality is significantly less sharp than with an Oppo 203.

Since the JVC has complex HDR optimization on-board now, I don't see it as necessary to use the Panasonic.

That’s literally the first time I heard anybody claim about Panasonic being less sharp than the 203. I used to own the 203 and both are identically as sharp (UB820 vs UB9000 vs 203).

@GenPion, something is not right somewhere in your set-up.

Other than Panasonic's very highly regarded HCX video processing the HDR Optimizer, when properly set-up, will give you the fully dynamic tonal range and full color volume.

Thanks to all for the wealth of info on the JVC N series projectors. I've owned a JVC DLA-HD950 for the past 10 years and am finally going to upgrade (a testament to how great the 950 has been). I was all set on the NX7 and now Sony has come out with their 715es model. Has anyone had the opportunity to compare the two? I'm assuming JVC isn't going to release any new projector models in 2021.

I have. I still recommend the NX7 as it is visibly superior than the 715. The only aspect where the 715 wins is if you require 1080i/p upscaling to 4K when watching sports. The 715 wins a little bit.
