L, despite absolutely loving it when I saw it on Netflix. Just wondered if either version was the better to get hold of.

Yep, the German release features HDR (HDR10+ for those with compatible setups), I don't own the US release, so I cannot fully comment on that one, but it is SDR only. I do own the German release, and it looks great

I just received the German 4K in the mail and man...the HDR really makes a difference for this film, especially compared to the US SDR 4K disc.

Is the HDR on the German release a good or bad difference? How would you compare the USA and DE 4k uhd discs? I'm thinking of importing the DE 4k, to check out the hdr pass for myself.

I scooped the German 4k uhd release with hdr last month, just because I had to know for myself, and decided to compare the USA and DE 4k releases briefly tonight. Instead, I got sucked in and wound up watching the whole flick first. The more I watch this, the more fun it is. Man, I just love how Begos incorporates such powerfully Carpenter-esque synth scoring in his flicks. Feels heavily familiar and is such a welcome wash, like putting on a comfy pair of favorite shoes. Great cast, too, with an amusingly-crass, down-to-earth script. After thoroughly enjoying this homage once again, I did go back and compare a large number of scenes from the German uhd. The hdr on the DE disc really punches up the copious ripping neon lighting that dominates the bar scenes. Primaries in some scenes look punchier as well, and dark detail and density are a bit better in the many frequently-very-dark interior scenes. VFW is an extreme film, with a deliberately rough look, and the hdr, while not overly drastic, nonetheless gives it an interesting edge with more polish and pomp. I have no idea if the hdr version is "director approved" but it's probably how I'll watch the flick going forward. YMMV.
