She was the most versatile star of the 30s and 40s and she reinvented herself several times throughout her career. The “camp” aspect of her persona that has been emphasized by pop culture doesn’t do her talent justice.

You're very much correct that Joan was a master in reinventing herself. There's a reason her career spanned from the silent era in the 20s all the way to 1970. When most of her silent era contemporaries were deemed has-beens, Joan kept herself relevant by moving to sound and she ultimately outlasted both Garbo and Norma Shearer, her main two rivals at MGM, as both their careers ended by the advent of WWII. Anytime she felt a studio was not giving her quality work, she would buy out her contract and seek greener pastures elsewhere such as when she left MGM for WB in the early 40s and then left WB for Columbia in the early 50s. Another reason that Mommie Dearest fabrication is complete drivel, claiming she was fired from MGM. Even Bette Davis admitted at the end that she had treated Joan badly and had real respect for her as a professional and as a human being, but that it was necessary to keep making quips about her in TV interviews and play up the feud because that's what the fans expected her to do so she catered to them.
