It's just a temporary thread title until the official movie title is announced. Better than "Untitled Lion King Project Directed by Barry Jenkins."

I Rage-Quit the remake every ten minutes. Hated it. Calmed down. Started it up, here comes the Rage-Quit yet again. Hated hated hated hated hated hated that movie.

It would take transatlantic cables chained to the Iron Works of Hephaestus to drag me into a Lion King sequel. Hell, no. And I'm not exactly a fan of the of the 1994 film to begin with.

I guess Disney needs to go back to their roots to make this work. Translation: rip off something else from Jungle Emperor Leo (Kimba) and call it a Disney original.

Oh, you mean Bambi? If only the studio was capable of making an animated film like Bambi again. Without pop songs and fart jokes...got nothing against The Lion King, but even the hand-drawn version feels like a 90's riff on Bambi trying to sell Happy Meals.

The Lion King and Bambi comparison never made sense to me tbh. I guess both of them are animal coming of age stories, but that's about it. The tone is completely different. One is about life, the other is about a monarchy feud and intrigues. The main antagonist in Bambi is a lovecraftian threat to humanity animals and life, while the antagonist in The Lion King is a pretender to the throne.

I mean, now that I’ve had a bit of time to think about it, it sort of makes sense. Jenkins is very good at telling a story through facial expression and emotions, so I imagine if anyone can capture emotion through photorealistic animation it could be him. Granted the writer behind it boasts less confidence in the project and I can only imagine Jenkins taking it to get some more personal work funded afterwards, though no doubt he hasn’t just taken this for the paycheck, I do honestly believe he thinks he can make something out of this.

But it’s just so weird that Disney wants to pursue this, like I know it made $1.6 billion worldwide, but do they really think this’ll be a franchise cash cow? As huge as the remake was it didn’t really seem to leave much lasting impact culturally, and I honestly don’t think it has that many ardent fans out there, nevermind anyone really clambering for more. Last time they tried to do a sequel to a remake it was Alice in Wonderland, similarly huge but similarly muted in response, by the time the second one come around no one wanted it, and it completely flopped, and that was something that had prior existing source material to work from. I honestly think Disney should take that profit for what it is and not try to franchise this.

I really disliked the first one, and I thought my reaction to a sequel would be utter disdain, but with Barry Jenkins involved they've reeled me in....

Loved the 2019 movie, thought it was much better than the 1994 movie. I've never seen anything this Barry Jenkins has made but the Director's for these remakes rarely bring much of their own sensibilities to the proceedings. Looking at Aladdin you'd never know Guy Ritchie directed it.

This is EXACTLY what Disney is counting on in hiring an acclaimed indie filmmaker, people rushing in blindly based on his "cred", when the resulting movie is going to be every bit as soulless an automaton as the 2019 film. Ava DuVernay made Selma, yet when The Mouse came calling with a big paycheck, she delivered A Wrinkle In Time unto the world.

Ah fair enough then. Still, if it is a prequel, I'd much prefer an animated one. Maybe it will be? I don't see anywhere saying it's live action yet.

It'll look just like the 2019 film.

The Deadline article says:

The film will continue with the photo-realistic technology that director Jon Favreau used in the 2019 film and 2016’s The Jungle Book.

If it is going to be the same then I might pass. I'll see how it looks in a trailer first.

Who knows, maybe they'll improve on the bland CG used in Disney's live action Lion King, here's hoping.

They might tweak and update some things, but it would be odd for them to majorly overhaul the character designs and visual look.

Especially since the first movie was so well received.

Any tweaks are better than none if done right. I'll see how it looks first. Who knows, I may end up liking what I see.

I agree. Regardless of the internet noise, the movie was a success and the audience loved it. I enjoyed it as well.

I don't expect any major changes. Maybe a tweak here and there, but no reason to do a complete overhaul.

I genuinely forgot that film had a sequel.

A prequel exploring more of Mufasa's upbringing and rise to power along with Scar being a integral feature to that sounds more potentially satisfying than the mediocre 2019 remake and mediocre Lion King 2: Simba's Pride.

i can not imagine disney giving him free rein. yeah, it’s a paycheck. and i don’t blame him. production is halted on. a lot of things right now.

love moonlight and really like if beale street could talk, but i don’t know how you go from those smaller budget dramas to something huge and still retain your style.
