The current blu-ray is perfectly ok, and a huge upgrade over the dvd on a larger screen:

Do yourself a favor and buy this masterpiece!
The BD looks good although it's room for a lot of improvements.

I hate excessive use of DNR as much as the next guy, but I don't think this is what "a DNR bombshell" looks like.

No one even mentioned DNR in this thread until Burt did above, so I highly doubt it's that much of an issue. The transfer looks fine as far as grain is concerned, it just needs better encoding. Just doing an MPEG-4 MVC encoing, with less compression would be a noticeable improvement.

The title screams Criterion or Arrow treatment just due to being a Deakins-lensed production alone....especially with already having a 4K DI

This movie deserves better than "perfectly ok."

No one's arguing that it doesn't- just that it's hardly a "DNR bombshell" like the person above claimed, nor is DNR even really one of the problems.

Right, but the audio is where the problem is. Also, a new 4K scan with AVC would still be a noticeable improvement.

Not sure how a BD of a contemporary movie with lossy audio is "perfectly ok", to say nothing of the edge enhancement that's mentioned in the Blu-ray.com review, HTF, and DVD Beaver.

Some people are contented with mediocrity, it seems.

Perhaps after the deluge.
Posted the above over a year ago, but a film that is truly one of the best American films of the past 25 years is worth the effort.

I don't recall the setting, in person or on the web, but I recall hearing/reading there was a conflict between WB and Dominik, the former extremely unhappy with the marketability of the film, never mind the cut, after several concerns were communicated during filming and post-production.

It wouldn't surprise me if they/someone was still holding a grudge.

Other than Killing Me Softly, I not aware of any other film he's directed for Hollywood, although he did direct a few episodes of Mindhunter S2.

Once again, my post was in reaction to the 'DNR bomshell' remark, which as others have pointed out is way of the mark. My post was a reminder that people who have avoided this GREAT movie so far should get this blu-ray, it's easily and cheaply available.

And yes: I'm very happy with the current blu-ray, not because it's the best transfer possible or the optimum in 4k glitterati (as some people seem to need now for every movie release to avoid getting their eyeballs infected or something), but because it's the best way to see the movie. It's a faithful transfer of the intentions of the director and cinematographer, and for me that's always the bottom line with any blu-ray release.

I enjoy hyperbole as well from time to time.

Love this movie and would definitely welcome a Criterion. It sort of has a spiritual precursor in Ang Lee's "Ride with the Devil" I feel.

Roger Deakins Urges Criterion to Release Over Three-Hour ‘Jesse James’ Extended Cut

At least give us a new re-release. This movie deserves better.

I was just thinking of how amazing it would be for this to happen. I love the theatrical cut, but have always wanted to watch the cut that premiered at Cannes.

Actually, it didn't premiere at Cannes, but Venice, three weeks before its wide US release. The audience at Venice saw the same 160 minute cut of the film, per this review from Hollywood Reporter:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/re...-coward-158849

Any longer cuts would only have been seen by people working on the film and audiences at test screenings.

It is literally perplexing that Criterion isn't interested in this title. It's actually mind numbing that this is EXACTLY the kind of film that Criterion seemingly exists for. It's a stunning masterfully crafted and acted lightning-in-a-bottle, timeless piece of cinema. plus it's full of academy award winning names (now). and YES the idea that CC puts out other obscure and honestly forgetful titles over this gem is saddening.

Especially since WB criminally let it down majorly and has seemingly abandoned it. Even the brilliant director seems to be moving on without much interest lol. According to Brad, he owns a copy extended cut and has spoken glowingly of and prefers it. Hell i'd even settle for a one time only screening in a different state if need be!

I'd pay stupid money for even a limited edition release of this picture with:

Both cuts in remastered 4K
Director Commentary
Actor's Commentary
Ron Hanson Commentary
Anniversary Retrospective
Ellis & Cave scoring sessions/materials
behind the scenes/B-roll footage
all publicity materials
and a ode to Roger Deakins
w/ a special apology from Warner Bros. studios

I dare to dream...

One of the greatest films I've ever seen. Affleck is legendary. Criminally underrated.
