King Kong grossing $90m on a $25m is a decent hit, but not spectacular, like Jaws grossing $400m+ on a $9m budget. I wouldn’t quite say it dominated, let alone alongside Jaws.

Also, while it’s still a desired title to this day, it doesn’t have that great of a reputation like the previously mentioned films. Maybe because there are two other versions that are more popular and acclaimed (not sure about the Jackson one being more acclaimed, but certainly the 1933 one is).
Not a match for Jaws but the other super talked about movie of the time.
Not as much box office as Ghost but adjusted for inflation and so on it did around $210 equivalent which is pretty solid even only about 1/2 that of Ghost. In terms of general talk and so on and appearances on TV and so on, KK didn't feel smaller to me than Ghost, maybe sort of similar overall.

Anyway it certainly seemed big enough and got enough talk and attention to be fitting for the Presents line.

The poster meant the original poster artwork of the 1976 version. The movie itself is a remake.

Hope this leads to a release of King Kong Lives! sometime soon. Getting those 2 will complete my Kong collection
I remember hating King Kong Lives, but the damn thing is starting to grow on me as a last gasp of totally bonkers giant monster mayhem. And it's got a nice score too!

Oh, and it got its own video game!

The one thing I will say about the amazing '33 version is that it does always feel a trace jarring in how they look at and regard the native islanders and Kong compared to the '76 and '05 versions. The '76 version was the first to not treat everything and everyone on the island as dumb beasts to be dominated with full right.

I'm not buying it. Though I'd love that poster on my wall.

Such great news! Extended CUT! Love this movie. It's actually one of my all-time faves from my youth.

Not to be picky, but then also inflate the budget and then compare it to Ghost. Really, a much smaller hit.

However, I don't argue that it didn't deserve a Presents release. Films like The Haunting are less deserving and it also wasn't a hit upon its release. Same goes for Elizabethtown. So it seems they seem to release films that were just long Blu-ray holdouts too, and in that case, like The Golden Child and Pretty in Pink, this could have been part of the line.

I don't think the 1933 version depicts the natives that badly - Noble Johnson is great as the chief. It is a bit weird wondering how an African tribe ending up being the remnants of a lost civilization in the South Seas, but there you go.

If you want to see some really disrespectul treatment of the natives, check out King Kong Vs Godzilla, where they are played by Japanese actors in blackface speaking pidgin English!

It's interesting that both remakes avoid having Kong kill any natives. There are some especially nasty scenes in the original of Kong grinding people into the mud underfoot that gave me nightmares as a child.

although I'd say budget ratio doesn't count other than for those who made and worked on it though

If a movie makes 2billion today and takes over pop culture and everyone talks about it and it's everywhere for a few years then even if it say cost 1.89 billion to make and luckily just managed to be a make it flick for the studio, it's still a mega hit for the viewing public and pop culture. Also the same for some of those semi-indie movies that have like $1 mil budget and end up making say $80 million today, huge hit for the studio, 80x ratio, bigger than Avatar, SW, Titanic, etc. and yet pop culture and for the audience-wise not even close to as big as those other titles mentioned.

Yeah those two were much smaller than Ghost, Airplane, King Kong, etc.

I guess. Sort of. '76 does go a bit deeper in that
[Show spoiler] it also gets into thinking about the sociological effects of taking Kong away, big oil not caring about trashing an unspoiled island, etc.

Kong certainly gets treated more like just a dumb beast without much deep sympathy though. That said, still love the '33 one all the same.

I saw this on HBO Max not too long ago and Richard Kline's photography on the film was really stunning. I'm sure it will look great on the Blu-ray release. I really like the artwork too, tempted to order it just for the poster alone.

It’s about time !! I’m over the moon reading this today. First time I ever pre-ordered from Shout and got one of the posters. Saw this when it came out on Christmas Eve in Boston. My big brother took me. I loved it !!!

I hope they get the sound right. The Studio Canal release had a noticeably flawed 5.1 remix.

I could see them giving this a SteelBook later too like they did with MBV.

I'm strongly considering framing this poster since it's going to be rolled. I don't remember the last time I ordered from Shout to get the poster but I think Child's Play is the only rolled one I have.

Can't believe this took so long. What's more, rather surprising Paramount wouldn't want to put this on disc themselves.

Ironically, this took so long to get onto standard Blu-ray this is really something suitable to 4K Blu-ray too.....

Damn I don’t think I’ve ever even seen this! And I love King Kong movies. This’ll be a must buy. I sure hope King Kong Lives comes out on Blu-ray before long too. Maybe with the whole Godzilla vs Kong movie coming out it’ll happen!

Pre-ordered from Shout along with the Creepshow CE ($23.96) to get free shipping. I've been meaning to pick up Creepshow for a while so at that price it was a no-brainer.
